Although wagons are a hit in Europe, the same can’t be said for the U.S. market. The sales of wagons in the U.S. dropped so low in the last decade that automakers pulled the plug on them and decided to focus on SUVs of different sizes.
However, things seem to be changing for good and many carmakers have started putting in effort to make these haulers look a lot more desirable. Volvo is on the cusp of refreshing its complete 90 series, and the latest vehicle to get an overhaul is the V90 Cross Country. The changes are limited and it is just a mid-cycle refresh to boost the sales until the next-gen wagon hits the floors. Will it make an impact, though?

Even though they are arguably the most practical vehicles you can buy, wagons were never really considered to be an enthusiast’s first choice. Things are so bad in the States that automakers started retracting their wagons from here and focused on the European markets instead, where they were greeted with open arms. However, times are changing now. Volvo has been renovating the 90 series, and now it’s the V90’s turn. The current V90 is already about three years old and it has started to look dated (blame the Cross Country models to an extent for this). The new V90 does not look radically different from the current model, but the automaker did hide the subtle changes it brings in on the bumpers and fog lamps.

The BMW X7 arrives just in time to compete with the XC90, so it’s reasonable to compare to the two to determine which of these two SUVs has the edge over the other.
2019 Volvo V60 Cross Country
The V60 Cross Country is the raised version of the company’s familiar V60 wagon. Redesigned in 2018, the V60 Cross Country bridges the gap between the V60 and the XC60. It’s not as big as the latter, but it adds some off-road capability on top of the V60’s wagon-style utility.
Unveiled only a few months after the S60 sedan and V60 wagon, the V60 Cross Country comes to the U.S. to take on the Audi A4 Allroad. Sure, it will be sold in Europe as well, but wagons are a much bigger deal in North America where most of them have been replaced by crossovers. It will be an interesting battle as the V60 is now more upscale than ever and its tech package is on par, or even above in some departments, with what the Germans have to offer. Pricing for the Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered is Far From What You’d Expect
The U.S.-built Volvo S60 was launched last week, and the automaker has already announced that the top-of-the-line hybrid version, the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered, will be available from June 28. But, there’s a catch – only 20 of these will be available, and only by subscription through Care by Volvo. Customers who have enrolled in Care by Volvo can make a monthly payment of $1100, before taxes and registration fees, for the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered. These monthly payments cover insurance, service, and maintenance of the car.

After years of struggle to make a stand in the premium market, the S60 finally has a shot against the leading nameplates in this niche: the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4. We’ve already compared the S60 to the Merc, so now it’s time to pit it against the 3 Series, the vehicle that has set the benchmark in this segment for many years.
Purchased by Geely in 2009, Volvo was subject to a makeover in recent years that saw most of its important models redesigned from the ground up and all engines that weren’t four-cylinders discontinued. Sure, the technology hidden under the body of the new S60 is shared among all new Volvo cars based on the SPA platform, but that does not make it any less intriguing.

One More Teaser for the Volvo S60 Before Tomorrow’s Big Debut
The new-generation Volvo S60 is set to debut tomorrow, June 20, and the Swedish automaker released a teaser photo to get things hot for another 24 hours. The compact sedan will be unveiled in Charleston, South Carolina, where Volvo will open its first-ever U.S. manufacturing plant. The teaser shows an S60 hidden under a thin cover, but it doesn’t reveal much.
Are Volvos Safe? This Video Says Yes Sir!
A Reddit user posted a video of what appears to be a late-2000s Volvo XC70 getting into a head-on collision with a massive truck. Usually, this is the kind of video that makes you cringe, knowing the occupants of the vehicle were severely injured, but they were driving a Volvo. If you ever questioned whether or not Volvo made safe cars, well this is a real-world crash test that answers with a definite YES.
There isn’t a lot of information to go by, but we know this is an older XC70 that didn’t include things like lane-keep assist or the like. Clearly, the Volvo driver was at fault. Prior to the crazy accident, the vehicle slowly drifts out of its lane and right into the path of that big truck. It doesn’t even appear as if the drive in the Volvo hit his brakes, so he was probably distracted with more important things – you know, a text message, browsing facebook, or watching porn.
The car behind him was the lucky one with a dash cam and was actually able to stop before making things worse, but what happens after that is sheer lunacy. For a collision that would likely result in injury for most cars on the road, this driver seems more angry than anything, throwing a big piece of the dash, which was obviously karma’s way of slapping him in the face, out of the car. I’m sure there were a few naughty words said in the process and, according to later posts, the driver walked away uninjured.
Regardless of what caused the accident, it goes to show one thing – Volvos are pretty damn safe. I’m sure the driver was sore the next day, and he probably got whacked in the face by that piece of dash trim pretty good. But, considering what the outcome could have been, I’m pretty sure he should be writing Volvo one hell of a thank you note – their design philosophy probably just save his life, or at the very least, saved him from serious injury.
