  • Make: Array
  • Model: 2007 Volvo C70
  • [do not use] Vehicle Model: Array

Introduced last year, the all-new Volvo C70 offers the best of both worlds. It’s a modern convertible with classic proportions, four comfortable seats and a three-piece retractable hardtop. The C70 can be transformed seamlessly from a coupe into a convertible. The retractable hardtop folds away quickly and smoothly into the trunk. Apart from the flexibility offered by the retractable hardtop it also makes for a quieter, more comfortable coupe. The large rear window glass offers outstanding outward visibility and improves body rigidity.

An important part of the side impact and rollover protection is the Inflatable Curtain (IC). In the new C70 it has been given a unique design. The curtain has an extra stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other. This allows them to remain upright and offer effective head protection even with the window open. The curtain also deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over. This is a unique solution in the automotive world.

The C70 is designed to accommodate four adults. The two rear seats have comfortably angled backrests and generous width across the supportive cushions. Like all Volvo cars, the front seats are ergonomically shaped. With a push of a button on the backrest, the front seats move quickly forward to facilitate entry to the rear seat. With the top up, the C70's trunk volume is a generous 12.8 cubic feet. With the hard top stowed, there is still 6.8 cubit feet of storage and the unique load-assist feature allows the top to be partially raised so that packages in the trunk are more readily accessible.

Inspired by Scandinavian tradition, the interior presents clean surfaces, genuine materials and clever functionality. The super-thin center stack, introduced in the Volvo S40 sport sedan and V50 sport wagon can also be found in the C70. Special upholstery, called Vulcaflex, is a synthetic material with a skin-like surface and a high-tech feel. Leather seating surfaces are available with the Premium Package.

Driving pleasure adds another dimension to the C70 with its standard turbocharged T5 engine. The 2.5-liter light-pressure turbo powerplant produces 218 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 236 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 to 4,800 rpm. The flat torque curve puts the power to the front wheels evenly and makes the car highly responsive.

The C70 is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox that was developed for the Volvo S60 R and V70 R. All six forward gears are adapted to combine rapid acceleration with a high top speed. The gearbox has triple synchros and a very distinct gear change feel. A five-speed “Geartronic” micro-processor controlled automatic with “Auto-stick” function is optional.

Audio systems for the C70 have been developed to offer high-class sound reproduction with the top up or down. The standard high performance system features a 4 x 40 watt amplifier and eight speakers. Those seeking the ultimate audio experience will find it in the optional Dynaudio Premium Sound system. It features an amazing total output of 910 watts of power, plus Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound and 14 speakers, including dual eight-inch woofers.

Minor changes to the C70 for 2007 include a standard auxiliary audio input plus MP3 playback capability from the in-dash CD changer. Sirius Satellite Radio is a new option for the C70.

Launch

The all new Volvo C70 is the second-generation convertible from Volvo Cars. The aim was to create two cars in one – without compromising on either. A three-piece retractable hardtop transforms the Volvo C70 from coupe to convertible at the touch of a button.

The all new Volvo C70 has been developed in close cooperation with Pininfarina of Italy.

Design

Two-door convertible/coupe with space for four adults.

The all new Volvo C70 is short and low but relatively wide. Its proportions and design were chosen to give the car a powerful profile. In order to ensure harmonious lines both with and without the roof, Volvo’s designers decided to first draw the all new Volvo C70 as a coupe. Only after they were satisfied with the result did they make the necessary adjustments to create a convertible out of the finished design.

The car’s haunches flow to the rear, giving a dynamic stance and reinforcing the sensation of a protective collar around the rear seat passengers. The upward sweep is balanced visually by the wave-shaped sill line.

The tail section has an abrupt cut-off. The tail lamps echo the design language of Volvo’s sedan models, but with a slimmer profile to emphasise the C heritage.

The interior is inspired by Scandinavian product design with the emphasis on uncluttered surfaces, honest materials and good function. The C70 also has features such as Volvo’s ultra-slim, visually free-floating centre console, a specially developed upholstery material (Vulcaflex) and interior space that is remarkably generous for this type of car.

