Harley-Davidson Brings Two Electric Concepts To 2019 X-Games
No doubt about it, electric bikes are becoming more viable all the time, and even the Harley-Davidson Motor Company is getting in on the action. Milwaukee has teased us, literally for years, with tantalizing tidbits from its Project: LiveWire initiative. It finally announced a 2020 release for its streetwise spark-o-matic not long ago, and immediately went about the business of teasing us with two more EV bikes. Well, now we have the skinny on them. The MoCo was at the 2019 X-Games in Aspen, Colorado, and it brought the two new rides for the crowd’s consumption. They’re still in the concept phase, and as such are not necessarily what the production models will look like, but ya’ gotta’ start somewhere.

It might not be the best of times for the Milwaukee brand these recent years. It has recently come under the hammer from Green activists opposing the waiving of pollution fines, and before that, slow growth and lack of customer demands forced the company to decide on closing its factory in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2019.
Luckily, Harley has a few tricks in its arsenal to keep the excitement ticking amongst its enthusiasts. And after nearly three months of building and a month of online voting, the Harley-Davidson Battle of the Kings (BOK) has finally culminated with five finalists from the UK dealer builds (The BOK is conducted for the European dealers only).
If 2016-17 were the years of the Cafe-Racers, 2018-19 are for the Street Trackers
Looking at what customers were making out of their products in the last couple of years, manufacturers forayed into satisfying the current wave of enthusiasts wanting custom and classic motorbikes. Café-Racers, Bobbers and the lot.
Visually powerful, intellectually elegant and above all, timeless. They became a cornucopia of sorts for people wanting a machine that could take them back in time and re-live the classic age.
With the winters settled, and the holiday season excitingly close, the motorcycle industry has already set the pace for the next couple of years by showcasing bonkers designs and products that will take on our roads pretty soon.
Luckily, there is one more breed of the ‘Classics’ amidst those. The makers have already shown appreciation to them and will head to production pretty soon. It’s what they as the Street Trackers.
Hollywood has always been a tremendous platform for car and bike companies to show off their new creations to a huge audience. More often than not, the association with some of these blockbuster movies tend to last longer in consumer’s heads, making it a great avenue by which brands can promote their products. We saw it with the Chevrolet Camaro in the Transformers franchise and now, it looks like we’re about to see the same thing with Harley-Davidson’s long-standing association with Marvel Studios.
After having appeared in the two Captain America movies, Harley-Davidson is returning to the big screen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But instead of showcasing one of its production bikes, the American bike brand decided to switch things up a little by giving the all-electric LiveWire Concept a stage to strut its stuff. Really, what bigger stage is there right now than the highly anticipated sequel to the Avengers?
Not only is Harley capitalizing on the expected global success of the movie, but having the LiveWire play a prominent role as Captain America’s chosen stead will go a long way in establishing some semblance of credibility for the bike. It’s still unclear how far Harley’s going to take the project - it’s still a concept at this point - but with its presence in the movie, coupled with the recent announcement of a global tour, there’s no denying that the all-electric LiveWire concept is getting a whole lot of mainstream attention.

Vintage bikes are unrefined, simple, and rough around the edges, making them the perfect bases for custom bike building. Thunderbike has been busy working on a custom vintage bike itself, as it rebuilt, restored, and customized a 1951 Harley-Davidson EL Pan Head.
Thunderbike began by completely stripping the frame and body, and draping it in a matte black undercoat. Over this base coat are highlights of orange and white, also in a matte finish. The paint and striping was completed by Kruse Design. This gives the bike a modern look while retaining its vintage feel. The vintage, single-rider, custom seat was built by Maas Sitz Leder.
On the front and rear, this custom Harley EL features TB Vegas wheels wrapped in Firestone rubber. Next to each rim, you get a K-tech brake disc to help bring this vintage bike to a halt much faster than its factory drum brakes could.
