This is Sennheiser playing the soundbar game for the first time

You’ve most likely heard of Sennheiser in a different context, which is that of high-quality headphones and microphones. With the AMBEO soundbar, however, the company is looking to tap into the future of home cinema by offering a sleek-looking device capable of rendering studio-grade sound that adapts to the setup of your living room.

Soundbars have been around since the early 2000s and ever since their popularity has rapidly soared, mostly because they’re more discrete and elegant (also cheaper) alternatives to the fully-blown speaker sound systems that might be better at filling a room with sound but usually take up a lot of space and cost way more.

First and foremost, you should know that the AMBEO soundbar was announced by Sennheiser back in January 2019, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where visitors could experience its 5.1.4 sound and 30Hz deep bass without the addition of extra speaker or an external subwoofer.

The Sennheiser AMBEO tips the scales at around 18.5 kilos (that’s about 41 pounds) and features a neat design that’ll fit most of the living room designs out there.

It can also turn stereo and 5.1 audio into 3D sound thanks to Upmix Technology and offer five presets designed to fit a range of scenarios - Movie, Music, Sports, News, and Neutral.

This way, you’ll be able to enjoy both the Super Bowl with the fellas and a weekend of Netflix binge-watching.

You can adjust AMBEO’s settings, and select presets through the Sennheiser Smart Control app that’s available for iOS and Android devices. Among the features you can play around with are the three different modes - Light, Standard, Boost, and the equalizer. New features will be deployed via WiFi and app updates.

On the hardware front, the sleek case hides 13 drivers, including six 4-inch long-throw woofers, five 1-inch alloy fabric dome tweeters, and two 3.5-inch top-firing speakers.

Connectivity is achieved with built-in Google Chromecast, Bluetooth and a handful of ports: three HDMI In entries, one HDMI Out port, one USB (used for servicing and updating), one Ethernet, and one AUX In. Sennheiser also tells us the soundbar’s operating temperature range slots between +10 and +40 degrees Celsius, with storage range being a tad more permissive, between -20 to +70 degrees Celsius.

As for size, the AMBEO soundbar measures 126.5 x 13.5 x 17.1 cm (that’s roughly 49.8 x 5.3 x 6.7 inches), so it should fit nicely pretty much everywhere. You won’t have to worry about the soundbar not being positioned in the center of the front wall, though. Sennheiser says that it fitted the soundbar with an automatic room calibration feature that allows it to adapt to the surroundings. Essentially, the soundbar knows where a room’s walls are situated and thus can counter bad room characteristics to a certain degree.

Ideally, you’ll want to position the AMBEO soundbar up to 5 meters to the left wall, ceiling, and to the right wall. But no two living rooms are alike, and that’s why the room calibration feature was introduced.

The Sennheiser AMBEO soundbar also supports 3D audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, MPEG-H, and DTS:X.

You can order your AMBEO soundbar right now, as it is available for €2,499 (that’s $2,792 at current exchange rates).

But in case you’re the active type always on the go and don’t get to spend too much time at home, perhaps the Sennheiser AMBEO iOS smart headset is something that tickles your fancy. You can have it on Amazon for $299.95.
