Volkswagen Golf Mk8 vs Mk7 - a design comparison
After seven successful years on the market, the Golf Mk7 was retired to make way for the eighth-generation hatchback. Unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, the Golf Mk8 brings a new design to the table. However, much like all recently introduced new-generation Volkswagens, the new Golf is an evolution of the outgoing model. Is the new design different enough to be considered a new generation? Holy Electric Moly, the 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 Hybrid Is More Powerful Than the GTI
The highly-anticipated 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 is finally out and the really big news is that it comes with five hybrid drivetrains. The regular TSI engines are now paired to 48-volt systems, but Volkswagen also offers two proper hybrids with electric motors. One of them is basically similar to the old Mk7-generation GTE, but the new Mk8 GTE is a wild one and packs more punch than the outgoing GTI. I bet you didn’t expect that.
2020 VW Jetta GLI vs 2019 Honda Civic Si Sedan
Volkswagen has finally given its Jetta sedan for North America the power, exclusivity, and extra sporting edge that some enthusiasts felt were missing from the package. The new 2020 Jetta GLI has addressed all those concerns and is now a model with enough brawn and sophistication to go head to head with all the sporty sedans in its size and price brackets. If you’re into fast driving, then you will be happy to note the new Jetta GLI gets the exact same engine as the (Golf) GTI, a standard limited-slip differential, and a snappy six-speed stick shift.
One of the new Jetta GLI’s main rivals is the2019 Honda Civic Si sedan, a very hard contender indeed. The Civic Si has a smaller displacement engine than the Jetta GLI, and has less power, but it is also quite a light car, one renowned for its excellent handling and road manners. It also looks somewhat sportier than the Jetta too, especially if you see its trunk lid-mounted wing, the center exhaust, and the aggressive overall design and stance.
If this were purely a visual comparison to discover which car looked more aggressive, that distinction would automatically go to the Civic Si. But it’s not all about the visuals, especially since the Jetta is more powerful than the Civic and it also has a more sophisticated independent rear suspension that VW doesn’t offer on any other Jetta model.
Visual Comparison: 2019 Kia Ceed vs 2018 Volkswagen Golf
Ahead of its world debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the third-generation Kia Ceed is already generating plenty of attention. The new model arrives with a fresh design born from Kia’s latest style language. It adopts plenty of the automaker’s distinctive features, most notably the “Tigernose” front grille that’s flanked by a pair of more aggressive swept-back headlamps. The new Ceed also has a sportier profile, emphasized in part by a more sculpted hood, aggressive body lines, and a more pronounced rear section than the model it’s succeeding. The Ceed’s new presentation sets it up nicely as a viable competitor to the Volkswagen Golf. The question then has to be asked: which looks better, the Kia Ceed or the Volkswagen Golf?
Mercedes-Benz X-Class Vs. The Competition
Mercedes-Benz just made quite the splash when it dropped the new X-Class. Framed as the first truly “upscale” pickup truck, the X-Class intends on redefining the midsize segment with unprecedented levels of luxury and refinement. It might seem like a strange combination to mate luxury with pickups, but as Mercedes points out, “the number of pickups for private use is increasing. They are no longer viewed purely as workhorses.” As such, the X-Class aims to broaden the pickup’s buyer appeal, seeking out folks like “land owners and farmers in Argentina, business owners and building contractors in Australia, families with an affinity for premium products in Brazil, trend-conscious individualists in South Africa and Great Britain as well as sporty adventurers in New Zealand and Germany.” Sounds like quite the collection of buyers. But here’s the thing – is the X-Class really all that revolutionary?

Ditch The SUV And Try One Of These Wagons Instead
In case you haven’t noticed, American consumers are still enamored with the idea of driving around in a tall-bodied, relatively off-road capable SUV with loads of space to haul around many people and lots of things. Sales of such vehicles continue to rise, and automakers are responding by churning out new models by the truckload. But is there a better means to achieve similar ends? What if, for example, you want something with the capability, cargo space, and attitude of an SUV, but the maneuverability, ease of use, and comfort of a regular passenger car? Volkswagen’s New Atlas Makes the Touareg Pointless
To be completely honest, I’ve been pretty critical of VW in recent years. First off, the brand fancies itself as more of a luxury brand with prices for some models to match. Take the VW Touareg, for example. It’s a nice vehicle, but it’s not $50,000 - $60,000 nice. Well, Volkswagen recently introduced the Atlas and announced pricing, and I have to say I’m not sure what VW is thinking. The Atlas is a nice vehicle, and with a starting price of $30,500, it’s priced right for what it is. Of course, it climbs to as much as $48,490 for the range-topping SEL Premium trim, but if you want the 280 horsepower V-6 – which is the same engine in the Touareg – you’ll pay between $31,900 and $33,700. But, it’s not just the Atlas’ price point that renders the Touareg obsolete.
See, the Atlas is bigger, offers seating for seven, and the interior is even similar to that of the Touareg but more upscale. So what gives? VW has been working on a much-needed third-gen model which is expected to hit the market for 2017, but again, I have to ask you why? The Atlas comes in at 198.3-inches long, 77.9-inches wide, and 69.6 inches wide, making it nearly 10-inches longer, 1.5-inches wider, and 2.32-inches taller than its more expensive brother. That should translate to this seven-seater having more interior space to go along with seating for two extra people… or dogs, for that matter.

Every fall, dozens of journalists from all over Texas and around the country gather to compare, test, and crown the winner of the “Truck of Texas” competition. It’s a coveted award from the Texas Auto Writers Association that signifies Texas’ collective approval of a truck. And not only are trucks involved, awards go out for the SUV and CUV of Texas.
I already touched on the topic in the preview piece, but awards are also given to the winner in each vehicle category and for various things like “best connectivity” and “best powertrain.”
This year’s competition was fierce. There were 84 vehicles present from 21 automakers entered into 17 different categories. Evaluating the field were 69 TAWA members comprised of journalists and social media influencers.

In the not-so-distant past, we Americans weren’t exactly spoiled for choice when it came to picking a hot hatchback. Sure, we’ve always enjoyed plenty of tire-roasting drag racers, but these machines could never quite satisfy when it came to cornering prowess and practicality. Call it the grass-is-greener syndrome if you like, but the fact remains that many drivers in the U.S. felt slighted when gazing across the Atlantic, dreaming of high-strung, boosted engines stuffed in front of rounded rooflines over an odd number of doors.
Thankfully, that time is behind us, because the hot hatchback is coming to these star-spangled lands in droves. No longer need fans of the do-it-all, agile super-commuter feel jealous of folks overseas. Finally, automakers have realized the potential sales of affordable, power-to-weight superstars.
Two of these vehicles, the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R, represent two of the best hot hatches that money can buy. Both are turbocharged. Both have AWD. Both promise a combination of worry-free highway cruising, copious space to carry things, and enough race-inspired engineering to embarrass the average sports car.
But which is better?

It is not even a tiny bit of a secret that I love my Volkswagen Golf. I love its combination of good looks, practicality, and sporty driving characteristics, but how does it compare against something from BMW? In this episode of Chris Harris on Cars for /DRIVE, Chris takes a look at the latest and greatest seventh-generation Golf R, and he compares it to the new darling from BMW, the M235i.
In usual Chris Harris fashion, there is a bit of wit, a bit of history, and just a dash of sideways. Strangely though, he doesn’t really come to a solid conclusion about which one is best. He just gives us what he sees as the pros and the cons, and leaves it at that.
