The New Kids On The Block For Adventure Touring

BMW presses on into adventure-bike territory with a new generation of F-GS models, the F 750 GS and F 850 GS. This adventuresome pair follows the same design as it predecessors with the 750 serving as a road tourer and the 850 set up for work in what you might call less-civilized areas be it fire trails, dirt roads or deserts. An all-new powerplant delivers 77 horsepower and 95 horsepower to the 750 and 850 respectively, and each enjoys other features specifically geared to its host’s purpose in life. The newly-redesigned frame and bodywork, in the words of the factory, give the range “a more dynamic and masculine design.” I’m not sure what to do with that since I tend to think of bikes like I think of boats, in the feminine, but I reckon someone at the factory decided to made the range ’identify’ as male this year. Wherever you land on the looks, form follows function on bikes like these (or at least it should) and so it’s the rest of the machine that should matter the most. Let’s dig in and check out the specialized gear and capabilities of these two all-new rides.

BMW Motorrad USA gets a second recall in a span of two weeks.

BMW Motorrad USA gets a second recall in a span of two weeks.

The NHTSA has taken this call to rectify insufficiently visible rear reflectors.

A couple of weeks ago, the German auto giant had made a huge recall for the affected eleven models in the product line-up manufactured from 2006 through 2017. In total, this recall will affect close to 9,000 units that have been accessorized with the faulty turn signals which seem to be of lower standards than what the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) require.

Now, the same institution has issued another recall for two of its models, the 2014-2016 F800GT and the 2015-2016 F800R for improper reflectors, which fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

2014 - 2016 BMW F 800 GT

BMW designed the F 800 GT to replace the aging F 800 ST, and improve upon the sport-touring capabilities of the family. The new model brings a sleeker, more modern look to the table along with improved performance out of the repurposed ST mill. In its stock configuration the GT comes with ABS as the only bit of gadgetry, but the list of available options includes Beemer’s Electronic Suspension and Automatic Stability Control to name a few. Sporty looks, updated electronics and enhanced comfort are all part of the package, but is it enough to compete in a market segment with so many tour-tastic sport bikes? Let’s find out.

2015 - 2017 BMW F 800 GS / F 800 GS Adventure

The lines between on- and off-road enthusiasts are becoming rather blurred nowadays, with a majority of major manufacturers having established themselves within the dual-sport/adventure bike sector. BMW is one such builder, and is even into its second generation of adventure bikes with the F 800 GS and F 800 GS Adventure. The former is more of a casual commuter / funbike, while the “Adventure” is geared toward touring and long-range work, and naturally, both come with the top-notch engineering one expects from BMW.

Beemer’s F 700 GS replaced the 650 version back in ’12, and the line is still going strong as we move into the ’17 MY. This year, the factory threw on a number of substantial upgrades that increases the value a bit to help it compete in an ever more crowded market.

Adventure bikes are fairly ubiquitous nowadays, and I think almost everyone but the American manufacturers are making something in that vein, so it’s important to stay on the cutting edge as the adventure-bike segment continues to mature. Today I’m going to take a good look at the ’17 model and try to gauge how well Beemer has done toward this end.

BMW Motorrad Announces Plan To Build All-Female Racing Team For 2016 GS Trophy Series

BMW Motorrad Announces Plan To Build All-Female Racing Team For 2016 GS Trophy Series

BMW Motorrad is taking an unprecedented - and admittedly awesome - step in putting together the first-ever all-female international Trophy team that will compete at the GS Trophy endurance race. The company behind the competition is calling on all women motorcycle riders to sign up for a chance to be part of a history-making team that will compete in the biennial racing series.

If this has the makings of an all-around good idea, it’s because it is. The GS Trophy has been around since 2008 and while a handful of women racers have competed in certain events in the past, none of them have made it into the finals, much less been part of an all-female team.

BMW hopes to change that with this announcement, knowing full well that the growth in the number of women riders has created more interest in the sport from the fairer gender. This watershed moment is now being put in place to firmly bring home that point.

According to BMW, all applications entered into the GS Trophy website be taken into consideration by a jury, who will then choose ten finalists who will travel to South Africa to compete in a special qualifier from September 9 to 16, 2015. The three female riders who show the most promise in these qualifiers will then be chosen to be part of the 2016 GS Trophy series.

Female riders, especially those with experience riding the BMW R1200GS or F800GS bikes, have until June 26, 2015 to fill out their applications on the GS Trophy site. Best not be tardy about this because you can expect a lot of female riders to vie for those precious qualifier slots.

