The 2020 Volkswagen Touareg R is a high-performance version of the familiar midsize SUV. Unveiled in February 2020, ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, the 2020 Touareg R is the first of its kind to boast an "R" badge. It’s also the first R model with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and the first range-topping variant of any Volkswagen nameplate to feature electrification.
The 2020 Touareg R also makes the Touareg the third VW nameplate to offer a hybrid model after the Golf and the Passat. Because Volkswagen no longer offers the Touareg in the United States, where it has been replaced by the Atlas, the Touareg R won’t cross the pond to North America. Volkswagen continues to impress us with its I.D. R race car, the moving technology lab of the giant from Wolfsburg, one that’s been created to break records and, in the process, prove to the world that Volkswagen’s EVs will knock everybody out of the park. Last weekend, during the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed Romain Dumas driving a revised version of the I.D. R did just that, making every other car that has ever run on Lord March’s Hillclimb course seem pedestrian as he smashed the all-time record set 20 years ago in a full-blown Formula 1 car.
There are still many that will never bring themselves to even accept electric cars as the way forward, let alone try and like them. While this is true, it’s also true that cars like Volkswagen’s I.D. R are surely turning heads among even the most hardcore fans of the old-school internal combustion engine. This car has, in the space of little over 12 months, smashed the all-time record at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb and then did the same around the Nurburgring-Nordschleife with a time fast enough to make it the second fastest car around that track ever. That it also broke the EV record at Goodwood last year seems almost moot given what Dumas did this year with the car.
2019 Volkswagen ID Roomzz Concept
It’s not the lineup we can expect, but Volkswagen’s growing family of I.D. concepts welcomed its newest member to the fold at Auto Shanghai 2019. The new model, called the I.D. Roomzz Concept, is yet another concept crossover that previews a production model that’s scheduled to hit the Chinese market sometime in 2020. If VW’s grand EV plans come to fruition — the German automaker is putting up almost $35 billion in investments to its EV cause — the production version of the I.D. Rooms Concept would follow the all-electric hatchback and all-electric crossover that Volkswagen already has in the pipeline. Testing of the hatchback model, called the ID.3, is now in full swing after a series of videos previewing the model’s Launch Edition leaked online. The budding excitement surrounding the ID.3’s coming launch shouldn’t take away from the potential of the I.D. Roomzz Concept, especially with what this concept brings to the table.

The German automaker is talking about the I.D. Roomzz, a crossover SUV with an innovative cabin layout that will arrive on the Chinese market by 2021.
When Volkswagen first announced that it will quite literally bombard the EV segment with a cacophony of models of all shapes and sizes in the next decade, I genuinely thought the German giant was a bit over ambitious in the wake of the still-relevant Dieselgate scandal. The company based in Wolfsburg claimed that 70 models are in the pipeline and, in the past couple of years, we’ve been periodically greeted by new concepts that preview production models from the I.D. family. Now, as we’re edging closer to the launch of the first production-ready I.D. model, the I.D. Hatch, Volkswagen is preparing another concept for the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show, one that’s become impossible to ignore by the big players in the car-building world.
2019 Volkswagen I.D. BUGGY Concept
The Volkswagen I.D. Buggy is a concept car that draws inspiration from the iconic dune buggies of the 1960s. A fully electric vehicle built on Volkswagen’s new MEB modular platform, the I.D. Buggy is part of the company’s I.D. series of vehicles that includes six concept cars as of 2019. Unlike some of its siblings though, the I.D. Buggy won’t make it into production.
Having used the I.D. series to develop a modern successor to the iconic VW Bus, the German firm also created a modern interpretation of the classic dune buggy. The latter became known in the 1960s, when some privateers from California, most notably Bruce Meyers, converted rear-engined Volkswagen Beetles into roofless and doorless recreational vehicles for use on sand dunes and beaches. The I.D. Buggy pays tribute to its spiritual predecessor in both design and functionality, but it adds an electric drivetrain into the mix.

Less than a month after the company launched the facelifted version, Volkswagen is all set to launch the sporty variant of the Passat Estate at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The Passat Variant R-Line Edition comes with a lot of new goodies and will certainly induce the younger folks’ interest. The company has announced that the R-Line edition will be limited to just 2,000 units!
2019 Volkswagen T-Roc R Production Concept
In an unprecedented invasion of performance SUVs, the Volkswagen Group introduced yet another performance crossover - the Volkswagen T-Roc R. It is basically a buffed up version of the highly sought after subcompact crossover T-Roc. Digging a bit deeper one can find a whole lot of the Golf R under its subtle body. And, that is a good thing. As for now, the Volkswagen T-Roc R is a near-production concept car. Yet, as is the case with the Cupra Formentor Concept, I believe it will be greenlighted for production in a few months following the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show.
The T-Roc R joins a quite astounding lineup of performance crossovers that include the Cupra Ateca, the Cupra Formentor Concept, the Skoda Kodiaq RS, the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line with 240 horsepower engine, the Audi RSQ3, and the Audi SQ5 TDI.
Obviously, I included here almost all performance SUVs regardless of the power output. They do target similar customers. Do you really think someone in love with the Formentor does not dream bigger - like about the SQ5? Of course they do.
Obviously, Volkswagen is big on giving the drivers what they really want, and although it came to the SUV/Crossover party a bit late with the T-Roc, it definitely moved in the right direction with the hot one.
2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI35
The new 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is just right. Presented at the 2019 Chicago Motor Show, the new hot Volkswagen compact sedan gained the much-needed overhaul with a fine upgrade that came from none other than the parts bins of the Golf GTI and the Golf R. It is a thoroughly improved car, with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, gasoline engine, a fresh new look, and a far more advanced suspension compared to the lesser units. Let me just say it - rear multi-link. It has it.
With the new model introduced in Chicago, Volkswagen USA officials actually noted that the new car will come with two trim levels, while the limited edition GLI 35 serves as sort of a high-end model of the GLI world.

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is the latest performance-oriented version of the compact sedan. It’s based on the seventh-generation Jetta what was unveiled for the 2019 model year, and just like its predecessor, it rides on underpinnings borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf GTI. More aggressive than ever design-wise, the 2020 Jetta GLI is also the most powerful GLI ever built. Powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, it comes with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen has updated the current Euro market Passat and as with all new products from the German giant, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. The Jetta GLI returned to the market at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, and needless to say, it’s cooler than it has ever been. Although the previous model was nothing to sneeze at, the seventh-gen GLI is a proper four-door GTI. The only thing that bugs is that Volkswagen didn’t drop the "GLI" badge for a proper Jetta GTI name. And here’s why I think it should have.
