CFMoto has been making waves worldwide with its likable and modern motorcycles that lock horns with popular Japanese and European offerings. With its ICE lineup sorted, the Chinese company has now shifted focus to EVs and has taken the wraps off its first electric motorcycle, the Papio Nova. Taking it slow, the Nova is a mini bike rather than a full-sized product but packs enough firepower to cross swords with the Honda Grom.

The race for “exclusive” designs has resulted in some obnoxious e-motorcycles off late, but the Papio Nova is a pleasant exception. The Nova looks like a down-sized streetfighter courtesy of the edgy lights and aggressive body panels. It won’t necessarily come across as an EV at a quick glance, but the battery-motor compartment gives it away eventually. Meanwhile, in typical CFMoto fashion, the EV flaunts funky color options.

At its heart, the Papio Nova houses two 2.2kWh lithium batteries which are good enough to travel 150km (93 miles) at city speeds. The batteries pair up with a belt-driven 12.5kW motor boasting a claimed 251Nm. While this is miles above the Grom's torque output, CFMoto is yet to confirm whether it’s at the wheel or motor. Simultaneously, the EV boasts upside-down forks, monoshock, and 12-inch wheels clamped by single disc brakes at both ends, just like the petrol-powered Papio. Interestingly, the front brake has a Brembo caliper while the ABS comes via Bosch, which are quite premium components.

Features include all the necessities like a digital instrument cluster, ABS, USB port, and all-LED lighting alongside five ride modes and app connectivity. As you'd expect, the Papio Nova is super accessible too, with its 770mm seat height and 124kg (273 pounds) weight. Riders will also appreciate the 170mm ground clearance.

CFMoto debuted the Papio Nova as a 2023 model at the 2022 EICMA. So, the full specs and prices will break cover next year, and we expect an American debut to follow suit. If priced competitively (like the $2,999 Papio), the Nova will surely be a great prospect in the electric mini bike space. Once on sale, the EV will lock horns with the Tromox Ukko S and the slated-for-2023 Super73 C1X.
