What Makes the 2020 Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition Special?

Volkswagen even brought the updated Passat sedan to Detroit with a few changes. However, with the dwindling sales of sedans, it seems to be in a precarious situation right now. The Passat has been around for almost half a century and the automaker cannot retire the moniker because the sales are going down. Hence, Volkswagen launched the facelifted version of the Passat Estate in February, and now, it has decided to up the ante by launching the R-Line Edition and stuffing it with plenty of add-ons that are generally optional in the other variants.

The estate will be limited to just 2,000 copies; so that certainly makes it special. The Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition can be had only in the model's top-spec engines - a 2.0-liter TSI mill that churns out 268 ponies and the 2.0-liter Bi-TDI twin-turbo mill that packs 240 horses. Volkswagen's patented 4Motion all-wheel-drive system will be available as standard.

The German automaker will be offering the Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition in a new Moonstone Grey shade that is exclusive to the sporty wagon. As is synonymous with any car that is even vaguely close to being 'sport', this estate also loses out on the chrome bits in favor of black accents for a contrasting effect; the most prominent one being the glossy black roof. The other exterior parts that receive the 'black' treatment include the roof-edge spoiler, roof rail, and wing mirrors, and the window sills. In the rear, the LED taillights and the rear diffuser have been blackened out as well. The Passat Variant R-Line Edition will ride on 19-inch Pretoria alloys which are also - you guessed it - black in color.

This special edition is offered with R-Line sports seats at the front. The bolstering is wrapped in Carbon leather, whereas the seat center panels are made of Nappa leather. The pedals also receive the special R-Line treatment and are finished in brushed steel. What makes the interior all the more exciting is the new ambient lighting with a wide array of colors. Coupled with the dark theme of the estate, these colors certainly brighten up the cabin. The estate also receives a digital instrument cluster and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. It supports Apple CarPlay as well.

In terms of technology, the Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition is offered with a feature known as 'Travel Assist' that partially assists the driver even at the speeds of 130 mph. All you need to do is keep your hands on the steering wheel and the rest of it will be taken care of by the estate. The system uses the front camera, Front Assist pedestrian monitoring system, Park Assist system, Side Assist lane changing system, and the automatic distance control system to successfully help you with your driving duties. LED Matrix headlights will be standard with this special edition. The Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition also happens to be the first wagon in the company's stable wherein you can disable the ESC. This means you can take your wagon to the race tracks and extract the best performance and driving experience possible. Now, whether you will take a long-ass wagon to the race track is an entirely different question.

Conclusion

The Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line Edition will be unveiled on March 7 at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, where it will be sharing the space with the concept version of the T-Roc R performance crossover.
