The Volvo V90 returns after nearly two decades

Discontinued in 1998 after only two years on the market, the V90 returned as Volvo’s flagship wagon in 2016. The new V90 is built on Volvo’s new Scaleable Production Architecture platform, which already underpins the XC90 SUV and the S90. As a result, the wagon also uses the same drivetrains as the S90, which in turn borrowed them from the XC90.

Likewise, the V90 features the same design language as the sedan and gets a similar interior, which makes it one of the most luxurious grocery getters on the market. Of course, the wagon received a redesigned rear end and a more practical interior with enhanced luggage space, but the sedan’s premium features and state-of-the-art technology are still there.

More good news comes from the availability department, as Volvo confirmed that the V90 will be sold in the United States too. Unveiled on North American soil at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, the V90 became Volvo’s first wagon in the U.S. in many years. Although the brand still offers the V60 on these shores, the V90 comes in Cross Country spec with a more rugged,

crossover

like appearance.

Aston Martin, Ford, and Rolls-Royce Skipping 2016 Paris Auto Show

Increasing costs and new marketing trends makes auto shows less appealing to automakers

Auto shows such as those in Detroit, Paris, Frankfurt, and Geneva usually gather round tens of manufacturers that are looking to showcase their latest vehicles and products. However, while auto shows were also a place where companies used to sell cars back in the day, nowadays large traffic at vehicle stands doesn’t necessarily translate into sales. Consumers spend more time looking at cars on their computers and smartphones, and many would rather attend all sorts of programs that allow them to drive the vehicles they want to purchase. This, paired with the fact that auto show booths cost millions of dollars to set up, have prompted some manufacturers to skip this year’s Paris Motor Show.

According to Automotive News, no fewer than four major companies have declined to join the event. For instance, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer said that while new cars and technology benefit from the attention they get at auto shows, sometimes there are "better ways of doing it than just always spending money on show after show after show." Ford and Rolls-Royce also seem to agree, as both companies have decided to skip the 2016 Paris Motor Show, which will likely be the year’s largest car show in terms of attendance. Volvo is yet another brand that won’t be in Paris, but the Swedish manufacturer has announced its plans to skip most shows and market its products more directly to buyers a couple of years ago.

Even automakers that will set camp in Paris are revising their strategies. "The world is continuously changing," a Lamborghini spokesman told the aforementioned outlet, adding that the supercar company "intends to anticipate these changes."

Volvo first introduced the S90 name in 1996, when it renamed the 960 for certain markets. With Volvo discontinuing the 900 Series midsize in 1998, the 2014 Volvo S80 we know of today rolled in as the replacement for the S90. The S90 also marked the end of an era for Volvo, being the last rear-wheel-drive car wearing the Swedish company’s badge. The S80 continued the S90’s luxurious legacy over the course of two generations. The first series lived between 1998 and 2006, while the second-gen model will be discontinued after nearly a decade on the market. With 2016 just around the corner, Volvo revived the S90 nameplate for a redesigned, more upscale replacement of its range-topping sedan.

Besides taking duties from the S80, the S90 is also set to revolutionize the midsize luxury segment, much like the second-generation XC90 did in the SUV market. The sedan received the hauler’s design language, along with an interior packed with the latest technology and luxury items developed by the Swedes. The overhauled sedan will hit dealerships in the second half of 2016 with an array of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, as well as a hybrid drivetrain. Find our more about it below.

Volvo’s soft-roader gets a new face

Volvo has released a handful of teaser images of its refreshed V40 Cross Country ahead of the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The updated V40, slotted for the 2017 model year, gets a new face, several interior improvements, upgraded in-dash technology, and new wheel and color options.

Introduced for the 2013 model year along side the standard V40, the current V40 Cross Country adds a higher level of versatility to Volvo’s five-passenger hatchback thanks to more ground clearance, dark body cladding, and of course,Volvo’s AWD system. Designed as a “softroader,” the V40 Cross Country is best suited for foul weather situations that include ice and snow, rather than rocks and deep mud. Still, the car can tackle dirt or gravel roads with more authority than the standard V40 hatch.

“The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in Europe and the second-most popular Volvo model globally, making it a very important car for the company,” said Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service at Volvo. “With the updates for model year 2017 we make this already very successful model even more attractive to customers in the segment.”

