This set looks ready to take on the elements, just like the real car it’s inspired from

We’ve all seen the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender take a bow in Frankfurt, but that’s not the only surprise the Brits had in store for us. Thanks to a very inspired collaboration with Lego, you can own a miniature plastic-brick Land Rover Defender fitted with all the bells and whistles of the real thing. Well, some of them, anyway, but the level of detail is quite impressive. Stay with us to find out more.

The Lego Technic Land Rover Defender begs not to be kept on a desk

We get it. Legos have always had that special innate talent, if we can put it like that, of adding extra flavor to our desks. In fact, two or three completed sets (especially of the car ilk) can do a world of good to any petrolhead’s man cave, as the undersigned can honestly attest. But with this one, we guess it’s different.

Let’s start with the basics here.

The Land Rover Defender set features 2,573 pieces that once put together, recreate the spitting image of the real-life Defender - its boxy shape helps a lot here as it’s way easier to recreate it through square plastic bricks in comparison to, let’s say, a more fluid body.

Lego’s designers got right a couple of other traits, besides overall shape: the wheel arches look on point, just like the bulgy hood, the round headlights, and the white roof. Basically, you’ll know this toy mimics the real-life 2020 Defender without even having to look at the box. That’s just one chapter of the story.

The other chapter was written when Lego fitted its Defender with a working six-cylinder engine with moving pistons, an independent suspension, front-axle steering, a working winch, and la piece de resistance, ladies and gents, the most intricate and complex gearbox ever used in a Lego Technic set. How complex, you ask? Well, it has high and low ratios, two levers for engaging them, and a gear selector that shifts through its four gears. If this doesn’t make every off-road nut out there jump for joy, we honestly don’t know what will.

Another neat touch is that the transmission’s mechanism is not hidden away somewhere you can’t see it. Well, it is, but you can fold the rear seat to watch it in action just like you can lift the hood and see the engine firing on all its cylinders.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip: you can open the rear door by turning the rear-mounted spare wheel and control the steering via the rotary knob located towards the front end of the roof.

Four-wheel drive and no less than three differentials complete an otherwise hearty menu when it comes to mechanical goodies.

When completed, the Lego Defender is over eight inches (22 cm high), 16 inches long (42 cm), and seven inches wide (20 cm). That also contributes a bit to its non-desk suitability, since it’s quite large. That doesn’t mean, however, that you’ll have to take it out and splash into puddles of mud - and we all know you won’t do that, although you could still have some fun with it on sandy or snowy surfaces, we guess, just to get a small taste at that off-road feel the Defender has been oozing since day one. And that’s not all: the whole set is spiced up by small details such as the roof rack which includes a storage box, pannier, the ladder, and traction mats.
