The XC60 is ready to take on the competition with a new look and ample engine offerings

The Volvo XC60 has been around since 2008 and was updated for the 2014 model year. Nine years after its introduction to the market, Volvo decided it was time to usher in a new generation, and usher one in they did. The new-gen model comes complete with a new design inside and out, new safety systems that include steer assist and oncoming lane mitigation, and a new “CleanZone” climate control system that is said to remove harmful pollutants from the air outside of the cabin when the ventilation system is functioning. Volvo will offer the new XC60 with its T8 hybrid powertrain, the D4 and D5 diesel powertrains, and the T5 and T6 gasoline powertrains for a power range that stretches between 190 horsepower and as much as 407 horsepower. In the right configuration, this SUV can hit 62 mph in 5.3 seconds.

“The XC60 is an SUV not designed to look down on others but to drive. The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials, and the very latest technology - all perfectly blended together. The XC60 provides a true Scandinavian experience which will make our customers feel special,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design at Volvo Car Group.

So, it all sounds pretty good, right? Well, let’s take a closer look at the new XC60 to see if it really lives up to all that hype.

Is Volvo Working on Another Version of the XC60 or Just Showing Off?

Is Volvo Working on Another Version of the XC60 or Just Showing Off?

It was caught on Paris streets over the weekend in heavy camo

The second-generation Volvo XC60 made its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with an all-new design inside and out, new safety systems, and a new climate control system called “CleanZone.” It’s a beautiful car, insanely comfortable, and it has all of the right technology. So, why did we catch it cruising around the streets of Paris this weekend under extremely heavy camo? At first, we thought this might be a next-gen XC70, but once we compared the two shots we have here to older spy shots, it was pretty clear that this is an XC60 mule. But again; why?

Perhaps Volvo was just trying to pull one over on us since April 1st just so happened to fall on Saturday – you know, to generate more interest in the new generation before it goes on sale later this year. Or, are they testing that T8 hybrid version? It does have an opening for the charging port on the front, left fender. But, then again, so did the old test mules. It could be that Volvo is prepping a Polestar variant of the new XC60 and wants to put in the work under camouflage since the new XC60 isn’t available quite yet. That would be a nice surprise come fall when the new XC60 goes on sale, don’t you think?

Either way, this thing was cruising around Paris all weekend, so Volvo has something up its sleeve. Keep reading to find out what I think is going on.

Watch the 2018 Volvo XC60 get Demolished for Safety's Sake

Watch the 2018 Volvo XC60 get Demolished for Safety’s Sake

Crash testing reveals weakness – thankfully the XC90 doesn’t have any

Ah the crash test – it involves slamming a brand new car into an object to determine how well it holds up during an accident. There’s the small frontal overlap test, the moderate overlap test, the side impact test, and rollover test, among others. Well, the all-new 2018 Volvo XC60 just underwent the full barrage, getting slammed seven ways to Sunday. And it turns out (not surprisingly, really) that Volvo built an exceptionally safe crossover.

The videos below show the testing methods, as well as the mechanical carnage involved. The high-speed, slow motion film captures details not otherwise seen by the naked eye. The shots are almost beautiful in nature, though hauntingly eerie when considering those dummies represent real people like you and your family. That realization makes knowing the XC60’s good performance that much sweeter.

You won’t hear IIHS, NHTSA, or NCAP scores for these tests, however. These were actually done in-house by Volvo at its Stockholm-based Safety Center long before the XC60’s debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

For those who don’t know, Volvo is on a mission to have zero fatalities or serious injuries in its new vehicles by 2020. It’s a lofty goal, but one that’s far less self-serving than most long-term goals automakers make.

Anyway, for those wanting to see the XC60 in action, click past the jump for the videos.

Volvo Will Build XC60 And S60 In Its US Plant

Volvo Will Build XC60 And S60 In Its US Plant

Volvo’s recently announced plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina near Charleston will build the brand’s most popular cars in the U.S. The news comes from CEO of Volvo Cars of North America Lex Kerssemakers, who recently spoke with Automotive News about plans for the new plant, saying, “we will select a model that will be in the highest demand in the United States."

