Even though they are arguably the most practical vehicles you can buy, wagons were never really considered to be an enthusiast’s first choice. Things are so bad in the States that automakers started retracting their wagons from here and focused on the European markets instead, where they were greeted with open arms. However, times are changing now. Volvo has been renovating the 90 series, and now it’s the V90’s turn. The current V90 is already about three years old and it has started to look dated (blame the Cross Country models to an extent for this). The new V90 does not look radically different from the current model, but the automaker did hide the subtle changes it brings in on the bumpers and fog lamps.

Wagons are the most practical vehicles one can buy today. They amalgamate the practicality of an SUV and the ride and handling of a sedan. Although they lacked the star-power and the glamorous looks until five years back, things have changed. A lot of mainstream automakers have started making these long vehicles look sexy. One such company that deserves credit for making a wagon look so desirable is Volvo. The Scandinavian company has gone a step ahead by mixing a crossover and a wagon into one beautiful product called the Volvo V60 Cross Country.

High-riding vehicles, like crossovers and SUVs are at the height of popularity right now, but they’re not the only way to go if you want practicality and some off-road capability. Crossover style raised wagons are a great alternative and while they can still drive you over a rough field or rutted road with ease, they’re better to drive on road and actually pretty stylish.
They are essentially the wagon versions of different cars which have gained extra ride height and plastic cladding on the outside to protect them from scratches in their most vulnerable points. These vehicles usually have standard all-wheel drive and are usually a higher trim level, so they are not cheap (compared to the vehicle they’re based on) but they also come with a lot of equipment.

