2018 Volkswagen Golf RLMS by APR
As far as modded cars at SEMA go, the Volkswagen Golf RLMS tuned up by APR seems to be one of the most amazing to appear in Las Vegas. The American tuner of everything Audi and Volkswagen took a year and a half to work on the Golf RLMS which evolved from the hot hatch into something you wouldn’t be afraid to put up against the Nissan GT-R R35. I am not joking. Based on the Golf R, this track-worthy Golf RLMS by APR takes a unique approach to hatchback tuning. An approach I am inclined to call - “let’s make the best freaking hot-hatch.”
They’ve done it - and with so well calculated modifications that turned the Golf R into something a true Volkswagen enthusiast may call the Golf R536. Obviously, this is like my throwback to the Golf R400 super-hatch that had been crafted in the concept guise, but did not reach the production. Dieselgate was to be blamed.
Nevertheless, the R400 may be the first thing to pop into my mind upon seeing this, but this modded Golf RLMS by APR is much more than that.
2018 Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak
In case you hadn’t heard, Volkswagen is pivoting to a greener, more eco-friendly approach to building its cars, offering up plans to produce a host of new all-electric models over the next several years. Spearheading this new direction is a range of vehicles dubbed the I.D. family, which includes concepts like the Buzz minivan and Crozz four-door crossover. However, doesn’t think the I.D. range will be the death of go-fast VW’s - quite the opposite, in fact, as VW is also prepping a little something labeled I.D. for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado this June. It’s called the I.D. R, and it’s the company’s first-ever all-electric race car, purpose-built to tackle the Race to the Clouds. If ever there was a worthwhile application of VW’s EV tech, this is it. Mind the wing.

2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR
Established in 2015, the TCR series has become increasingly popular with each season, now being contested by several automakers from Europe and Asia. Volkswagen is one of them, having joined the series with a race-spec version of the Golf GTI in 2016. Following the first full season, in which the Golf GTI TCR won 17 races and two championships, the German firm made improvements to the car in order to continue its good run.
The hatchback’s aerodynamics were updated, while the technology under the hood has also been fine-tuned. The updated car was again used by Liqui Moly Team Engstler, which tackled the German ADAC TCR, TCR Asia, and the TCR Middle East series. The revised GTI also returned to the International TCR series with Team Leopard Racing, which won the championship the previous year. Let’s find out what’s new in the review below.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Bonneville Salt Flats Record Car
Hot on the wheels of the Volkswagen I.D. R’s record-breaking run at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, Volkswagen is setting its sights on a new record, this time at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah. As part of its goal of breaking the Southern California Timing Association’s BGC/G class record, the German automaker is preparing a heavily modified version of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Among the upgrades that will be included is a heavily modified version of VW’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged, EA888 four-cylinder engine.
2017 Volkswagen Polo R WRC
Introduced for the 2013 racing season as Volkswagen’s first WRC-spec factory car since the 1990 Golf Rally G60, the Polo R WRC went on to dominate the sport by winning three back-to-back World Rally Championships through 2015. Having dominated each and every season since it returned to WRC, Volkswagen is gunning for more success starting 2017 with a new Polo-based racer.
Under development since summer 2015, when the FIA released the new regulations for the World Rally Car class, the 2017 Polo R WRC is previewed as a significant improvement over its predecessor. Just like any evolution out there, the new rally-spec compact is set to be lighter, more powerful and more aerodynamic. In other words, Ford and Hyundai have plenty of things to worry about for 2017 if they don’t shape up over the next 12 months.
Details about the next-gen Polo R WRC are still very limited, and the actual car was only shown as a rendering, but Volkswagen provided just enough information for us to have a closer look at Wolfsburg’s upcoming rally weapon. An unveiling is planned toward the end of 2016 with the official debut to take place at the Rally Monte Carlo in January 2017. Stay tuned for updates!

2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR
Back in June of 2015, Volkswagen dropped news of the Volkswagen Golf TCR that was basically a 2013 Seat Leon Cup Racer with a Golf body. That car was a concept that was designed to see how the gold could stand up in racing events. Its final testing was completed by Liqui Moly Team Engstler, which led to a win at the Red Bull Ring in Austria in 2015. With that initial testing Volkswagen was able to add the finishing touches to its customer-focused race car, and now we’re graced with this – the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.
You’ll notice a striking resemblance to the Golf GTR concept that proved itself at the Red Bull Ring, but the finalized product is a little more refined and sports its own subtle little differences. It still boasts a rather powerful four-cylinder engine and still has the blood of the Seat Leon Cup Racer flowing through veins, but this car will surely find itself right at home at the track, just as the Golf TCR did last year, and the Seat Leon Cup Racer has for the past few.
This car is an exciting development, and if you’ve had a chance to drive the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport or the lesser 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI, you already know why. The road going variants of the Golf are responsive and handle quite well, which is why the Golf – at least in some form – deserves a place on the track. There’s just something about a hatchback racer that works, and this Golf GTI TCR is no exception. Keep reading to find out more about Volkswagen’s new race car.
On its best days, badge engineering is usually a cynical exercise in marketing and recycling of used chassis. On its worst day, it makes for brand-killers like the Cadillac Cimmaron and Catera. But every once in a great while, when the stars align just right and Venus is in the proper stage of ascension, re-badging a used chassis might just get you something beautiful and glorious. A car that feels like what it was always meant to be — a car like the VW Golf TCR.
While we here in the States eagerly await the new 2016 Volkswagen Golf R, Volkswagen has unveiled one pretty sweet re-badging job. The car you’re looking at is, in no uncertain terms, a 2013 Seat Leon Cup Racer with a new Golf body. No more, and certainly no less. Of course, it’s also still a Golf, because the Seat itself is a re-badged Golf. So maybe this is just a case of a car returning to its brand. Still, this is one sick little race-ready ride for those who just can’t wait to represent Wolfsburg on the race track.