The all new Volvo C70 is designed for four adults. The rear has two pronounced, deeply contoured seats.

The retractable hardtop is raised and lowered in about thirty seconds with the help of an electric motor and hydraulics. When lowered, it is fully concealed in the luggage compartment. Thanks to a special load assistance function, the remaining space can nonetheless be utilised very effectively for luggage.

 Interior

Offering the best of both worlds, the all-new Volvo C70 is a modern convertible with classic proportions, four comfortable seats and a three-piece retractable hardtop.

“We wanted to create two cars in one – combining the best of both worlds,” says project manager Patrik Widerstrand. “We have succeeded in creating a car that is both an elegant convertible and a sporty coupe.” The all-new Volvo C70 can be transformed seamlessly from a coupe into a convertible; the retractable hardtop folding away quickly and smoothly into the trunk.

“It’s a very special experience to see half the car open up and swallow the other,” says Fedde Talsma, head of design for the all-new Volvo C70. “One simple press of a button and the transformation takes place automatically in just 30 seconds.” Apart from the flexibility offered by the retractable hardtop it also makes for a quieter, more comfortable coupe. The large rear window glass offers outstanding outward visibility and improves body rigidity.

ROUNDED SHAPES AND A POWERFUL PROFILE

The all-new Volvo C70 is slightly shorter and lower than its predecessor and overall width is slightly wider. Combined with its slightly shorter nose, this gives the car a powerful, athletic stance. The gently rounded corners and minimal front overhang are Volvo design hallmarks.

A strong shoulder is another Volvo design cue, and the C70 carries the tradition in fine form. From the swept headlamps the shoulder line swings up towards the rear, giving the impression that the car is sitting low on its hindquarters. The higher beltline around back reinforces the feeling of a protective collar around those traveling in the backseat. The slope is balanced visually by the wave-shaped sill line.

“Achieving harmonious lines both with and without a roof is not an easy task,” says Talsma. “We opted to first design the all-new Volvo C70 as a coupe. Once we were satisfied with the result, the convertible's lines fell cleanly into place.”

In profile, the trunk line falls away sharply and has the characteristic Volvo rear lights. On the all-new Volvo C70 they have a lower profile than on the sedan models, creating visual width and a powerful stance.

SCANDINAVIAN INFLUENCED INTERIOR

The interior of the all-new Volvo C70 is marked by Volvo’s modern and innovative design features, inspired by Scandinavian tradition with clean surfaces, genuine materials and good functionality. “We have chosen to give the all-new Volvo C70 an elegant, modern feel,” says Talsma. “Inspiration has been drawn more from Scandinavian product design than pure car design.”

The super-thin center stack, introduced in the Volvo S40 sport sedan and V50 sport wagon can also be found in the all-new Volvo C70.

Adding to the all-new C70's individuality, special upholstery has been developed. The standard Vulcaflex interior is a synthetic material with a skin-like surface and a high-tech feel. Full leather upholstery is an option.

COMFORT FOR FOUR ADULTS

The all-new Volvo C70 is designed to accommodate four adults. The two rear seats have comfortably angled backrests and generous width across the supportive cushions. Like all Volvo cars, the front seats are ergonomically shaped. With a push of a button on the backrest, the front seats move quickly forward to facilitate entry to the rear seat. The (standard on driver's side optional for passenger seat) electrically operated seats move forward twice as quickly as the previous C70.

FLEXIBLE, CAREFULLY CONSIDERED DESIGN

In the passenger compartment there are spacious storage areas beside each seat. Several of the storage bins are linked to the car’s central locking system for convenient locking when using the remote control. The locking feature is particularly useful when the car is parked with the top down. Additionally, a completely new system is being launched in the C70: Private Locking. The system allows certain compartments to be locked with the key from the glove compartment when leaving the car with a parking attendant.

