The race, which has been going since 1916, sees competitors climb up the 12.42-mile-long course all the way to 14,000 feet. Nowadays, there’s no more dirt at Pikes Peak, but that doesn’t make the challenge itself any less daunting.

VW Gears Up For Pikes Peak With I.D. R All-Electric Racer: Video

Lots of electrons, lots of wing

The 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is rapidly approaching, and Volkswagen will be there to challenge the standing course record with this - the I.D. R, an all-electric racer purpose-built for the job. The event is set to take place at the end of the month, but VW is already onsite in Colorado, prepping for the big day with a few test runs in an effort to sort out any lingering issues with the new racing machine. Chronicling the latest efforts is this 2-minute, 46-second teaser vid, which shows the I.D. R in action alongside an interview with its driver, Romain Dumas.

All told, the I.D. R certainly has the right specs for something like this. In addition to simply ludicrous aero, this carbon monster is powered by a dual-motor powertrain making 671 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel it to 60 mph in just 2.25 seconds.

That’s quick, but Mr. Dumas has the skills to make it work, boasting a resume that includes wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Nurburgring, and 12 Hours of Sebring, not to mention outright victories at Pikes Peak in 2014, 2016, and 2017.

That said, even the best driver and car in the world won’t make this a cake walk. The Pikes Peak course is highly technical and extremely dangerous, composed of 156 turns spread over 12.42 miles, rising nearly 5,000 feet. The finish line towers above the surrounding landscape at 14,110 feet above sea level, which has a profound effect on cooling and aerodynamics, not to mention the driver’s mental state.

There’s something naturally soothing when you watch this video

Time-lapse videos of LEGOs being built is nothing new. Remember the miniature Ferrari F40 that was built in 60 seconds thanks to the magic of computer editing? Well, we’re bringing you another one of these videos because, quite frankly, they’re enjoyable to watch. The subject of this LEGO build is a Volkswagen Beetle, which, judging by the presence of the surfboard and the water cooler, comes to us by way of LEGO’s Creator line.

The video starts as expected. The build starts from the ground-up with the frame and wheels being put together first. From there, the interior is added piece by piece, including the transmission tunnel, the dashboard and windshield, and the four seats. The doors, roof, and hood follow suit. We even catch a glimpse of the car’s LEGO-version engine and exhaust at the back, as well as the spare tire that’s tucked under the cargo space of the front trunk. The build concludes with the aforementioned surfboard and picnic basket, both of which are stowed in the roof rack.

We’ve seen plenty of time-lapse LEGO builds before, and every one of them were must-watch videos because of how mesmerizing they look when the builds are sped up. It’s no different this time with the Volkswagen Beetle. Kind of makes me want to go out, buy one, and build it myself.

How The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta Proves Simple Is Better

Sometime added complexity kills luxury

This week I’m driving the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta SE – one trim up from the base model. It’s a no-frills sedan that doesn’t skimp on most modern “necessities” like power windows, keyless entry, and push-button start. There’s even a 6.3-inch touch screen with satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. But one thing it’s missing is fancy controls for its HVAC system. Rather, this single-zone system has the three old-school knobs, three buttons, and nothing more. But you know what? It just works.

To understand my amazement of these simplistic controls, you’ve got to look at the Cadillac CTS-V I was driving last week. While I love that 640-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged LT4 V-8, Cadillac’s CUE system spoiled my warm fuzzy feelings. Ask anyone and they’ll same the same – the CUE system is hard to use and requires taking eyes off the road and concentration in order to operate. Even the adjusting the HVAC’s temperature or fan speed settings is hard. The touch-sensitive, piano black surface of CUE sometimes didn’t respond to inputs and fingerprints were always visible.

Three minutes behind the Jetta’s leather-wrapped steering wheel, and I can operate the HVAC system without even looking. The knobs satisfyingly click as they rotate, making super simple to gauge how far you’ve turned them. What’s more, the direction and defrost knob allows for fine tuning between settings. For example, I can turn the knob one or two clicks towards the “feet” setting and still have the majority of air blowing at my face while my toes receive a slight breeze. It’s amazing.