Introduced for the 2013 racing season, the Polo R WRC is Volkswagen’s first WRC-spec factory car since the 1990 Golf Rallye G60. Based on the road-going Polo, the first-gen R WRC was built to second-generation World Rally Car regulations and powered by a turbocharged, 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine. The Polo went on to win its maiden WRC season in 2013, putting an end to Citroen’s fantastic five-year run. In 2014, Volkswagen Motorsport shattered its competitors for the second time running, defending both its drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles. For 2015, the Germans are set to tackle the World Rally Championship with a revised iteration of the Polo R WRC, one that has "undergone intense further development, both on the inside and the outside," according to Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development.
In all, nearly three quarters of last year’s components were optimized, while the already traditional white livery has been replaced with a more complex blue-and-white paint scheme.
While the supermini received significant updates, the teams operating it remained unchanged for the 2015 season. The No. 1 car will be driven by two-time WRC champions Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia, while the No. 2 Polo retains its Finnish crew consisting of Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila. The season debuts on January 22nd with the Monte Carlo Rally and comes to an end on November 15th with the Wales Rally. This year’s WRC includes 13 events in 13 countries and four continents.

After finishing second in the manufacturers championship, the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross crew is gearing up for 2015 with two updated Beetles that boast more-powerful 2.0-liter engines, a 0-to-60 time of two seconds flat, and the potential to take the fight to the current reigning champs from Ford. Based on the third-generation Beetle, these cars debuted in the final races of 2014, and are slated to run a full season this year.
Behind the wheel will be Scott Speed, who saw victory three times last year, earning him an overall third place finish in the championship. Beyond rallycross, Speed has experience in Formula 1 (2006 and 2007) and NASCAR (2008 and 2013). Joining him will be Tanner Foust, who managed to clinch the championship title in 2011 and 2012, with a runner-up finish in 2013.
“We are very much looking forward to the start of the GRC season with the Beetle,” said Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, in a press release. “The 2015 Beetle GRC has been further developed, based on all our experience we gained with the brand new Beetle last year. We are looking forward to a serious title challenge with Scott Speed and Tanner Foust in 2015 and we are sure that the Beetles will be real fan favorites again.”
The updates are all positive, and both drivers have huge experience, bringing the talent to wring every last bit of performance from these highly capable machines. But will it be enough to topple Ford?

After a five-year break from drifting, Tanner Foust will return to the sport that jumpstarted his career, making his Formula D homecoming behind the wheel of this 2015 Passat. With a competition debut this weekend at the Long Beach Grand Prix, the four-door grocery-getter is extensively modified and purpose-built for sideways combat, including a conversion to RWD and a 900-horsepower V-8 transplant.
The two-time drift champion says he’s excited to be back in the smoke, especially with a car as insane as this particular VW: "One of the things I have always loved about drifting in the United States is how inventive you can get with the car builds. You can put a high-horsepower V-8 into a Volkswagen Passat to make something completely unique," Foust says in a press release. "You don’t see that in another series in the word."
The Passat, which Foust says was a similar build to his previous Scion drifter, is the latest from Tanner Foust Racing, also responsible for the RAUH-Welt Begriff Volkswagen Beetle that debuted at SEMA last year.
"At the heart of it, I’m an enthusiast," Foust said. "Having the chance to dream up something incredible and then work with a team to modify and build and make it real is incredibly rewarding."

The Volkswagen New Beetle made its debut in 1998, following a long drought in America. Being based on the Golf, the New Beetle shared nearly nothing but its basic shape to the Beetle from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. In 2012, the Beetle obviously hit manhood, as VW dropped the "New" prefix and renamed it just "Beetle." This new, more masculine Beetle has slightly harder lined and a lower-slung roofline. Despite getting a little scruff on its face, few expected the newest Beetle to makes its way to race tracks, but that is exactly what is happening in 2014 with the Beetle GRC.
The well-known Tanner Foust and his colleague driver Scott Speed of the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross started the 2014 season off in two modified Polo rally cars, but that all changes mid-season when they switch to the new GRC Volkswagen Beetle. The menacing little bug pushes some 500-plus horsepower to all four wheels via its turbocharged, direct-injected TSI engine.

