1961 - 1972 Volvo P1800

1961 - 1972 Volvo P1800

We take a good look at the sports car made famous by Roger Moore in The Saint

Volvo and sportiness didn’t exactly go hand in hand 50 years ago, although one car with nippy ambitions stood out from the Swedish carmaker’s lineup. That car was the P1800, which came to change Volvo’s fortunes in the sports car arena after the resoundingly unsuccessful, fiberglass-bodied P1900. Volvo churned out 39,414 P1800s between 1961 and 1972, in three derivatives: P1800 S, 1800 S - S stood for Sverige or Sweden, and 1800 E - E stood for einspritzung, which means fuel injection in German.

These days, you can get a P1800 for as much as €49,500 (around $58,000) on used car websites such as Classic Driver.

2016 Volvo V60 Polestar

2016 Volvo V60 Polestar

In 2014, Polestar introduced a new version of its souped-up V60, launching on four continents in more than seven markets, including the U.S. For 2016, only a few months after Volvo purchased the Polestar brand, the performance-oriented V60 returns to North America as limited-edition model.

According to a recent announcement by Volvo Cars of North America, only 265 V60 and S60 vehicles will be imported to the U.S. for the 2016 model year, 60 percent of which will be V60s. That’s around 160 wagons, which means U.S. allocation will sell out quickly, turning the V60 Polestar into an exclusive rig on these shores.

The V60 Polestar remains mostly unchanged for the 2016 model year, featuring the same drivetrain and long list of standard equipment, as well as over 70 alterations and upgrades Polestar made to the standard V60.

"This is a performance vehicle that combines Polestar’s racing experience with Volvo Cars’ exceptional ability to build everyday cars. It is a rare combination that is hard for others to duplicate successfully," said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America.

2015 Volvo V40 Carbon

2015 Volvo V40 Carbon

When talking about Volvo cars, performance isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Rather, Volvos are better known for their safety and excellent fuel economy. However, those looking to buy a car that’s a bit quicker than what Volvo usually has to offer can take it to Polestar, the brand’s performance division. Mostly known for delivering products similar to BMW’s M Performance and Mercedes’ AMG, Polestar has just introduced the "Performance Optimisation" package, which focuses on exclusive visual updates and mild performance enhancements. The first Volvo to receive the new package is the V40 hatchback.

Dubbed V40 Carbon, the five-door hatch features a bespoke exterior and interior and comes with a choice of two engines, gasoline and diesel. The good news is that both powerplants crank out more horsepower than their standard siblings, essentially bridging the gap between the regular V40 and the full-fledged Polestar edition.

More good news comes from the fact that the Swedes are planning to optimize other Drive-E engines as well later in 2015, meaning more vehicles are set to receive Polestar’s new package. Meanwhile, let’s have a closer look at the V40 Carbon below.

2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design

2016 Volvo XC90 R-Design

Volvo turned a lot of heads in August 2014 when it revealed the new XC90. Who knew the Swedish automaker — known more for safe, boxy cars — had the creative juices to develop a luxury SUV that has garnered a lot of praise. Not long after the debut of the XC90, Volvo followed that up with the debut of the XC90 R-Design.

The XC90 R-Design is an XC90 dressed up in a nice tuxedo. Ok, the bowtie might be a little too much but you get the point. It has a bagful of extra options for the SUV’s exterior, interior, and wheels. There are just the right amount of modifications to get noticed without going overboard.

The Volvo XC90 R-Design should begin production in May 2015 with deliveries to follow sometime in the latter part of the year.

Updated 01/23/2015: We’ve added a series of new images from the car’s official debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Check the new images in the "Pictures" tab.

2014 Volvo S60 Polestar

2014 Volvo S60 Polestar

After first unveiling the concept version at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Volvo S60 Polestar has finally made it to production. However, before you get too excited, you have to know that the new S60 Polestar will initially only be offered in the Australian market. Depending on the Australian reaction to the new model, Volvo will decide if other market will also get it or not.

