The Volkswagen I.D. R Is The Fastest Car Ever Around The Goodwood Hillclimb Course
Volkswagen continues to impress us with its I.D. R race car, the moving technology lab of the giant from Wolfsburg, one that’s been created to break records and, in the process, prove to the world that Volkswagen’s EVs will knock everybody out of the park. Last weekend, during the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed Romain Dumas driving a revised version of the I.D. R did just that, making every other car that has ever run on Lord March’s Hillclimb course seem pedestrian as he smashed the all-time record set 20 years ago in a full-blown Formula 1 car.
There are still many that will never bring themselves to even accept electric cars as the way forward, let alone try and like them. While this is true, it’s also true that cars like Volkswagen’s I.D. R are surely turning heads among even the most hardcore fans of the old-school internal combustion engine. This car has, in the space of little over 12 months, smashed the all-time record at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb and then did the same around the Nurburgring-Nordschleife with a time fast enough to make it the second fastest car around that track ever. That it also broke the EV record at Goodwood last year seems almost moot given what Dumas did this year with the car.
The Volkswagen ID.R Just Slaughtered the Nurburgring - Here’s How Fast
Do you hear it? It’s the Volkswagen PR machine stomping the ground and announcing far and wide that the halo car of the I.D. family has just annihilated the Nurburgring-Nordschleife circuit in Germany and, in the process, put a new benchmark lap time for EVs. The time? A 6:05.336 after many tryout laps and other tests that have commenced in April. Is it noteworthy? Most certainly. Is it as noteworthy as VW would want you to believe? Not really. Bear with me to see what I’m talking about.
Last year, Volkswagen sent shockwaves around the world when Frenchman Romain Dumas claimed victory and shattered the previous all-time record set by rally legend Sebastien Loeb in 2013 at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. Already an overall winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours race and a three-time winner of the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, Dumas pulled the feat aboard Volkswagen’s cutting-edge I.D.-R, a purpose-built prototype made for the Race to the Clouds. He followed that up by raising the bar on Lord March’s driveway and setting a new EV record during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Since late last year, we’ve heard that the German giant is after the record and it all came down now. The NIO EP9’s reign is no more.
Is The VW ID R About To Tackle The Nurburgring?
As one of the most astounding racing cars in the world, the electric Volkswagen ID R seems to be gunning for the Nurburgring Lap Record. Sources close to the company reported that Volkswagen actually booked the track for May next year. We suspect it will try to send the slightly retuned electric ID R to that very track in order to slash the electric car record and take the scalp off the Nio EP9. That one managed to lap the Green Hell in 6 minutes 45.9 seconds. It is, obviously, a really fast car. Yet, considering the blistering Volkswagen ID R hill climb run at Pikes Peak where it smashed the previous record by 15 seconds and managed to finish the course in 7min 57.148 seconds, I can only imagine it will do the same at Nurburgring.

This summer, Volkswagen conquered the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race with their fantastic I.D. R prototype, which was driven by Romain Dumas up the mountain in a record time of 7:57.148, 16 seconds under Sebastien Loeb’s 5-year-old record.
Motorsport is still a relevant marketing tool and battle-scarred Volkswagen decided the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the perfect place to showcase its electric technology. The race, which has been going since 1916, sees competitors climb up the 12.42-mile-long course all the way to 14,000 feet. Nowadays, there’s no more dirt at Pikes Peak, but that doesn’t make the challenge itself any less daunting.
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Earns a Land Speed Record at the Bonneville Salt Flats
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has entered the record books after setting the land speed record for its class and displacement at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The Jetta set the record with a run that reached 210.16 mph, breaking the previous record of 208.472 mph. The achievement didn’t come with its share of problems, but ultimately, Volkswagen and the team behind this particular Jetta, THR Manufacturing, managed to troubleshoot their way into the record books, putting a successful lid on an attempt that was months in the making.
Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak Breaks Electric Record at Goodwood FOS
This weekend saw the 25th running of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and with it, a host of impressive machinery came out to strut their stuff up the short hillclimb course. While there was certainly no shortage of fast cars on hand, one in particular stood out from the rest, as the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak managed to reset the record books for all-electric racers at the event.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Bonneville Salt Flats Record Car
Hot on the wheels of the Volkswagen I.D. R’s record-breaking run at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, Volkswagen is setting its sights on a new record, this time at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah. As part of its goal of breaking the Southern California Timing Association’s BGC/G class record, the German automaker is preparing a heavily modified version of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Among the upgrades that will be included is a heavily modified version of VW’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged, EA888 four-cylinder engine.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S Is The Monster Of The Green Hell: Video
Life can be a little boring when you already own the front-wheel drive lap record at the Nürburgring. So when you’re at the top, the only way you can go a little higher is when you take a stab at your own record. Lo and behold, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S did just that when it went back to the ‘Ring to upend its own record.
Taking full advantage of ideal weather conditions (46°F) back in late October, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S put in a scintillating lap time of 7:47.19, eclipsing its previous record of 7:49.21 by more than two seconds. Not only did it smash its own record, but it also extended its lead over the Honda Civic Type R, which held the record with a lap time of 7:50.63 before the Golf ran roughshod over it during its initial run at the Green Hell. Do some calculations and the Golf GTI Clubsport S’ new lap record is 3.44 seconds faster than the Civic Type R.
The new lap time is made more impressive when you line it up against the overall lap times around the 13-mile race track. With this lap time, the Golf GTI Clubsport S positions itself between the Lamborghini Murcielago LP-640 and the BMW M3 GTS, two performance cars that know their own business around the Nürburgring.
At the very least, the VW hot hatch just made it a lot more difficult for other front-wheel drive cars to break its new lap record. Not that it would’ve been easy to do with the old record, but now, the German automaker can take comfort knowing that it’s lap record is going to be as safe as can get, at least for the time being.