Sadly Volvo has yet to confirm the suspicions of the V40 platform coming to the U.S. in 2017, though it’s still a possibility. We may learn more when Volvo hosts the V40’s official debut at Geneva. Offering the model in the State would give Volvo a chance to compete against the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Audi Q3. The luxury compact crossover segment is certainly growing, so the market viability is definitely there.

Facelift brings Thor’s Hammer headlamps to Volvo’s smallest wagon

The Volvo V40 came to be in 1995, as a wagon version of the then-new S40, which replaced the 440/460 series. The name was retired in 2004, when the second-generation wagon was renamed V50, but it returned in 2012. The new V40, however, was developed as a hatchback instead of a full-fledged wagon, and was aimed at the likes of the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. Volvo also launched a Cross Country version with protective body panels, bigger wheels, and an increased ride height for crossover enthusiasts. Four years have passed since the modern, hatchback V40 arrived in dealerships and Volvo has prepared an updated iteration for the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

The update is far from comprehensive, but it adds new headlamps and front grille, new exterior colors, and new upholstery options for the interior. It also comes with improved apps and technology and a more efficient diesel powertrain.

“The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in Europe and the second-most popular Volvo model globally, making it a very important car for the company. With the updates for model year 2017 we make this already very successful model even more attractive to customers in the segment,” said Bjorn Annwall, Volvo’s senior vice president.

As you may already know, the V40 is not yet available in the U.S. However, word has it that the hatch might cross the pond to North America around 2018, when the next-gen version arrives. Until that happens, let’s have a closer look at the model set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Volvo Cars Unveils Concept 26 In Los Angeles

Self-driving cars are right around the corner. There are numerous autonomous concepts and prototypes on the roads, fielded by Google, Volvo, Mercedes and others, and their success suggests that we might not be far from having them available to the public. This is going to require a significant shift in interior design, and Volvo has done some exploration into this idea with the Concept 26.

Unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, Concept 26 is a design study that focuses on the interior, rather than the exterior. Taking the idea of an autonomous luxury car, Volvo considers ways that the interior can be reconfigured and re-thought to accommodate drivers who aren’t necessarily driving all the time. It’s got three driving modes: Drive, Create, and Relax. Concept 26 is an interior designed for a car that is autonomous during the daily commute, but actively driven the rest of the time.

2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country

Having expanded the V60 range to include a Cross Country model in 2014, Volvo has now launched a similar package for the S60. Yes, that’s not a spelling error, the compact sedan now has a crossover version of its own, with all of the bits and pieces that made the V60 Cross Country one of the greatest wagon-based crossover, minus the massive storage area in the rear. Introduced at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and scheduled to go on sale later in the year, the S60 Cross Country gives Volvo bragging rights as the only manufacturer to sell a crossover-like sedan. Sure, the S60 isn’t the first of its kind, but both the Legacy-based Subaru Outback Sedan and the AMC Eagle are long gone.

More importantly, Volvo’s perched sedan is the first such configuration to come in a luxury package and I can’t help wonder whether the S60 Cross Country will influence other compact sedans to don on a crossover suit in the near future. Meanwhile, Volvo’s "unique expression of adventure and all-road readiness" rides on its own globally as far as body styling goes. Read on for the full run-down.

Although Volvo is often referred to as the automaker producing the safest vehicles in the industry, the Swedish manufacturer is also known for the massive amount of luxury and technology it puts into its cars and SUVs. Sure, Volvo still lags behind German companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi in terms of sales, but the Chinese-owned brand’s lineup is as lush as it gets, with the brand-new 2016 XC90 paving a new path in terms of exuberance. While it may take a couple of years for the entire Volvo lineup to align to the trend set by the SUV, the Swedes are trying to keep up with the Germans by bringing more Inscription models into dealerships. At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Volvo unveiled the S60 Inscription, basically the range-topping version of its compact sedan.

Introduced in early 2014, the Inscription trim is essentially a package that adds several unique features inside and out, including soft leather upholstery, bespoke paints, new wheels, and custom interior amenities with embroidered logos. The S60 is the latest to receive the Inscription trim, which will arguably enable the sedan to fare better against similar competitors from Germany and the United States as well.

