How Fast Is Fast Enough?

Public demand for race-ready road bikes has never been higher, and the folks down at the Bayerische Motoren Werke are trying to take that momentum to the bank with its HP4 Race. Like many of its track-day competitors have recently done, BMW set about the business of mini-mass producing a bike that carries as much of its factory-team race gear as they are comfortable sharing with the world. However, the factory isn’t risking much in this bid for a slice of the hardcore race-fan market with a limited-edition run of 750 hand-built superbike units, so in addition to the obvious attraction of the technology and power we can add ’rarity’ to the curb appeal. Here we have a 215 horsepower engine pushing the world’s first all carbon-fiber frame with a veritable alphabet soup of features that are surely indispensable for racers looking for an edge.

And doing so, they have just received the 2018 JEC Innovation Award in the Leisure & Sports category for the development and manufacture of a rear swinging arm made of carbon fiber.

The mighty BMW HP4’s engine lasts only for 3100 miles.

The 215 bhp Carbon fibre maniac sure is a high baller.

You know that it is a big deal when BMW themselves call the HP4 ‘the most exclusive BMW motorcycle of all time’. And if you are hunting for one of these now, you may probably be very late. Even if you have $78,000 on you to spare, as only a handful of 750 will be built by the German technocrats.

Assuming you have already placed an order for yourself and are one amongst the 80 units dedicated to the states, know that this strictly track-only bike will roughly last you somewhere between 10 to 15 full blown track days at your favourite circuit. And after that, it’s time for a brand new engine swap.