When it comes to the exterior look, the production version remains pretty faithful to the concept, but unfortunately the concept’s amazing output didn’t make it to production. So, if you were hopping to see the same turbocharged, in-line six-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 508 horsepower we have to tell you that you are going to be a little bit disappointed.

Even more bad news comes with the announcement that the S60 Polestar will be limited to only 100 units, so not even the Aussie market will get much of an opportunity to really enjoy it.

Updated 03/31/2014: Volvo unveiled a new video showing the new S60 Polestar in action in Arctic conditions. Behind the wheel you will see Scott McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren. Enjoy!

2013 Volvo V40 Polestar

2013 Volvo V40 Polestar

When Volvo dropped the official details on the 2013 S60 Polestar concept, they also announced that a production version would arrive, but only in a limited edition. This decision was made after an American customer bought the concept for an impressive $300,000. Lucky for everyone else, the production version won’t be as expensive as that. Volvo has also promised that a V40 Polestar version will arrive by the end of 2012 and will be priced at only $30K.

The V40 Polestar will respond to the likes of the BMW M135i and the Audi S3. If the first rumors are true, it will have ’at least’ 10 per cent more power than a standard T5. A little calculating will show that the future V40 Polestar will easily be able to produce 280 HP, but don’t be surprised if it passes the 300 HP mark. The model will be offered with an all-wheel-drive system and Polestar should be able to give it an impressive exterior look.

2012 Volvo C70 Inscription

The 2011 SEMA Auto Show is over so now it’s time to focus on the next motor show of the month: the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show starting November 16th. Just a few days ago, Subaru announced the BRZ STI Concept’s scheduled appearance in California, and now Volvo has announced a special edition C70. Called the C70 Inscription, this new edition will be offered worldwide and will be limited to 2,000 units a year.

The new C70 Inscription will be offered in only three exterior colors: Black Stone (Solid), Black Sapphire (Metallic), and Ice White (Solid). It will be distinguished by 18-inch wheels painted in black with polished spokes and outer perimeter, a high-gloss paint on the grille, and LED Daytime Running Lights.

For the interior, the model will add an exclusive leather-covered dashboard with contrasting stitching and Sovereign Hide upholstery in Off Black or Calcite with the same contrasting stitching as on dashboard, handbrake lever, and carpets. A sporty feeling will be added with a new set of aluminum pedals, a steering wheel and gear shift knob with aluminum inlays. Because this is a special edition, it will also feature "Inscription" logos on the front headrests, carpets, and handbrake lever.

UPDATE 12/15/11: Volvo has officially released the pricing details for the C70 Inscription package. If you’re interested in getting one, you’re going to need to shell out $3,900 for the opportunity to have one put into your C70. 2010 Volvo C30 R-Design

2010 Volvo C30 R-Design

After the Swedish automaker Volvo unveiled the 2010 C30, the safety conscious car builder has also taken the wraps off of the new C30 R-Design, an iteration of the Volvo hatchback intended for those consumers who are looking for a much sportier ride, and they will be able to get their first look at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show before the car goes on sale early in 2010.

When designing the new C30 R-Design, Volvo’s engineers paid special attention to the C30’s structure and steering hidden underneath the hot hatch’s five spoke Cratus wheels. The driver inputs are now much more precise thanks to the installation of stiffer bushings and a 10% quicker steering rack ratio. The C30 R-Design has a firmer ride thanks to 30% stiffer springs in the suspension to promote the car’s poise for enthusiastic driving. The new mono tube shock absorbers have been stiffened as well in order to match the new coils and were chosen for their ability to build up pressure much more quickly. Even the car’s sway bars have been stiffened in order to reduce any tendency for the C30 to lean into corners.

The new sport chassis has made the C30 R-Design a better balanced and much more agile car. Driving feel is more distinct and feedback from the wheels are much more precise, promoting a more engaging experience when behind the wheel.

The sporty C50 T5 R-Design starts at just $26,950.

Press release after the jump.