2016 Volkswagen Beetle LSR
How do you make a modern Volkswagen Beetle cool? Well, you start by infusing it with a bubble bursting 600 horsepower, slam it on the ground, throw in lots of racing equipment, and a set of wheels and tires suited for the Salt Flats. Then, after you do all of that, you take it to the Salt Flats and push it harder than any Beetle has ever gone before. How fast it that? Well; fast enough that it would fly if it had wings. Alright, in all seriousness, though. The Beetle you see here just hit 205.122 mph over a flying mile, which just so happens to be the fastest time ever recorded for a Beetle.
It all went down in Wendover, Utah during the 2016 World of Speed event that is hosted by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association with Contributing Editor for Automobile Magazine, Preston Lerner, at the helm. The Beetle LSR obviously isn’t your average Beetle and was extensively modified, including engine work by none other than THR Manufacturing out of Santa Paula, California.
"Exceeding 200 miles per hour in the Beetle LSR was a serious thrill," said Lerner. "We had enough power to go even faster if the salt hadn’t been so sketchy. But seeing 208 miles per hour briefly on the digital readout was an experience I’ll never forget."
Volkswagen’s Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy, Dr. Hendrik Muth, was very happy with the LSR’s performance, saying, “We are completely thrilled with the Beetle LSR’s performance at Bonneville. The Beetle is not the most aerodynamic car in our portfolio, so running 205 mph is a testament to the power that can be made from the EA888 TSI four-cylinder engine. This feat truly underscores the sporty and pugnacious spirit of the Beetle.”

2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S
The GTI event at Lake Worthersee has officially kicked off, and with that kickoff, Volkswagen has debuted the new king of the Golf GTI lineup: The Golf GTI Clubsport S. The car is based on the Golf GTI Clubsport, but has gone through numerous upgrades and refinements to make it the fastest and lightest Golf GTI yet. In short, Volkswagen engineers were able to reduce the car’s overall weight to 2,998 pounds while upping permanent engine output to an impressive 306 horsepower – that’s a 30 horsepower increase over the standard Golf Clubsport. The Clubsport S will be produced in just 400 examples.
The whole idea of the Clubsport S came about during the testing of the final version of the Golf GTI Performance. Karsten Schebsdat, the Head of Chassis Tuning, said, “It was obvious to all of us that this GTI had immense potential, so we decided to get the most performance possible out of this car. A small team went through the entire process, from bottom to top, pretty much like it was back when the first Golf GTI came into being.” Needless to say, it wasn’t an easy task and VW engineers had to put in a lot of work, but that work paid off.
The payoff came when the Golf GTI Clubsport S smashed the lap record at the Nürburgring for front-wheel-drive production cars. With Benny Leuchter behind the wheel, the car hit the lap in 07:49:21 – that’s 1.4 seconds faster than the previous record that was set by a Honda Civic Type R. To make this possible, the Clubsport S received a special sport chassis, refined interior, and an extensively adapted engine control unit that all helped to raise the crowned Clubsport S above the standard Golf GTI Clubsport it was based on. Yet another Guinness World Record for fuel economy was recently announced, this time coming from the U.S. and the folks over at VW. The latest is that a 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI managed to set a new benchmark in the category of “lowest fuel consumption – 48 U.S. contiguous states for a non-hybrid car” by eking out 81.17 mpg, besting the previous record of 77.99 mpg. The super-efficient run even managed to beat out the standing hybrid vehicle record of 74.34 mpg.
The Golf managed to visit each of the 48 contiguous states in an 8,233.5-mile mega-journey that lasted 16 days and burned just 101.43 gallons of diesel fuel. Only $294.98 was spent on fill-ups.
The record-setting vehicle set off from the Volkswagen of America headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, on Monday, June 22nd, returning a little over two weeks later on Tuesday July 7th.
At the wheel was Wayne Gerdes, an automotive journalist and the founder of cleanmpg.com. Gerdes has extensive experience in the realm of hypermiling, having set mileage records in more than 100 different vehicles, including the previous record of 77.99 mpg set in 2013 driving a 2013 VW Passat TDI. Bob Winger, an electronics engineer involved in energy and conservation projects, joined him as co-driver.
The car was outfitted with Goodyear low rolling-resistance Fuel Max tires, a Linear Logic ScanGauge II device to measure fuel economy, G4 smartphones from LG and a GPS nav system from Garmin to meet the Guinness tracking requirements.