Volvo’s best sellers in the U.S. right now are the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover, but Kerssemakers went on to say that the upcoming XC90 SUV would not be built at the new plant.

Following the leads of Mercedes-Benz in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina, Volvo’s new southeastern plant represents a $500 million investment. Construction will begin in fall of 2015, and it should be online by 2018. The new plant will initially create 2,000 new jobs for the area, with that number increasing to 4,000 as production ramps up.

Volvo says the new factory will have a capacity of about 100,000 cars per year, and will be one of three in the world tooled to build cars based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture. The company sold 56,366 units in the U.S. last year, but with 14 new vehicles coming over the next five years, Volvo is projecting a sharp increase in demand.

Volvo Launches The Greatest Interception Ever; Or Your Chance To Get A XC60

Volvo Launches The Greatest Interception Ever; Or Your Chance To Get A XC60

Volvo won’t be among the large number of automakers that you’ll see advertising in this weekend’s Super Bowl XLIX, but if you are a Twitter user, there’s a good chance you will still hear plenty about the Swedish brand during the Big Game. Rather than spending the millions of dollars for a 30-second Super Bowl ad, Volvo is “intercepting” the commercials from rival automakers by giving away a 2015 XC60 crossover.

To enter the Volvo Interception contest, all you have to do is wait for any car commercial to come on during the Super Bowl (don’t worry, there will be plenty) and then post a tweet with a person’s name who you think should win the car along with the hashtag #VolvoContest. Volvo says it will respond to all “eligible tweets” to ask why that person deserves a new car. The best part is that you can nominate anyone: a friend, neighbor, family member or just someone you know in passing. Talk about the ultimate way to pay it forward.

From there, a panel of five judges will whittle the list of entrants down to just five potential winners. Rules state that the participants and the winner must be legal residents of the U.S. and at least 18 years old, and are limited to one nominee per Twitter account. Other than that, Volvo did not say what will go into its decision when picking the grand prize winner, so sharpen up your writing skills and think of someone you know who deserves a new car.

As a bit of a dry run before Volvo attempts to break Twitter by giving away a free car, Jimmy Kimmel Live also took part in the contest, giving away a new XC60 to a nurse at a car wash, which you can check out here.

2015 Volvo Ocean Race XC60

2015 Volvo Ocean Race XC60

Volvo has received its fair share of criticism for building boring cars in the past. Sometimes, it deserves it. Sometimes, it doesn’t. But the Swedish brand does have one model that has consistently drawn admirers since it made its debut in 2008. That would be the XC60, Volvo’s entry-level crossover and the company’s best-selling model since 2009. The XC60’s popularity makes it the perfect vehicle to get a limited edition variant dedicated to a sporting event that has a certain Swedish automaker as its title sponsor. Hence, we have the Volvo Ocean Race X60.

The Volvo Ocean Race XC60 made its debut at the 2014 Miami International Auto Show, which runs from November 7 to 16. In keeping with the spirit of the triennial race, the Volvo Ocean Race XC60 carries special design elements attributed to the event, including a splashy “Ocean Blue II” exterior paint finish and a morsel of identifiable design pieces that are associated to the Volvo Ocean Race.

The limited-edition XC60 is available in the T6 Drive-E FWD and T6 AWD trims options and will be available at prices of $42,100 and $43,600 respectively.

2015 Volvo XC60 - Driven

2015 Volvo XC60 - Driven

Volvo is the king of the family-hauling luxury SUV. When the XC90 hit the scene, it began a slow domination of the three-row market. Soon after, the Swedish automaker moved into the smaller market with the XC60 and once again, Volvo had a relative hit for the brand. Now for the new 2015.5 model, the XC60 is updated, upgraded and supposedly better than ever, and I was going to drive the new, more fuel efficient T6 Drive-E model.