As with all Volvos, functionality is very important. In the all-new C70 the trunk is unusually spacious for a convertible of this size. It has a 12.8 cubic-foot capacity with the roof up and 6.0 cubic feet with the top stowed. A divider located inside the trunk makes it easy to assess how much can be loaded with the top down. To assist in loading and unloading with the top down, the entire roof mechanism can be lifted approximately 7.9 inches with the aid of an electric motor and a control button located in the trunk compartment. A ‘ski hatch’ in the backrest of the rear seat also makes it possible to transport long objects inside the car and is locked with the central locking function described above.

Chassis and Safety

Volvo Cars adopts a holistic view of safety that encompasses both Preventive and Protective safety.

Preventive safety is closely linked to the car’s driving properties. The all new Volvo C70 is twice as torsionally rigid as the previous C70 model, thanks to an advanced and reinforced body structure. Combined with a sturdy chassis, torsional rigidity helps give the car consistent, predictable behaviour on the road (see also under “Powertrain and Chassis”).

Volvo Cars has developed various information systems designed to help the driver while on the move. One such system is IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System) which for instance delays incoming phone calls in complex traffic situations that require the driver’s undivided attention.

Protective safety in the all new Volvo C70 is structured around a network consisting of exterior and interior safety systems that interact with one another to reduce the risk of occupant injury in a collision. The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible. The body is therefore built in the form of a metal cage made of different grades of steel, where all the components interact with one another to ensure controlled deformation. Since the all new Volvo C70 does not have a fixed roof, the body has been reinforced in a variety of ways to allow the rest of the car’s structure to absorb a greater proportion of the impact energy.  When a car rolls over, its windscreen frame is subjected to immense force. In the all new Volvo C70, the windscreen pillars are made using hydroforming technology, whereby it is possible to make each pillar in one single piece but with varying thickness and high strength along its entire length. Even the ROPS bars – the metal hoops that come up behind the rear passengers in the event of a roll-over scenario – are particularly sturdily dimensioned and are activated exceptionally quickly. The interior safety systems aim to keep the passengers securely in place and also to reduce the risk of serious injury. In order to provide the most effective protection possible, Volvo Cars has developed a number of in-house systems, such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are fitted as standard in the all new Volvo C70.

The inflatable curtain has been tailored for the convertible and is installed in the door. It deploys upwards. In order to further boost protection in the event of a roll-over scenario, the curtain deflates slowly. Every seat is equipped with a three-point seat belt, belt pre-tensioner and head restraint. The highest possible safety requires that all the car’s occupants always use their seat belts.

Powertrain and chassis

The engines in the all new Volvo C70 are five-cylinder, transversely installed in-line units. A five-cylinder engine gives low vibration and smooth operation. Together with large displacement, the five-cylinder configuration provides high torque across a broad rev band, and thus also swift acceleration and excellent driveability within a wide speed range.

The Volvo C70 T5 is the top model and it features a turbocharged engine mated to either a five-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set up for stable, reassuring driving manners and alert steering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and high ride comfort. Some of these links have the task of providing a certain degree of anti-skid steering effect. A long wheelbase and wide track, together with a very torsionally rigid body, contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners. What is more, chassis height has been substantially lowered front and rear to further benefit directional stability.

Volvo’s advanced DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) stability-enhancing system is fitted as standard. DSTC cuts in and helps stabilise the car if it registers any tendency to skid.

The environment

The all new Volvo C70 is designed and equipped to impact as little as possible on the global environment and to offer a clean and healthy interior climate. Petrol engines with low internal friction, efficient combustion and advanced exhaust filtration technology result in low emissions.

The engines in the Volvo C70 can be optionally specified with a catalytic radiator coating known as PremAir®. This system converts harmful ground-level ozone into pure oxygen as the car drives. Its benefits are greatest in dense city traffic and in strong sunlight. Volvo’s IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) effectively reduces the amount of particles, pollen, gases and certain unpleasant odours in the air entering the cabin. All the textiles and leather upholsteries are certified according to ÖKO-TEX 100, an international standard that ensures that the interior trim is free from allergy-producing and hazardous substances.