Back in August 2012, Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid established an impressive speed record of 185.394 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Just a couple of short months later, the vehicle returned to the scene of the victory to break its own record, and succeeded in doing so! The car averaged 186.313 mph over two runs during the SCTA’s World Finals event, eclipsing the previous record by 18.8 mph. Even more impressive is that, during the first round, it hit a top speed of 187.147 mph.
For those who do not remember, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid combines a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline generating 150 HP and 184 lb/ft of torque with an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery that produces an additional 27 HP. The battery consists of 60 individual cells with a combined energy capacity of 5 Ah.
"We’re very proud that the Jetta Hybrid has not only posted the fastest speed for a hybrid at Bonneville, but that it has gone out and broken an SCTA land speed record as well," said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, Volkswagen Group of America. "Achieving this record at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class, offering excellent fuel economy while retaining the fun-to-drive nature expected from a Volkswagen."
World speed records are usually associated with vehicles like the Bugatti Veyron, which can hit a high mark of 267 mph and look great while doing it. Advances in hybrid technology, however, have now made it essential to include vehicles like the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid on the list of top speed records. No, the Jetta was not able to dominate the Veyron’s top speed, or even come close to it, but it has achieved a land speed record of its own at the Bonneville Salt Flats. During the Southern California Timing Association’s Speed Week at Bonneville, the Jetta Hybrid was able to record a 185.394 mph top speed, marking the fastest speed ever achieved by a production-based hybrid on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
"Achieving this speed at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class,” said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, VW Group of America. “As well as being expected to achieve combined fuel economy of 45 mpg, the Jetta Turbo Hybrid also retains the fun-to-drive nature you expect from a Volkswagen in a segment dominated by less exciting vehicles.”
The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline powerplant generating 150 horsepower and 184 lb/ft of torque. The gasoline engine is then combined with a 20kW electric motor with a lithium-ion battery that’s produces an additional 27 HP and weighs less than 80 lbs. The Jetta’s top speed record was achieved by implementing a few changes to the setup. Volkswagen R&D in Wolfsburg, Germany modified the engine to provide a few more ponies, while A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering, based in Camarillo, California, provided project integration and other modifications. Everything was finalized with an engine calibration and a once-over by the folks at the Volkswagen Test Center California in Oxnard, CA
In the high-octane, torque-twisting world of the drag strip, a paradigm shift is slowly taking shape with the most unlikely of cars leading the way. Unassuming look aside, the “Black Current” Volkswagen Beetle EV by Oliver Young is an electric vehicle that has done some serious damage on the drag strip becoming the first street-bodied EV to post a nine-second, quarter-mile time. That time looks more impressive when you take into account the fact that this little Beetle once destroyed a Tesla Roadster on a drag strip.
While it’s not the fastest quarter-mile time ever posted by an EV – that title belongs to the Current Eliminator, which covered the same distance in seven seconds at 160 mph – the Black Current does hold the record for being the fastest ‘street-bodied’ EV in the world - at least until proven otherwise.
For now, though, Oliver Young can stake claim to this tremendous achievement and on a grander scale, he and his ‘Black Current’ Beetle EV are giving EVs the proper exposure in the world of drag racing, something that was unheard of as late as a decade ago.

It may not be the type of record that gets us all out of our seats, but it’s still a record worth mentioning, especially for those that gets their thrills on the exciting world of fuel efficiency.
A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion set the Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by an unmodified production vehicle carrying a single tank of gas. The record, which was set by fellow scribe Gavin Conway of the Sunday Times, covered a distance of 1,526.63 miles while carrying 77.25 liters – about 20.41 gallons – of gas.
To verify the authenticity of the record-breaking attempt, Conway, together with his navigator and video crew, was accompanied by a pair of Automobile Association patrolmen for the entire duration of the trip. Speaking of the car’s fuel efficiency, the Passat ran at an average of 45 mph while consuming 74.88 US mpg or 3.4 liters/100km, breaking its previous combined average of 53.46 US mpg or 4.40 liter/100km.
Those numbers aren’t exactly the type of figures that gets us all geeked up, but hey, a record is a record. And so, we tip our hats off to Mr. Conway and the Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion for their record-breaking performance.
Volkswagen is using their clean diesel Jetta TDI in an attempt o break the current world record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States. The car will be driven by the world’s most fuel efficient drivers, John and Helen Taylor. The Jetta TDI are fueled by Shell’s best diesel fuel.
The couple will drive on a counter-clockwise route and plan to pass through these cities: Chantilly, Va.; Rutland, V.T.; Toledo, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; Spearfish, S.D.; Missoula, Mont.; Winnemucca, Nev.; Santa Monica, Calif.; Durango, Colo.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mount Vernon, Ill.; Ponchatoula, La.; and, Beckley, W. Va. Some of the Shell FuelStretch tactics the Taylors will employ on the road include: avoiding idling and higher speeds, minimizing vehicle drag and performing regular vehicle maintenance.
