Remember the name ‘Arctic Trucks’? They are the same folks whose claim-to-fame was when Jeremy Clarkson and James May drove a customized Toyota Hilux at the North Pole. This company is back in news and this time for working on the Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck. Arctic Trucks calls is the ‘Icelandic-spec’ version of the VW Amarok.

What Makes the Volkswagen Amarok by Arctic Trucks Special?

Although remembered for working on the Toyota Hilux for Top Gear, Arctic Trucks has also worked on many pick-up trucks in the U.K. and also helped Isuzu launch the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35. The company has applied its know-how to Nissan Navara as well. This time, it has designed a new one-off Volkswagen Amarok for arctic exploring that even has a cappuccino machine on board! Called the Amarok AT35, the truck retains the same 3.0-liter, V-6 diesel engine that develops 221 ponies. The suspension has been lifted by 25 millimeters in the front as well as the rear, and the truck has new flared wheel arches to accommodate the bigger 315/70R17 all-terrain tires. There are, of course, extra large Arctic Trucks mud flaps.

It also features Hill Descent Assist and has the widest load platform in its class. On the inside, the truck offers a fire extinguisher, a portable generator, VHF radio, toolbox, jack, and if things get a little too extreme, a first aid kit with a defibrillator.

Nick Axtell, specialist sales manager for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said, "The Volkswagen Amarok has been a massive hit since its introduction, and we’re delighted to see it proving its worth in some of the toughest conditions in the world. For British drivers, the standard Amarok will be able to cope with everything winter has to throw at it."

He further added, “Back in the UK, the ability of our van centers to convert vehicles through recognized partners remains one of our unique selling points. It doesn’t matter whether that’s fitting racking for a plumber, refrigerators for a supermarket chain or something altogether more extreme like the AT35 – we are always committed to working with you.”

Final Thoughts

We are not sure if the truck will make it to the U.S., but it would be quite cool if it did. Who would mind an arctic-conditions-spec’d truck on the U.S. market? Well, we wouldn’t! What are your thoughts on the Arctic Trucks Amarok AT35? Share them with us in the comments section below.