Updated 05/21/2015: Volvo announced prices for its entire 2016 model year lineup, including its new addition: the S60 Inscription. The model will be offered in two versions, with prices starting from $38,700.

2015 Volvo V60 Twin Engine Special Edition

Volvo is quite busy these days. From working to revamp its lineup by 2018 and shifting its focus from EVs to plug-in hybrids, the Swedish automaker is elbows deep into reinventing itself. Heck, Volvo even said it wants to start selling cars online and limit its auto show attendance dramatically. But until the company’s marketing turns into a completely digital experience, the Swedes are still alive and kicking at auto shows the world over. Having showcased the unusual S60 Cross Country at the Detroit Auto Show, Volvo joined the Geneva Motor Show to introduce a brand-new hybrid plug-in.

Named the V60 D5 Twin Engine (Volvo talk for hybrid), the new wagon is essentially a less-powerful version of the already familiar V60 diesel-hybrid. In short, the Swedish are broadening their Twin Engine product range, a trend that’s likely to expand. Although showcased as a special edition with limited availability, the V60 D5 Twin Engine will also receive a regular version to be sold alongside the D6 hybrid.

2015 Detroit Auto Show: Worst in Show

The 2015 automotive year is off to a great start thanks to the Detroit Auto Show. Hosting no less than 27 production debuts, Detroit showcased some of the most exciting vehicles to hit the market from 2015 through 2017. Ford stole the show with three brand-new performance cars, including the 2017 GT, the 2016 Shelby GT350R, and the 2017 F-150 Raptor, while Acura drew massive crowds to its stand with the 2016 NSX. The truck segment welcomed three more additions in the form of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD, the 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel, and the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, while Chevrolet brought an electric lineup consisting of the second-generation 2016 Volt and the 2015 Bolt EV Concept. However, the 2015 Detroit Auto Show wasn’t all about cheers and chants. The Cobo Center floor had its fair share of dullness, and that’s exactly what I’m going to talk about below.

Why? Well, first of all, let’s say that it wouldn’t be fair to highlight only the good stuff. Secondly, the vehicles I’m about to review below reveal new brand strategies as well as existing policies that may or may not be healthy for the manufacturers in question. 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country

The Volvo S60 has been with us in its current state since the 2011 model year, but it wasn’t until the 2015 model that its V60 sports wagon cousin finally joined it in North America. When we reviewed the V60, we praised it for its handsome, understated styling, pokey range of engines, optional all-wheel-drive, and for the simple fact that it’s a Volvo wagon in a SUV-mad world. Now Volvo has announced it will be expanding the V60 range with the addition of the V60 Cross Country — a slightly more rugged crossover take on the V60 with an outdoorsy bend.

It’s the spiritual descendant of the V70 Cross Country released way back in 1997 and was the first of the off-road wagon breed that now includes the Audi allroad and Subaru Forrester. The AMC Eagle predated all of them by about 17 years, but we’ll set that aside for now. It also joins the XC60, XC70 and XC90 as the fourth Cross Country model in Volvo’s current lineup.

Updated 11/18/2014: Volvo announced prices for the all new V60 Cross Country which will arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2015. Prices will start from $41,000 for the V60 Cross Country version equipped with the five-cylinder engine and the All Wheel Drive system.

2013 Volvo V60 Racing Wagon

It was the subject of some teaser images before it made its debut at the Sao Paulo Auto Show, but now that Volvo has revealed the V60 Racing race car, we finally got a good look at what all the fuss was about.

Designed and built as a racing-tuned version of the V60 wagon, the V60 Racing certainly looks the part of a full-fledged race car, thanks to a throwback paint scheme that resembles the old Volvo 850 station wagon from the British Touring Car Championship back in the mid 90’s.

But make no mistake, Volvo built the V60 Racing to be an actual race car, not to just look like one. Proof of that lies in the interior where the Swedish automaker installed a number of racing components, including bucket seats, aluminum race pedals, a sports steering wheel, and strut bars.

On top of that, the V60 Racing Wagon actually carries a popping 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TS engine that produces 250 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Add a new set of 18" wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires and this V60 Racing Wagon is certainly ready for some racing action.