So, here’s the thing. Automakers have a tendency to overcomplicate the little things. While this sometimes works in adding convenience, other times it only adds complexity and user frustration. I’d consider the Jetta’s HVAC controls more “luxurious” than the Cadillac’s CUE controls. Why? Simplicity wins out. Thankfully, Volkswagen’s upgraded HVAC controls with an automatic mode and dual-zone temperatures is just as simple to use, though it does lose out of the awesome adjustability between vent locations.

First launched in 1949, the Microbus is now one of Volkswagen’s most legendary creations, alongside the equally iconic Beetle. So it’s far from surprising that the German firm is planning to offer a new retro-looking van under the same name by 2022. Just like it’s not surprising that many people got really excited at the thought of being able to buy a modern Microbus in the near future. The only downside is that we’re almost five years away from seeing it in the metal. So just in case, you can’t handle the long wait, here’s a cool fridge you can buy.

"Did you say fridge?!" Yup, that’s what I said. You’re probably wondering what a fridge got to do with the Volkswagen Microbus. Well, Gorenje’s latest Retro Special Edition is inspired by the Volkswagen Microbus. More specifically, its design resembles that of the 1960s Microbus’ front fascia. Both the two-tone finish separated by the big V-shaped chrome trim and the "VW" emblem are there, while the handle that looks as if borrowed from the van adds to the effect. Oh, and the one used in all the commercial is painted is a gorgeous aqua blue that’s as vintage as they get. Obviously, you can also have it in red.

German hot hatch destroys its own lap record

Life can be a little boring when you already own the front-wheel drive lap record at the Nürburgring. So when you’re at the top, the only way you can go a little higher is when you take a stab at your own record. Lo and behold, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S did just that when it went back to the ‘Ring to upend its own record.

Taking full advantage of ideal weather conditions (46°F) back in late October, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S put in a scintillating lap time of 7:47.19, eclipsing its previous record of 7:49.21 by more than two seconds. Not only did it smash its own record, but it also extended its lead over the Honda Civic Type R, which held the record with a lap time of 7:50.63 before the Golf ran roughshod over it during its initial run at the Green Hell. Do some calculations and the Golf GTI Clubsport S’ new lap record is 3.44 seconds faster than the Civic Type R.

The new lap time is made more impressive when you line it up against the overall lap times around the 13-mile race track. With this lap time, the Golf GTI Clubsport S positions itself between the Lamborghini Murcielago LP-640 and the BMW M3 GTS, two performance cars that know their own business around the Nürburgring.

At the very least, the VW hot hatch just made it a lot more difficult for other front-wheel drive cars to break its new lap record. Not that it would’ve been easy to do with the old record, but now, the German automaker can take comfort knowing that it’s lap record is going to be as safe as can get, at least for the time being.

Family sedans might not be the hottest thing on the market, having given that spot to crossovers and SUVs, but the humble four-door is certainly not down and out. Volkswagen set out to capture more of this market with the revised 2016 Passat. It wears an updated face, has a new rear end, and even sees some updated bits on the dashboard. Volkswagen even says it redesigned the 2016 Passat to appeal towards American buyers who want muscular lines and upscale interiors.

In reality, you’d have to be a Volkswagen enthusiast to spot the differences without a side-by-side comparison photo (which we have in the Exterior section below.) Nevertheless, the changes are apparent and the Passat feels more mature and less bulbous for it.

The changes inside are equally minimal but no less important. A slight change in the dashboard’s shape and trim piece are all that’s new for 2016. However, the modest update gives the dash a more angular appearance, which mirrors the Passat’s fresh face.

To see how these changes impacted the Passat, I spent a week driving a 2016 model like I would if I owned it. Trips to the grocery store, the Lacrosse field, preschool, and even date night at the movie theater were all taken. My four-year-old’s car seat was buckled in the back seat and the trunk was filled with everyday items. This is a departure from [my last experience with the 2016 Passat. Volkswagen had flown me to Vermont in 2015 to experience the car when it first launched, so I knew what to expect. This time the car was on my home turf in Central Florida. So how’d it do? 2016 Volswagen Golf R - Driven

Functionality meets fun

The Volkswagen Golf R has been long awaited here in the U.S. where customers have pining for this Europe-only car to make its appearance Stateside. Now with the 2016 model year, that wish has finally come true. The anticipation is justifiable when considering Volkswagen first debuted the Golf R32 back in 2003. It featured the first dual-clutch gearbox in any production car and had VW’s then-new 3.2-liter VR6. It set the bar extremely high in the hot hatch segment.

