Volvo XC30 to Arrive in 2012

Volvo XC30 to Arrive in 2012

Two years ago, we began hearing rumors about Volvo creating a soft-roader with the inner workings of the Volvo C30 and the styling of the Volvo XC60. After being in the pipeline for so long, those rumors were finally confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show by Volvo’s President for Overseas Corporate Strategy, Lex Kerssemakers. He says, "There will be some further expansion of the XC range in the near future."

Generally speaking, society is becoming more environmentally and economically conscious. The trends that we have seen with cars such as the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 are that of a market wanting more for less. The photo shown here is a rendering of what the Volvo XC 30 might eventually look like. Starting off as a 3-door and possibly moving to a 5-door, this compact crossover shows us that the days of those big, heavy SUVs - along with their ridiculous gas mileage - just might be a thing of the past.

Video: Volvo teases ’naughty’ cars headed for the Geneva Motor Show

All these years, Volvo has never been one to think outside the box when it comes to car design because let’s face it, their cars haven’t exactly been the eye-popping type.

But recently, the Swedish brand has been surprising a lot of auto scribes for being just that – thinking outside the box. And just so to prove that they don’t have a as boxy a personality as people think, they’re teasing us with a ‘naughty’ version of one of their cars - possibly a sportier S60 sedan - which they’re bringing to the Geneva Motor Show next week.

Rarely do we see automakers subscribe by the adage, ‘perception isn’t always reality’, but it looks as if Volvo may be jumping on the chance to prove to people that they’ve also taken their designs to the streamlined – or in their own words, ‘naughty’ – level.

2009 Volvo XC60

2009 Volvo XC60

Volvo revealed today the first official images and informations about the all-new 2009 XC60 that will make its world debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show. Sales of the car will start in Europe during the second half of 2008, while sales in North America will get under way in early 2009.

The new XC60 is being launched with a choice of three engines: the turbocharged T6 which produces 285 hp, and two variants of the D5 turbodiesel, producing 185 and 163 hp respectively. All Wheel Drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. In 2009 Volvo will add a new 2.4-litre version powered by a Euro 5 diesel engine producing 163 hp and with a CO2 rating of around 170 g/km.

A variety of intelligent safety systems are another important part of the XC60 model’s special character. The big news is City Safety - a unique feature that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and traffic tailbacks. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.