Now that the 2011 installment of the legendary 24 Hours of Nurburgring is upon us, participating automakers are slowly coming out of the woodwork with the presentation of their endurance race cars.
For their part, Volkswagen has developed a high-powered race-spec version of one of its most popular models. Called the Golf24, Volkswagen’s entry to the 24 Hours of Nurburgring will be a four-wheel drive and will carry a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 440 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque mated to a sequential six-speed transmission with paddle shifters.
"With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race," said to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.
"The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge."
There’s no doubt the Volkswagen Golf24 will have its hands full at the day-long endurance race this weekend, but if there’s a brand that can steal the show at Nurburgring, we wouldn’t bet against one of the biggest auto brands in the world. The fact that they have a car that poises a threat to its competitors makes them all that more dangerous come race time.

Last week we brought you news of the 2010 Race of Champions to be held at the Dusseldorf Football Arena this weekend. If you were still looking for a reason to get a ticket and check it out, here’s one more thanks to VW. The German manufacturer has confirmed their Scirocco R-Cup racer will be put through its paces by the world’s best drivers in head-to-head battle. It doesn’t get much better than that.
The entrance of the Scirocco R Cup car into the ROC is especially newsworthy simply because this will mark the first time a bio natural gas powered vehicle will make a run in the race. Bio natural gas is a 100% natural product created in Germany from biogenous waste materials and its use will reduce the vehicle’s CO2 emissions by 80%. The bio-CNG is a great way to power the Scirocco R Cup, but it would be nothing without pairing itself with the 2.0-liter four cylinder TSI engine to produce 275hp.
The 2010 Race of Champions will feature some of the most successful racers from around the world, but also some of the world’s most famous names: Sébastian Loeb (seven-time World Rally Championship winner and three-time Race of Champions ‘Champion of Champions’), Andy Priaulx (three time WTCC champion), Jason Plato (double British Touring Car Championship winner), Alain Prost (four-time Formula 1 world champion) and the German pairing of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher and the recently-crowned 2010 Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel.

With a crummy teaser photo displayed for us last month, now is the time to finally get to see the new Race Touareg 3! Following successes in the Dakar Rally in both 2009 and 2010, the Touareg 3 promises to be faster and more efficient than its successor. Its official debut will be made at the 2011 Dakar Rally.
The new Volkswagen Touareg 3 comes with a new carbon fiber and Kevlar bodywork that allows the Touareg to achieve maximum performance in any and all terrain the Rally may throw at it. The exterior of the rally car will also get a fresh look consisting of new LED lights, a new grille, window line, rear clamshell, and wheels.
Under the hood there is a revised twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter TDI engine mated to an upgraded five-speed sequential gearbox and a ZF-Sachs three-plate ceramic clutch. This combination produces 300 HP and 442 lbs ft of torque. The result is a sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 117 mph.

Volkswagen will enter this year’s Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race with an improved version of the Scirocco GT24 CNG. There will be three Scirocco GT24 CNG entering the race during the weekend of May 12-16, 2010 and their improved state may help them do better than last year’s results of 40th and 49th place in the overall classification. We imagine they are more than hopeful in this year’s performance especially since they have boosted the cars involved from two to three.
All three cars are powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine powered by natural gas and delivering a total of 330 HP (an increase from 325 HP). The CO2 emissions has been reduced by 80%.
Compared to the 2009 model, the improved Scirocco features a larger braking system, two additional light units and a new active electro-hydraulic differential (just for one of the three cars).
Even the Germans know the best was to go 100+ mph over rough desert terrain is with a big honkin’ truck. Volkswagen unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show the Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck that will run the 41st Baja 1000 desert race in the SCORE Trophy Truck class. The racer is powered by a 5.5 liter V-12 clean diesel engine that produces 550 hp and 625 lbs.-ft. of torque.
The Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck features a wheelbase of 125 inches, overall length of 213 inches, width of 92 inches, an overall height of 78 inches and weighs 5650 pounds. This is a specialty race car, with an entirely unique suspension set-up. VW did not just pluck a Touareg off the assembly line and put it to use at Baja. The dimensions for the Trophy Truck are 16 inches wider, 10 inches taller, and 26 inches longer (13 inches more in the wheelbase) than the standard Touareg 2 SUV.

Volkswagen’s latest track challenger, a supercharged and turbocharged Jetta saloon, was unveiled today (Thursday) in Britain. The Jetta TSI Sport made its debut at the Autosport International racing car show at Birmingham’s NEC, taking centre stage on the British Racing and Sports Car Club stand. The new machine will take to the track for the first time on Easter Monday (24 March) in the opening round of the Hankook-backed Volkswagen Racing Cup, at Oulton Park.
What can you do with a GE Model T58-8F helicopter turboshaft engine, converted to jet? With Ron Patrick’s custom VW Beetle you can have lots and lots of dangerous fun exploiting all 1350 horsepower. This monster is powered by two engines (original up front, jet in back) and is perfectly street legal since you’re only using the gasoline powered engine in normal driving conditions. But if you’re feeling adventurous, fire up the jet engine - which spins up to 26,000 rpm/13,000 rpm idle - and watch the afterburner come to life.