Video: Chris McNeil Stunt Rides Up Hunter Mountain

Performing motorcycle stunts in closed circuits are dangerous enough in it of themselves. But Chris “Teach” McNeil is not your regular stunt rider.

Known mostly for his incredible exploits on a bike, McNeil, together with motorcycle jacket line Joe Rocket, recently took the challenge of going up to Hunter Mountain in New York using McNeil’s BMW F800GS.

While the video itself looks like a promotional clip to showcase Joe Rocket’s next generation Ballistic Revolution motorcycle - “it represents a series advancement so significant, it’s more Revolution than Evolution,” so says Joe Rocket - it also comes with an incredible array of motorcycle stunts that not a lot of people are capable of pulling of. McNeil even drives on whatever surface he finds himself in, wasting little time showing everyone why he’s earned the nickname “Teach”.

Mix in some scenic shots of Hunter Mountain and you have a video that accomplishes a lot in just a little over three minutes. We get to see Joe Rocket’s new digs, enjoy the breathtaking scenery of upstate New York, and most importantly, watch McNeil do what he does best.

Kind of makes you want to buy the jacket, zip up, and take a ride of your own, right? Then again, none of us have the skill and stunt-riding talent of Chris McNeil. We can buy the Joe Rocket, though. That’s the easy part. Doing those stunts? Not so much.

Pics Aplenty: BMW F 800 Reloaded by AC Schnitzer

BMW’s tuner, AC Schnitzer, presents their latest intervention on a motorcycle. The BMW F 800 Reloaded, as it is called, has suffered multiple changes and upgrades, the sportier look being valued through the infinity of accessories. The mid-sized naked known as the F 800 R now drifts away from its origins and actually looks very similar to its bigger sibling, the K 1300 R, which was also tuned by AC Schnitzer.

Thus, in the list of replaced parts and accessories we find: new front spoiler, which covers the engine almost entirely, Stealth silencer with EC approval and removable DB-Killer, WP central shock, WP fork, crash pads, high performance air filter, wider handlebar and adjustable brake and clutch levers. Also, the F 800 Reloaded was fitted with a new headlight fairing and is covered in a color called Titanium.

So this is how you turn an average F 800 R into a much more aggressive two-wheeler if you’re an experienced German tuner working with both cars and motorcycles.

The Italian designer sees in the R 1250 GS as a totally new motorcycle to take around the world, one with sport-touring credentials and sharper looks. The bigger Boxer engine is supposed to develop 120hp, while the bike weighs 18kg (39.68 lbs) less than the current selling one and relies on totally different weight distribution and shorter wheelbase than ever before.

We can’t help noticing the underseat exhaust and much more compact overall look, which is what riders expect from their million miles motorcycle.

High Concept: BMW HP2-800S

This is a very plausible concept that could enlarge BMW’s middleweight lineup in the future.

Based on the 800cc parallel-twin engine powering both models in the F800 range (the F800GS and F800R), the BMW HP2-800S was sketched by industrial designer Roberto Redaelli in strict accordance with BMW’s demands.

Apart from the 90bhp engine, the HP2 800S would use a lightweight aluminum frame and carbon-fiber bodywork. Overall weight is supposed to be of 385.8 pounds.

We have to admit that this concept looks very interesting and it stands honest chances to become reality given the fact that the most important aspects prior to production have been realistically thought at.

2009 BMW F 800 R breaks loose

BMW has just launched the new F 800 R, a naked bike powered by a parallel twin engine with electronic fuel injection. Displacing 798 cc, this makes 87 hp and 86 Nm of torque also thanks to an Akrapovic sport silencer retrofitted, ensuring that a crazy sound accompanies the awesome performance.

The 320-millimetre Brembo double disk brake at the front ensures maximum stopping power, while optional BMW Motorrad ABS and TPC Tyre Pressure Control further enhance safety. Also, highly maneuverable, thanks in part to the lightweight aluminum in its rigid frame and dynamically styled double swing-arm, which helps keep its dry weight down to just 177 kilograms, this makes for a great all around product, especially for twisted European back roads. This is also where BMW made the three videos attached to this article so that you get a good impression of what the 2009 BMW F 800 R is made for.

Recall issued for 2008 BMW F800 GS

Recall issued for 2008 BMW F800 GS

A problem related to the axle shaft wall thickness determined BMW of North America to recall model year 2008 F800 GS motorcycles. According to the German manufacturer, the axle shaft wall thickness may not have been manufactured according to specifications resulting into the possibility of the axle shaft to deform and increase the risk of accidents.

The correction consists in dealers inspecting the axle shaft assembly and replacing or repairing the necessary components free of charge. Although BMW has not yet started the owner notification schedule, all 2008 BMW F800 GS owners can call BMW at 1-800-831-1117 and see the solving of their possible problem from there.

