How Fast Is Fast Enough?

Public demand for race-ready road bikes has never been higher, and the folks down at the Bayerische Motoren Werke are trying to take that momentum to the bank with its HP4 Race. Like many of its track-day competitors have recently done, BMW set about the business of mini-mass producing a bike that carries as much of its factory-team race gear as they are comfortable sharing with the world. However, the factory isn’t risking much in this bid for a slice of the hardcore race-fan market with a limited-edition run of 750 hand-built superbike units, so in addition to the obvious attraction of the technology and power we can add ’rarity’ to the curb appeal. Here we have a 215 horsepower engine pushing the world’s first all carbon-fiber frame with a veritable alphabet soup of features that are surely indispensable for racers looking for an edge.

2013 BMW HP4 CARBON

Meet the BMW HP4 Carbon - a fast motorcycle wrapped in a sporty skin and equipped with state of the art technologies.

This German machine features a series of HP components which give it a fairly unique personality. Among them there are the HP brake lever, HP clutch lever and HP rider footrest system. You also get a special HP engine spoiler, HP plate holder and the HP fuel tank trim all made of carbon.

This stunning supersport motorcycle is propelled by a similarly stunning water/oil-cooled, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke in-line engine with four titanium valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts. Fire up the engine and you’ll, be assaulted by a peak power of 193 bhp at 13,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 112 Nm at 9,750 rpm.

The BMW HP2 Sport has successfully made a stir in the industry, thanks to the racing dynamics it now espouses.

Of the many features of the HP2 Sport, it bears pointing out that the bike comes with an air/oil-cooled flat twin four stroke DOHC (with radial valves) engine that’s impressive by all accounts. The engine configuration also has a cylinder head cover made of carbon fiber with replaceable valve cover guards, a complete stainless steel exhaust system, a six-speed gearbox, a digital engine management with twin-spark ignition system, a double oil cooler, and a closed loop 3-way catalytic converter with oxygen sensor.

The HP2 Sport also has a slew of state-of-the-art features that will be a boon to its owners. It’s got a low beam headlamp height adjustment, an LED rear indicator, hazard warning flasher, a permanent headlamp beam, digital race instruments with 2D cluster, and an electronic immobilizer.

Last, the HP2 Sport doesn’t complete its package without the prevalent use of carbon fiber. In this case, the lightweight material is all over the bike, including the front and the rear, the self supporting body work, and the engine spoiler made of carbon fiber.