As someone who ordinarily hates family hauling crossovers, but loves nicely designed cars like those from Sweden, I was interested in giving this car a run for its money. One of my favorite small hatches of all time is the Volvo C30, so would Volvo be able to make me like a crossover?

It is great to look at, has lots of nice details and features, plus it has 300 horsepower under the hood. I took the keys for a week and a few hundred miles to see if it was worth buying. Would the fuel saving features ruin the fun? Would the generally boring driving dynamics of a family car make me hate driving it?

2015 Volvo XC60 and S80 Inscription Package

2015 Volvo XC60 and S80 Inscription Package

When talking about Volvo, safety is the first thing that comes to mind. The Swedes have been one step ahead, as far as safety is concerned, for decades now. But Volvo is more than that. Although it lags behind the German premium automakers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi in terms of sales, the Chinese-owned brand’s lineup is as luxurious as it gets.

With the U.S. having remained Volvo’s largest market in 2013, the automaker is bound to look toward improving its position in North America. Its first steps were the 2015 V60 station wagon and the introduction of the new Drive-E engine family, but now the Swedes have announced that the S80 sedan and XC60 crossover will receive an even more luxurious package for the 2015 model year.

Dubbed Inscription, the new range-topping trim level take the aforementioned vehicles up a notch by wrapping the interior in Sovereign Hide soft leather upholstery and adding a few more premium features inside and out. The exterior options, for instance, will include three extra body colors (White Pearl, Electric Silver and Ember Black) and 19-inch wheels for the S80 and 20-inch rollers for the XC60, both with a ten-spoke design.

2014 Volvo Ocean Race Edition

2014 Volvo Ocean Race Edition

Volvo’s rise back to relevancy has caught the auto industry’s attention. At the Geneva Motor Show, the Swedish automaker is prepared to take it to another level with the upcoming release of its third and final concept car.

But before that, Volvo’s also introducing its new Ocean Race lineup for the V40, V40 Cross Country, V60 and XC60. Each model will be given the "Ocean Race" nomenclature and will come with an assortment of colors, including Ocean Blue II, Bright Silver, Black Sapphire and Crystal White.

In addition, each of the Ocean Race models also stand to receive either black or blonde leather upholstery with matching orange stitching, as well as "Volvo Ocean Race" branded sill plates. The same stitching is also be found on the door panels and floor mats, with the latter also carrying a special rubber tag attached. And in case there’s any confusion on the uniqueness of these models, the V60 and XC60’s load cover will be decorated with a Volvo Ocean Race map and logo.

For their part, the V70 and XC70 Ocean Race editions have their own unique offerings, including high-gloss black accents, a special set of 17- or 18-inch Portunus-style alloy wheels, and a lowered suspension that’s exclusive to the V70. Likewise, both models come with black leather seats, cream contrast stitching and sport pedals.

The Volvo Ocean Race Editions will make their debuts at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show before going into production this spring.

2014 Volvo XC60

The current-generation XC60 was unveiled in 2008 and the revision announced at 2013 Geneva Motor Show is the most impressive one. In fact, Volvo opted to update the entire lineup, before unveiling the new generation.

Just like with all the other models, Volvo only updated the XC60’s exterior and interior with design elements in a way similar to the one initially revealed in the new V40, which was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This means it receives a redesigned hood, new front bumper and new headlamps on the outside. On the inside, it receives new materials and packages.

Volvo also includes a series of new safety features and convenience features that took the XC60 to the next level of elegance and sophistication.

Volvo adds 2010 XC60 to their airbag recall

Volvo adds 2010 XC60 to their airbag recall

About a month ago, we reported on a safety recall being done by Volvo over an improperly manufactured airbag system covering a certain number of Volvo models, including the 2010-2011 models of the S80 and XC70 as well as 2011 models of the V70 and the XC60.

Unfortunately for Volvo, another model seems to be experiencing the same problem after the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration reported that 58 units of the 2010 Volvo XC60 are all suffering from the same problem.

Just to remind you, the recall is being done due to a problem with the driver’s airbag “clock spring wiring connector for the supplemental restraint system”. The problem causes the airbag to improperly deploy should a crash occur, risking more injury to driver’s involved in the crash.

