Unu’s Electric Scooter Is Your Retro-Styled Solution To City Traffic
The perfect mix between efficient mobility and top-shelf aestheticsby Tudor Rus, on
You might have heard of Unu thanks to its battery-powered Scooter Classic. Founded in 2013, the company has released a new retrolicious product this month that’s simply called the Unu Scooter. The e-scooter is designed and built in Berlin, Germany, and it has a certain Honda e prototype flavor that made our interest pique from the first moment we got a glimpse at the official press photos.
Unu’s Scooter is all about riding in style with zero emissions
Some folks have been quick to label Unu’s new Scooter as the Millennials’ Vespa. Well, we don’t know about that, but this is by far the cutest e-scooter we’ve seen in a long time. Sure, there are other details that matter here besides design, so we’ll deal with them one at a time.
First of all, the company’s sales approach is very similar to Tesla’s in the sense that its e-scooters are sold online. In other words, you can configure yours online and have it delivered to your front door, together with number plates and insurance documents. In fact, the only thing you need to do is mount the mirrors, and you’re good to go.
Speaking of configuring one, Unu Scooter’s heart is a Bosch-sourced electric hub motor integrated with the rear wheel. Unu says the Scooter can reach a top speed of 45 km/h, but you’ll need your driver’s license to ride one as the Unu Scooter falls into the 50cc scooter class. Three model variants are available, each with a different power output: Basic (2 kW), Standard (3 kW), and Plus (4 kW).
The removable battery pack comes from LG and is smartly integrated under the seat. Charging is done through a cable that can be plugged into any regular power outlet and we’re told you’ll have to wait around seven hours before the battery is fully charged. Maximum range is estimated at 50 km (31 miles) with one battery, but with two batteries it can be doubled at 100 km (62 miles).
Since we mentioned the storage space under the seat, know that it has a capacity of 45 liters (1.6 cubic feet) and can accommodate two helmets plus other personal items such as small bags, tablets, laptops, and whatnot. Smaller objects like keys, phones, and wallets can be stored in a special compartment found at the rear of the seat, and you can even hook up a bag between your knees.
Get full control of your Unu Scooter with the Unu App
Yes, there’s an app that allows you to overlook several aspects of the Unu Scooter ownership experience. For starters, you can check the e-scooter’s location and charging status at any time, without having to be anywhere near it. If you’re not next to your scooter and it starts moving, there’s even a theft protection system that kicks in. Plus, you get to start it directly from the app through a digital key.
