High output, Rechargeable LED flashlight for your zombie apocalypse toolbox

Today we are talking about my favorite portable light source, the Fenix HL60R headlamp. It is powerful, light, rechargeable, pretty, practical, essential and so-so affordable but still the best flashlight you will ever own.

Why LED head mount ?

Light sources come in many shapes and prices but I believe headlamps are the only way to go for modern mechanics. Back when flashlights were heavy battery powered bulbs, there was no other choices than carrying them by hand, but now that LED bulb are so powerful and minuscule, there are no downsides of wearing them on your head. Furthermore, who would not want their light source to follow their head movements. Unless you are the Fonz’ and can’t afford to have your hair style encumbered... go head mount!

I already own a a cheapo headlamp, I am not convinced

The led flashlights format has been very popular the past few years, with many option within the $10-20 dollar range, available pretty much everywhere, but let’s be honest they are just ok. If you are serious about your tools and want to spend a few extra buck to save yourself a lot of headaches, dig deeper and you will find some fantastic products to solve your light problems. Forget your $9.99 piece of junk and see what high quality is all about.

So how much is this fantastic flashlight going to cost?

Lucky for us, headlamps with professional build quality and performance are now available for well under $100. I am talking about 1000 lumens LED headlamps from top manufacturers, offering waterproof aluminum housing with removable and USB rechargeable 3400mAh Li-ion battery. Consequently these are great gifts for anyone valuing their tools: dad, husband, boyfriend ... And it is so very geeky.

LED Headlamp pro/cons

Honestly I don’t see anything I could ask for mores considering the actual state of technology. I mean the only thing they don’t have is solar power! They look cool, they are strong, light, have different power settings and can be used mounted on a head strap or sitting on the ground at different angles.

The one annoyance these professionals high output headlamp had in common in the past is that they were running on Li-ion battery. which means that when the power ran out you had to go get your charger and plug them back onto something bulky. These days are over, now you can recharge your batteries using a simple usb cable. Consequently, no complex or bulky adapters needed anymore.

USB rechargable you said?

Not all LED flashlight offer that unique USB charging feature, but our recommended Fenix HL60R does. These days USB charger are everywhere. The only thing you need is a tiny universal micro usb cable, same as the one most cell phone have. I can now store one of these in my trunk or toolbox knowing I will always find a place to recharge it. And that is only because I am a wimp, because with these insane large Li-Ion batteries, you can store your light for months and it will stay charged amazingly well.

The case to spend $100 on the best flashlight

I am not often thinking about my flashlight about a survival tool, but it really is. Light or no light, that is quite a difference if you are stranded on the side of the road or worst. Personally I store one of my Fenix HL60R in each of my gun boxes. Not only these will free my hands in case I need to use the gun but I know that I can rely on some serious light power when I need it. The Li-Ion battery hold their charge exceptionally well overtime, and I don’t have the fear to see them turn into white acid powder like most consumer grade AAA.

What do I get for my money

  • 900 Lumen output (blinding level)
  • 4 output levels from white LED
  • 1 night mode red LED
  • USB rechargeable (comes with a short micro usb cable)
  • headmount / headband
  • Li-Ion battery
  • Aluminum waterproof housing
  • stupid grin on your face ;)

ok may be there is a small catch

If I had to really be a pain and find some faults to this products, I’d say only one thing. You need to be comfortable wearing something around your head.
So if you are allergic to headbands, these are not the light you want. On top of that there is the weight of the light. Even though it is pretty light, it is still a bit heavier than the plastic junk you are familiar with, so you will need to keep the headband on the tight side. Considering the insane amount of power available you can always put down the light on the ground and increase the power level, but your battery will run out a bit faster.
I will repeat again that there is so much reserve power in this big batteries, I literally never ever ran out of power during a job, and i often put my light on the ground when I work under the car for example.

how much did you say it was?

OK, starting at around $75, these are not the cheapest flashlight on the market but hey you want the best or what ? You could save yourselves a few bucks in buying a version with a 2600mAh battery. The battery life will be a little shorter while maintaining power output, but believe me, once you get to love this products as much as I do, you will want to buy a 3400mAh battery… These things are addicting. Once you own one you will never want to own or touch any other flash light of lesser quality.
