Harley-Davidson Low Rider

Harley-Davidson’s Low Rider model started production in ’77 as the FXS way back in the Shovelhead days, through the Evo FXR era, the Dyna dynasty, and has now crossed over into the second generation Softail platform. This makes it one of the most enduring and endearing models to ever come out of Milwaukee. As one of the MoCo’s classic cruisers it has always been built around a narrow “FX” frame and skinny front end with details scattered throughout that make it a bona fide factory-custom machine. Power comes from whichever base-model Big Twin was popular at that time with an “S” version that has a punched-out powerplant to introduce an element of performance to the family.

2015 - 2017 Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider / Low Rider S

When the original FXS Low Rider hit showroom floors back in ’77, it was immediately popular and dominated Harley-Davidson sales. Based on the FX Super Glide, which was essentially a mishmash of parts from the big-frame FL and smaller XL (Sportster) models, the FXS was the first attempt by the factory (under the blighted AMF banner) to emulate the look of the home-job customs that were popular at the time.

Since then, the FXS changed from the original, hard-mount frame to the rubber-mount, FXR frame in the early eighties, and has been built on the new, hybrid Dyna frame (FXDL) since ’91. Fast forward to 2017, and you can see The Motor Company hard at it to further improve and refine the Low Rider, and these latest versions are certainly the best yet. Read on to find out why.

The Low Rider cements its place in Harley history as one of its most-popular cruisers with its jump from the standard swingarm models to the new Softail family. Dubbed a “West Coast-style” classic, the Low Rider and its “S” variants run with dead-short rear suspension to slam the saddle down to just over two-feet off the deck, laden. Most of the Low Rider models have rolled with no bodywork to speak of beyond the minimal sheet-metal appointments with the notable exceptions of the models that sport a teeny-tiny bullet cowl that does more for the overall look and less in the way of actual rider protection.

Still billed as a showroom-custom Big-Twin, the Low Riders will frequently carry either a wealth of chrome or a dearth of same with ample blackout treatment instead. Drilled-out sheet-metal components and heat shields are a frequent addition for the home-spun look they engender, and of course, the concurrent loss of weight that plays further into the performance aspect of the model.