So if any of you are driving a 2010 Volvo XC60, it’s highly advisable that you contact your local dealers and have them inspect the car for the potentially dangerous problem. In the event that it needs to get them fixed, you should have your dealers fix it as soon as possible.

Despite our fascination for fast cars and exotics, one thing still holds true for us: safety always comes first.

2011 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 enters the 2011 model year with no major changes on either the exterior or the interior. What it does get is a new Pedestrian Detection with a full auto brake safety system and a new infotainment system, similar to the one found in the S60.

The new Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake safety system works together to ensure that no pedestrian will get hurt due to unfortunate incident. The system uses radar and camera technology to watch for pedestrians at the front of the car. The system will alert the driver who can then act accordingly by either braking or steering clear of the pedestrian. If the driver is distracted in any way and does not brake or steer away then the auto brake system will stop the vehicle right before the vehicle hits the pedestrian.

The Volvo XC60 will come powered with a choice of a four-cylinder direct-injected 1.6-liter and a 2-liter GTDi engine.

Small plane crashes into Volvo XC60

Small plane crashes into Volvo XC60

Proving that there’s still some people out there that will help anyone in trouble despite being on the receiving end of a car crash, the driver and the passenger of this Volvo XC60, which had a small plane crash into it, came to the aid of the injured pilot. Apparently, the plane was landing when it quickly took off again before appearing to try a second landing. This second attempt lead the small aircraft into the back end of the Volvo. Officers are still not clear on whether this was a mechanical or human error.

Despite having their SUV completely totaled, both the driver and the passenger immediately got out of their wrecked ride to ensure that the pilot, who was pretty banged up from the car, was out of harm’s way. Fortunately, fire crews were already in the vicinity when the crash happened thanks to a drag racing event to which the XC60 was a part of.

The pilot was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after this traumatizing ordeal. Fortunately, there are still good people out there with the instinct to help, despite being the wronged party during this unbelievable ordeal.

Volvo XC30 to Arrive in 2012

Volvo XC30 to Arrive in 2012

Two years ago, we began hearing rumors about Volvo creating a soft-roader with the inner workings of the Volvo C30 and the styling of the Volvo XC60. After being in the pipeline for so long, those rumors were finally confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show by Volvo’s President for Overseas Corporate Strategy, Lex Kerssemakers. He says, "There will be some further expansion of the XC range in the near future."

Generally speaking, society is becoming more environmentally and economically conscious. The trends that we have seen with cars such as the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 are that of a market wanting more for less. The photo shown here is a rendering of what the Volvo XC 30 might eventually look like. Starting off as a 3-door and possibly moving to a 5-door, this compact crossover shows us that the days of those big, heavy SUVs - along with their ridiculous gas mileage - just might be a thing of the past.

Video: Volvo’s new ’New Moon’ commercial

With the up-coming launch of the much-ballyhooed second installment of the Twilight saga, ‘New Moon,’ the stars of the film are quickly ramping up promotional and marketing efforts to get people to watch the movie. Now, you might think that when we say ‘stars’, we’d be talking about Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart, right?

Not exactly.

In this commercial by Volvo, the Swedish car company – and also the official car for the movie – releases a trailer of sorts to promote the new movie. The only thing different about this one from the other New Moon trailers is that Volvo is promoting the movies’ ‘other stars’, in particular, the Volvo C30 and XC60.

Apparently, Volvo thinks that being associated with pale-skinned vampires would be reason enough for people to come watch the movie.

2010 Volvo XC60 R-Design

2010 Volvo XC60 R-Design

Volvo is set to reveal this R-Design version of the XC60 SUV. The new high performance crossover will be on display September 17th at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This rendering accentuates the hot rod’s muscular curves and stretched rear corners. Color matching is the of the major themes of the R-Design package, and with that bold a shade of red, why not slather it everywhere, except for the satin metal mirror housings and flush mounted roof rails of course. The Volvo design team decided to use a little bit of chrome to highlight the grill and air intakes.