Taking such a measure over a specific model does not necessarily mean that all bikes recalled are affected and that are imminent dangers riding down the streets, but that the manufacturer has a responsible approach towards their customer safety and try to exclude all possible risks of a crash due to mechanical failure.

The police and the military here simply continued to solicit the BMW F650GS in a great number, but also due to the multitude of spare and aftermarket parts already delivered, the German manufacturer is back to take care of unfinished business.

Even though called G650GS, the engine and chassis will be exactly the same as before being replaced by the parallel twin F800GS. But despite Europe’s nostalgia, the bike – which is made in China – doesn’t head there yet.

Finally, U.S. BMW Motorrad dealers get the much-awaited 2009 F 800 GS

BMW Motorrad’s Year of the Enduro Continues with the Arrival of a Powerful Dual-Purpose Twin
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - August 29, 2008... There’s still time to rule the woods, the desert and a four-lane highway with a versatile new ride this summer. After much anticipation in the motorcycling community, the all-new 2009 BMW F 800 GS has arrived at U.S. BMW Motorrad dealers.

On the road, the F 800 GS offers impressive speed and acceleration with its six-speed gear box and parallel twin engine, delivering 85 horsepower and 62 lb/feet of torque. Features like heated hand grips, available ABS (which can be turned off when riding off-road) and an on-board computer provide the comfort and safety of a long-distance touring bike.

For off-road riding, the F 800 GS comes equipped with 21inch front and 17 inch rear wire spoked wheels, wide foot pegs, an underseat 4.2 gallon gas tank for better weight distribution, and a standard under-engine skid plate. Possessing the power-to-weight ratio of a high-performance enduro, the feisty F 800 GS is a lean, mean impressive handling machine - no matter where the road leads.

The 2009 F 800 GS has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $10,520 (excluding freight). The Standard Package, offered at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $12,025 (excluding freight) includes heated hand grips, Anti-Lock Brakes, an on-board computer, and white (clear lens) turn signals. It is available in two colors - Dark Magnesium Metallic and Sunset Yellow.

Rooted in BMW History
The F 800 GS is the latest addition to BMW Motorrad’s dual-sport model lineup. The bike follows in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed R 1200 GS - which traces its roots back to the early 1980s when BMW won the grueling Paris-Dakar rally four times with its trailblazing dual-purpose R 80 GS.

BMW Motorrad’s GS model line also includes the upgraded R 1200 GS and GS Adventure. Since their debut in 2004, the versatile R 1200 GS and its rugged companion, the R 1200 GS Adventure, have earned praise from motorcycle enthusiasts and the press for their exceptional performance both on and off the road.

The R 1200 GS has earned award after award, including Cycle World’s Best Open Class Street Bike and the International Journalist’s Panel "Best Bike in the World."
The R 1200 GS Adventure was named "Best Adventure Bike" three years in a row by editors of Motorcyclist Magazine.

Ready for Competition
With its wide range of enduro motorcycles and increasing numbers of riders who enjoy the "adventure sport" lifestyle, BMW Motorrad is celebrating 2008 as the "Year of the Enduro" by launching the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy competition on new F 800 GS bikes.

The International GS Trophy is a skills-based contest with GS riders coming from all over the world for a final meeting to pick the best of the best in Tunisia, North Africa, October 15 - 24. The competition is not a race, but a lengthy and challenging ride, both on and off-road, through the rugged countryside of Tunisia.

The event will include numerous tests in individual riding skills and group teamwork to overcome natural and manmade obstacles in the course of the ride.

A team of six riders is selected to compete for the GS Trophy from each of the following BMW Motorrad markets: the United States, Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Japan. Three of the six riders will be journalists, while the remaining three will be GS owners selected by BMW Motorrad in each market. BMW GS and G 650 Xchallenge owners from the U.S. had until July 24, 2008 to submit applications to participate in the 2008 International GS Trophy Competition. German performance shop transforms BMW F800GS into Hypermotard

German performance shop transforms BMW F800GS into Hypermotard

A.C. Schnitzer radically transforms the already impressive BMW F800GS off-roader into a ready to hit the track hypermotard. The tuners have simply added 17-inch wheels wearing road rubber and retuned the suspensions for street use.

The engine remains the same 800cc unit developing 85 horsepower, as well as the entire bike, except the previous mentioned changes and adjusting. This upgrade, if you will, took place in the German performance shop and it didn’t took more than a few hours once all the parts were there.

Who knows, maybe BMW will be inspired by this creation and add it to their lineup. I sure know it looks good.