Volkswagen has plenty of competitors out there, but the Golf R still holds its own. It comes with 4Motion AWD, a standard six-speed manual or the optional six-speed DSG automatic, and of course, the 292-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Those mechanicals are good for a sub-five-second launch to 60 mph and more fun on public roads than Johnny Law will allow.

At the same time, the Golf R is still… well, a Golf. It boasts 52.7 cubic feet of cargo room with the second row folded. There’s still 22.8 cubic feet of room with the second row locked in place. That means the Golf R is not only fun, but it’s functional. Obviously, that’s the appeal of a hot hatch. There’s little compromise unlike a 2+2 sports coupe or larger, heavier crossover.

I recently spent a week with the Golf R fitted with the DSG, DCC, and no N-A-V. Punny acronyms aside, the car was well equipped, but not loaded. Thankfully it had Apple CarPlay (and Android Auto) so I was able to use my iPhone for navigation. So what’s it like to live with the Golf R? I’ll let you know below.

That Wildlife Park in Beijing is no Joke; Tigers Eat People and Volkswagens

This is one place where people, under any circumstances, shouldn’t take their cars

The Badaling Wildlife World animal park in Beijing, China has earned a notorious reputation in recent days over the spate of incidents that have happened within its premises. Just last week, the zoo made global headlines when a woman was mauled to death by a Siberian tiger after the woman got out of her car in the middle of the safari-style tour. Then a few days ago, another group of tourists found themselves in close contact with another Siberian tiger that tore the front bumper clean off of their Volkswagen Jetta. No injuries were reported in this encounter.

Thanks to footage taken from the dash cam inside the Jetta, we get a close look at the moment the tiger decided to give the Jetta its own version of a facelift by biting the bumper before pulling the whole thing off of the rest of the car. Thinking that it may have found an afternoon snack, the tiger retreats back into the woods and starts going to town on the front bumper.

The owners of the VW Jetta managed to have the bumper returned to them when they finished up on the tour. A quick examination of the panel revealed huge holes just beside the license plate where the tiger took a bite out of it. Fortunately, the bumper was the only casualty in this incident, a far happier outcome than the poor lady who that was mauled and the park employee that was killed by an elephant back in March 2016.

Not that it’s obvious at this point, but if somebody wants to keep their car in good and working condition, the Badaling Wildlife World animal park in Beijing, China is one of the last places you should go to.

EVO Pits The Ford Focus RS Against The Volkswagen Golf R In A Hot Hatch Drag Race: Video

The American pocket rocket takes on the German scuttlebug

The Volkswagen Golf R and the Ford Focus RS present an interesting conundrum for those looking for a hot hatch worth its salt. Both models can arguably claim to being the best of the lot and both make valid points for doing so. On paper, the Focus RS has the edge. It’s got almost 50 horsepower and 67 pound-feet of torque over the Golf R. It also has a smoother gear transition, particularly on the lower gears, making it easier for the Focus RS to get off the block quicker than the VW rival. On the flip side, the Golf R is around 80 pounds lighter than the Ford and that lighter weight makes up for some of the VW’s perceived shortcomings.

And so, when it comes to figuring out which of the two is better, there are some ways to do it, including having both the Golf and Focus RS line up side-by-side for good ‘ol fashion drag race. EVO took the task of doing just that by setting up a race between the two pocket rockets. As expected, the Focus RS shot off the line much quicker than the Golf R, quickly establishing a 0.5-second gap in the race to 60 mph. But just as quickly, the Golf R comes roaring back and by the time the two cars hit the quarter-mile, the Focus RS’s lead drops to just 0.2 seconds, the same difference between the two cars when they both hit the half-mile.

In the end, the Focus RS nudges past the Golf R in the race to 130 mph, beating the Volkswagen by 0.6 seconds. For a car that supposedly has close to 50 horsepower on the other, that’s not much of a difference. All this points to one undeniable truth: both the Volkswagen Golf R and the Ford Focus RS are worthy contenders to the title of the best hot hatch in the market.

And since the Focus RS is finally headed to the U.S., it’s now important to look at the price comparison between the two. Not surprisingly, it’s almost dead even too as the Volkswagen Golf R retails for $36,595 compared to the Focus RS’s starting price of $36,605. That’s a $10 difference, by the way.