2019 Volvo V60 Cross Country
The V60 Cross Country is the raised version of the company’s familiar V60 wagon. Redesigned in 2018, the V60 Cross Country bridges the gap between the V60 and the XC60. It’s not as big as the latter, but it adds some off-road capability on top of the V60’s wagon-style utility.
Unveiled only a few months after the S60 sedan and V60 wagon, the V60 Cross Country comes to the U.S. to take on the Audi A4 Allroad. Sure, it will be sold in Europe as well, but wagons are a much bigger deal in North America where most of them have been replaced by crossovers. It will be an interesting battle as the V60 is now more upscale than ever and its tech package is on par, or even above in some departments, with what the Germans have to offer. 2019 Volvo V60 R-Design
Volvo brings the R-Design treatment to its latest V60 Wagon. It will be the top-tier trim for the V60, and it will enhance the car’s performance as well. A sportier exterior look is part of the deal, and it’s available for all the engines in the lineup.
The R-Design, where "R" stands for "Refined," is Volvo’s range-topping performance trim, with the first Volvo that benefitted from this treatment dating back 23 years. It comes as no surprise that the V60 will be available, for the 2019 model year, with the R-Design package that adds improved suspension to make sense of the sporty, yet conservative, exterior. The base price for the Volvo V60 R is $46,558.
Volvo just recently introduced the V60 Estate, and it was a huge departure over the outgoing model. It featured a sportier, more attractive design to go with an interior that was suitable to actually compete with the likes of Audi and BMW. That’s something the old model, with its heavily outdated interior, just couldn’t do. There’s no denying that Volvo put a lot of work into revamping the V60, but a lot of that work was borrowed from the larger S90, so it’s not exactly new DNA. Be that as it may, Volvo believes the new V60 is worthy of a price tag that is more than $10,000 higher than that of the outgoing model – now that’s one hell of a price hike.
The truth is, Volkswagen has only released pricing for the U.K., where it will carry a window sticker that reads £31,810 or £7,665 more than the outgoing model. Do the currency conversion (Accurate as of May 18, 2018), and that computes to $42,890 or $10,334 more expensive. Volvo claims that the higher pricing is due to the step up in engineering, quality, and equipment. The equipment we can certainly agree on as the last model had an infotainment screen that looked like it was borrowed from 2008, to be honest.
In the end, though, that Volvo’s excuse for such a massive price hike only goes so far. Sure, it’s nicer, more attractive, and more technologically advanced, but the real reason is that it finally brings the pricing of the V60 inline with the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Wagon. Volvo insists it will offer more equipment for the money, though, so maybe it won’t be so bad. Either way, a big selling point for the old V60 was that it was on the high side of affordable and now it officially moves into luxury pricing territory.
Sure, maybe it fits in the luxury category better. And, it does fit there better, but Volvo could have done much better to keep the pricing in a lower bracket compared to the competition. Either way, when it comes to the states, it’ll probably carry a price tag very similar to the A4 Allroad and the 3 Series Sport Wagon, its two main competitors in this market.
Volvo finally revamped the V60 – the oldest model in its lineup – in 2018 in an attempt to give Audi and BMW a real competitor in the compact wagon segment. And, it did so by borrowing a lot of DNA from the new V90 – it’s larger brother. It becomes the most advanced vehicle in its class, putting the A4 Avant and C-Class Wagon to shame in an all-new way. It is offered with gasoline and hybrid drivetrains that are both fuel efficient, and it comes with some of the best safety features on the planet. After several years with slow sales and dated products, Volvo began to revive its vehicle lineup with a new architecture and a fresh design language. It started things off with the XC90 in 2014, but several models followed suit until 2017. The V60 remained the oldest car in the lineup to still feature the old design, but this just changed ahead of the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, as Volvo unveiled a new compact station wagon. After struggling to compete against similar offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi for nearly eight years, the V60 finally has what it takes to climb higher in the compact premium segment.
Essentially a shrunken V90 on the outside, the V60 boasts the same tech and safety packages as the larger Volvo models. This makes it the most advanced vehicle in its class, despite both the Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Wagon still being relatively new. It also gained most of the V90’s drivetrain lineup, which includes both gasoline and diesel mills, as well as a hybrid. Shots of the Volvo V60 Have Leaked Ahead of Geneva Debut
Unless someone had far too much time on his hands and decided to go on a Photoshop binge, what you’re looking at here appears to be the new Volvo V60. The Swedish automaker’s next-generation wagon is scheduled to hit the auto show scene in Geneva next month, but if these photos are accurate, we’re getting a good look at the wagon’s side and rear sections. Color me impressed. The new V60 looks like the kind of wagon you’d want people to see you driving.
2018 Volvo S60 & V60 Polestar Champion Edition
Volvo took a title win in the FIA World Touring Car Championship this year thanks to the efforts of Cyan Racing and its S60 Polestar TC1 racer. Leading the charge was driver Thed Bjork, who also managed to grab the Driver’s Championship, making him the first Swede to “win a motor racing world title” according to Volvo. In recognition of that, the brand is releasing upgraded iterations of the S60 sedan and V60 wagon dubbed the Polestar Performance World Champion Edition.

2018 Volvo S60 and V60 Get Carbon Fiber Enhancements From Polestar
Of the models in Volvo’s automotive lineup, the S60 and V60 are the two that have yet to adopt the Swedish automaker’s design language. Don’t worry though because that’s coming in the next few years. In the meantime, the two models are getting a nice treat for the 2018MY, all thanks to some new aerodynamic accessories provided by Polestar.
The kit itself covers plenty of real estate on both the S60 and V60 and was designed to help enhance the sedan and wagon’s performance and handling credentials. It covers upgrades on both the exterior and interior of the two models, with the exterior of each model promised to receive improvements in downforce by as much as 30 percent. There are no power upgrades, though, so don’t expect anything on that front. Still, there’s plenty of new bits and pieces to get excited about, especially for those who are looking into either the S60 or the V60 as their new automotive purchase. Best hurry though in making up your mind because Volvo is limiting production of the Polestar aerodynamic package to just 1,500 units. Should you decide to hold off until the next-generation models for both the S60 and V60 arrive, you’re going to have to wait at least another year for both cars to adopt Volvo’s current design looks. Either way, it’s not a bad idea to go in either direction.