Just like the running boards, the signature wheels wear XC engraving. The rims are five spoke Cratus aluminium rolling stock and are unique for the R-Design models. The standard XC wheel measures 18 inches in diameter, but on the R-Design, you get 20s as part of the purposeful and bold appearance. You need a wheel that large to fill the wheel well of an XC with standard ride height, maintaining that all important ground clearance that is so important for off-roading.

The interior will be made up of a dark color scheme centralized by a vertical center stack with a round interface in the middle and sport seats that are said to be “for cornering.” With all of the options in the aftermarket for tuning a slightly larger method of transportation, it is nice to see that the factory has already looked at a red-hot version. Like most styling exercises from the Swedish automaker, the XC 60 R-Design Concept should be even better looking in real life.

Prices will start at just $39,000 for the XC60 T6 model, from $42,400 for a standard XC60 and for the R-Design package customers will have to pay an extra $3,900.

Customers will have the possibility to choose from three additional packages: climate package ($1000) which includes heated front and rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, and rain sensing wipers; the multimedia package ($2700) with a premium audio system, navigation with real time traffic updates, and a rearview camera; and the technology package ($1700) that includes adaptive cruise control, collision warning with automatic braking, driver alert control, and lane departure warning.

2009 Volvo XC60

Volvo revealed today the first official images and informations about the all-new 2009 XC60 that will make its world debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show. Sales of the car will start in Europe during the second half of 2008, while sales in North America will get under way in early 2009.

The new XC60 is being launched with a choice of three engines: the turbocharged T6 which produces 285 hp, and two variants of the D5 turbodiesel, producing 185 and 163 hp respectively. All Wheel Drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. In 2009 Volvo will add a new 2.4-litre version powered by a Euro 5 diesel engine producing 163 hp and with a CO2 rating of around 170 g/km.

A variety of intelligent safety systems are another important part of the XC60 model’s special character. The big news is City Safety - a unique feature that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and traffic tailbacks. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.

Volvo XC60 – Green Inside and Out

This early, Volvo’s XC60 has already been given some positive recognition. The Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association added the SUV to its list of highly recommended cars for allergy sufferers. It joins the S80, V70 and XC70 in the association’s list.

Volvo Cars developed the IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) and CZIP (Clean Zone Interior Package) to make sure that cabin air is as clean as possible. Studies show that close to 50% of people living in industrialized areas suffer from some form of allergy like asthma.

The company is showing serious commitment in creating vehicles that are both environment- and people- friendly.

Metallic surfaces inside the XC60 such as interior door handles and emblems on the steering wheel and shift knob have been made so as to reduce nickel content. The European Union regulates the amount of nickel which is allowed in products which come into contact with human skin. In addition, nickel dust is believed to be carcinogenic.

Volvo makes use of natural plant extracts in place of chrome to tan the car’s leather trim. All fabric and leather materials used for their vehicles meet Oeko-Tex Standard 100 requirements. This international testing and certification system has been in implementation since 1992 and seeks to regulate the use of certain chemicals in the production process.

The XC60, which was unveiled last spring in Geneva, has also been given an RRR (Reuse, Recycling, Recovery) Certification. In order to be given such an approval, Volvo had to demonstrate how the car is recycled upon reaching its maximum lifespan.

The Volvo XC60 Compact Crossover SUV will be available later this year.

Volvo will unveil the XC60 in March at the Geneva Motor Show, the production version of the XC60 Concept unveiled in Detroit in January 2007. This charismatic crossover vehicle integrates both the unmistakable, muscular XC-versatility and the sporty charisma of a coupe and takes Volvo into a new segment.

The XC60 will feature a bolder front end with a bigger badge and grille. It will remain faithful to the concept, except the 20" wheels and adding new-era, widely spaced V-o-l-v-o name spelt out on the bootlid. This will be Volvo’s answer to the BMW X3.

It will be offered with a wide range of engines, both petrol and diesel; all models will be permanent four-wheel drive.

Prices will begin at £25,000.
