First Ride, Fun, or Commuter, This Could Be Your Huckleberry

Benelli put together the TNT300 “Tornado” with both the entry-level market and the frugal commuter segment in mind. This sporty little ride brings an unintimidating powerplant to the table tucked away in a naked sportbike assembly that fits in with current styling standards and carries more than a little Italian DNA. Sophisticated enough to pass muster with the emissions folks, this ride nevertheless presents a relatively simple alternative to some of the available options on the market today. Competition is stiff in the bottom-tier streetbikes from some very well established names, and while Benelli enjoys some 100-year-plus roots itself, the name now belongs to the Qjian Jiang Group (QJ) based in China. Today I’m going to take a look and see how well the transition is working out for this storied Italian company.

Benelli must have lost its old world charm of making machines pecked with impeccable high cap mills and is finding it difficult to proclaim its identity amidst the modern and competitive world, even more after a Chinese firm acquired it. Benelli has started showcasing us products designed by CentroStile Benelli, and slowly their reputation seems to have gotten back to its original charm albeit with entry-level machines.

The Italian marquee Benelli, which after raking in some interesting numbers with its range of naked streetfighters, has now come up with its first fully faired motorcycle in the entry-level segment, the 302R. With what is supposed to just be a ’fairing slapped on’ issue with the naked TNT 300, the 302R promises more than that.

2013 Benelli Tornado Naked TRE899

The Benelli Tornado Naked TRE899 is a sporty naked especially created for those who love adrenaline and speed.

As far as design is concerned the Tornado Naked TRE899 is wrapped in a futuristic skin with faceted surfaces and a compact tail guard that underline its aggressive character. The bike is painted in a tasty, new matt black colour combined with a flame-red frame and a few white parts.

The motorcycle’s backbone is represented by a stiff yet light frame made of a trestle steel front and adjoining aluminium alloy cast. In the center of the frame sits an in Line 3 Cylinders, 4-Stroke, Liquid Cooled engine with 4 valves per cylinder. The unit has a displacement of 898 Cm³ and puts out a maximum power of 88 Kw (120 Cv) at 9500 Rpm and 88 Nm (9 Kgm) of torque at 8000 Rpm.

2013 Benelli Tornado Naked TRE 1130 R

The sporty spirit of the Benelli Tornado TRE 1130 R has conquered a lot of fans. Its tasty design lines inspire power, while the imposing note of the exhaust is an instant head turner.

At the heart of the Benelli Tornado TRE 1130 R stays a capable inline three-cylinder engine with 88 mm bore and 62 travel, exceeding little over 1,130 cm3 of displacement.

The unit features electronic injection through three large 53 mm diameter circular throttle bodies, two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The engine delivers a maximum output of 157.8 HP (116 kW) at 10200 rpm and 120 Nm (12.2 kgm) of torque at 8400.

Power is sent to the rear wheel through a 6-speed transmission with dry clutch, anti-skipping device and hydraulic control.

On the other hand, the frame is composed of a main section in the form of a tubular steel trellis completed with strong aluminium plates.