Mounted to the frame is a 74-cubic-inch, twin cylinder Pan Head motor. This motor has been fully gutted and rebuilt to the original factory specifications and all of the brightwork has been recoated in nickel. This twin-cylinder powerplant features an S&S Super E fuel system, S&S manifold, TB Classic air filter, and a TB flying pan Spezial exhaust system that is coated in matte black.
Driving the power to the rear wheel is a belt-to-chain-drive system, mixing a little bit of the old and new. Thunderbike has yet to release a price on this custom bike, but we’re pretty confident that it’ll range somewhere between expensive and completely outrageous. What we do know is that this bike looks completely awesome and is currently available in Germany.
Harley-Davidson motorcycles are rideable legends, iron horses used by riders to traverse the world’s continents and they never seem to stop. Best characterized by their timeless looks and loud engines, it seems like they’ll be here a long time from now and we truly hope they will. But we also must admit that the need is felt for Harleys to evolve radically in the appropriate future, so it is just a matter of doing so in the right way.
Designer Jonathan Russell sees a way for H-D to appeal to 2020’s young crowd with a concept bike that looks clean and inviting, just the kind of machine needed to bring a fresh new feel in the Milwaukee company’s lineup. Although it looks like the 2010 H-D concept is all about a big engine, two wheels and a pair of handlebars, the designer also proposes some technological goodies from Apple.
Featuring lots of aluminum and laser etching as well as LEDs hidden under perforations in the bodywork, which should conclude in the thank-mounted instruments, taillight and signal lights, would this bike should look like a decade-old laptop on wheels? It may seem like we’ve uploaded the wrong pictures for this post, but we’ve checked it twice and this is what CGI designer Miguel Cotto imagines when thinking at the “original Harley look” 10 years from now. This sportsbike featuring hubless wheels, apparently an air-cooled engine and plenty other nonsense to think at when saying Harley-Davidson, qualifies as 2010’s most implausible concept bike.
Simply take a look at what the Milwaukee-based company was producing 10 years ago and you won’t be that far off if thinking they’ll stick to that in the future as well.
Now that Harley-Davidson is concentrating on its own brand after bringing Buell to a sad end of the road and planning to sell MV Agusta, we became even more interested in their future plans and came across a concept bike designed by Miguel Cotto. The interesting part about it is that, unlike the usual concept designs that we see nowadays, power comes from a high-revving 883cc engine claimed to retain the HD sound that drives bikers crazy about their bikes.
We like the hubless wheels and this concept HD motorcycle in general, but certainly can’t imagine a pack of highway wolfs getting their beards on this baby not even ten years from this day.
It finally happened! Someone thought at combining the looks of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with an electric motor and the result is definitely something that most fans of the American builder could enjoy as their future bad boy toy. But how does the name Harley-Davidson even stand next to words such as electric motor, green technology and so on? French designer Nicolas Petit is the man that made it possible and although the intention was to design the electric cruiser in the Milwaukee style, the first thing that prospects will ask for is the V-twin engine powering all present Harley-Davidson models and the only electric thing fitted on those is the starter. So that’s where the title comes from.
Called the Trunk, this concept bike is definitely appealing and the motor, which is enclosed in a rounded case, isn’t that bad either. The only problem is that the oddly named thing will never sound, vibrate and feel like a veritable Harley-Davidson motorcycle and that’s in contradiction with all that this manufacturer is all about.
Throughout history, Harley-Davidson proved it has the power adapt, but an electric motor will only power the company on its big cloud reserved in Heaven. Or is that just me?
Harley-Davidson is expected to introduce a new concept next month at the Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany. A leaning reverse-trike, the new machine will be based on the 115 horsepower Revolution motor powering the V-Rod, but up until this time only the patent drawings have been released.
Much ahead the American Motor Company, Brudeli Tech has announced production of their Leanster 645L and the official launch at the same upcoming motorcycle saloon.
Even though Harley-Davidson started producing trikes earlier this year, the future concept is expected to be an even greater success, considering the markets demands. Still, Harley’s trike will be a half way competitor for the Leanster as this last one has the ability to go both on paved roads and off the road is necesary, something that we’re not expecting from Harley-Davidson.
