The iconic American tourer with DNA that goes back to 1958

Harley-Davidson made some fairly major changes for MY2018, but the Road King stands firmly unchanged as a link to the past with a heritage that arguably started in 1958 with the Duo-Glide. The base-model comes equipped the 107 cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight, though for 2019, the factory graced the Road King Special with the Milwaukee-Eight 114. Engine output places them well within the power-tourer bracket with a whopping 111 pound-feet of torque on tap (123 pound-feet for the Special) to push its curb weight that you may as well call it half-a-ton with a rider plus whatever is in your bags and on the pillion.

It keeps getting better in the 2017 model year with the new Milwaukee-Eight engine and a special trim package called — wait for it — the Road King Special. Updated looks and performance are the main selling points here, over and above the usual litany of reasons to consider the Road King, and the recent demise of Victory Motorcycles makes this ride even more important to H-D in the long run.

2015 - 2016 Harley-Davidson Road King

Harley-Davidson has some deep roots in the motorcycle industry, and frequently draws on them when designing newer models. Detractors say the brand is mired in the past, but I submit that some of us appreciate the old is new again approach that gives the brand a certain continuity and connection to the models that made it great in the first place.

Harley’s ’15-’16 FLHR Road King is just such a model. The FLHR replaced the Electra Glide Sport as Harley’s non-faired bagger, but if you look hard enough you can see shades of the old “Duo Glide” FL in the front end, fuel tank and tank-mount instrument console from the late ’50s.

Although the folks at the factory bill this bike as a touring model, I kind of feel like it’s more of a cruiser with light touring capabilities, especially when compared to Harley’s full-dresser touring models. Let’s take a look at the Road King together and you can make up your own mind on that point.

2012 Harley-Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic

The Road King Classic model takes the nostalgic look and feel of the Road King a little further with extra details for this road-worthy touring bike, like leather-wrapped saddlebags, chrome fuel tank console, tooled metal detailing on the fender, tank, seat and bags, and chrome laced wheels with wide whitewall tires.

The motorcycle is built on Harley-Davidson’s innovative touring chassis which is based on a single-spar, rigid backbone frame and a stout swingarm. The ride quality is assured by a front 41.3 mm telescopic fork and a rear air-adjustable shock absorber.

Power comes from a 1690 cc air-cooled, twin cam 103 engine with Integrated Oil-Cooler and Fuel System Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI). Power is sent to the rear wheel through a six speed cruise drive gear box and the combined fuel consumption is rated at 42 mpg.

2012 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King

The Harley-Davidson Road King was launched in 1994, but shortly after it managed to become a benchmark in its segment. The 2012 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King looks like a timeless boulevard cruiser, but it is also a fully equipped, long-distance tourer.

As far as comfort goes, the 2012 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King features a detachable windshield, an air-adjustable touring rear suspension and a comfortable seating position. You also get a set of spacious, standard saddlebags.

The Harley Davidson Road king is equipped with a 1690 cc Twin Cam 103 engine which sends power to the rear wheel through a 6-Speed Cruise Drive transmission. The engine’s fuel consumption is rated at 42 mpg.

Other features worth noting are the optional anti-lock braking system, Harley-Davidson’s Smart Security system, a six-gallon fuel tank and the electronic cruise control.

The bike is offered in a wide range of colors including Vivid Black, Big Blue Pearl, Midnight Pearl, Ember Red Sunglo/Merlot Sunglo.

2014 Harley Davidson Road King

The Harley Davidson Road King was received a series of upgrades for 2014. The new model is more comfortable, better looking and delivers better performances than its predecessor.

The motorcycle is propelled by an air-cooled, 103.1 cu.in. high output Twin Cam 103 engine with integrated oil cooler. For 2014, the engine was slightly modified to deliver more low-end torque, more passing power and a better feedback. In terms of power, the engine cranks out a maximum torque of 104.7 ft-lb at 3,250 rpm and offers a combined fuel economy of 42 mpg.

The air cooled unit sends its power to the ground through Harley’s six speed cruise drive transmission that delivers smooth and quiet shifts.

The motorcycle also comes with new a Reflex Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Linked Brakes, new dual halogen and LED headlamps and fog lamps, brighter Tour Pak lighting, brighter turn signals, brighter brake lights, and a new steering head with stiffer front forks.
