Honda is spewing a supercharged machine for the future
One of the largest motorcycle manufacturer, Honda, is in full gear and firing on all pistons and doing tremendously well in pioneering many great technology and features onto the world streets. The most recent being the development of hydrogen fuel based engines and self-balancing motorcycles.
Now, they are getting busy in a run to stay as the world leaders by developing a supercharged V-Twin motorcycle. As seen on a MoreBikes post, “Honda is planning a new, supercharged motorcycle that will have the power-boosting unit mounted on the left-hand side of the engine. And the new kit will power a host of new motorcycles over the next few years.”
Honda’s new V4 will be designed at the edge of aerodynamics
With the V4 architecture being the flavor of choices, manufacturers are pumping in all their resources to develop a new segment of sportsbike. After the Aprilia RSV4s’ and the latest Ducati V4s’, it looks like it’s going to be Honda’s next move for a new checkmate to be showcased at the 2018 EICMA.
It won’t be a VFR1200 copy, nor a watered down RC213V-S but will create a whole new platform for the Japanese manufacturer. We can see new plans of Honda that might radically rejuvenate the mighty V4s’ that made debut with the VFR750 in 1995, a bike still termed as the ‘best road bike ever built’.
Honda developing the EV-Cub with swappable batteries
Serving 100 million happy customers is a well-achieved milestone for any business, and no other manufacturer but Honda could have made it seem this easy. Being the first two-wheeler to cross such a mark is the Japanese Red Wing’s Super Cub that began its life way back in 1958. As a matter of fact, 2018 bears a distinct significance for the Super Cub, marking its 60th anniversary.
Celebrating this feat, Honda has been planning an electric version of this mighty scooter with the “EV-Cub” showcased first during the 2009 Tokyo Show and the second iteration at the 2015 show. This little scooter is touted to become the first electric production model from Honda to hit the streets and the recent patent images re-stores the same faith.
India becomes the top production base for Honda worldwide.
Honda entered the Indian market in 2001 with two scooters – a segment which was believed to be taking its last breath at the time of their arrival. Against all the odds, both the scooters – Activa and Dio – went on churning a large number of volumes for their parent company, which went on to become the second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the Indian market.
The company has come a long way since then and is on fire to go reach even higher heights. In the process, the Japanese Red has, together with its allied suppliers, invested ₹ 5400 crores ($830.5 million) into the Karnataka plant in Narasapura that just became the biggest two-wheeler manufacturer for Honda in the entire world.
Honda unveils standardized batteries for EVs’
Honda has always been at the forefront of technology and is a major player in the world of automotive solutions. Their recent significant development has been the introduction of electric vehicles onto the market and products and services supporting their sustainability.
Unveiled at the 2018 International CES, Honda showcases their brand new project, the Honda PCX Electric scooter and the replaceable batteries that can be standardized across all their EVs’ churning inside their factories in the future.
Honda might give us a motorcycle that will emit water
If you can by any way refresh your memory, Honda had tied up with GM earlier this year to develop future mobility technologies. The resultant firm called Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC targets the introduction of a new fuel-cell system by the year 2020. It represents the auto industry’s first joint venture formed to mass-produce hydrogen fuel cell systems.
Looks like they are already striking gold. According to the patent (US20170282748A1) images seen here, Honda is making use of the $85-million operation and will be introducing a hydrogen fuel-cell powered motorcycles in the coming future and will have a perimeter frame, telescopic forks, shaft drive and a fuel cell under the seat.
Look ma’, I am floating on air
The four-wheeled cars have it. Airmatic, Airdrive, Air ride, or whatever quirky adjectives they call it with, car mongers love them. Air suspension gives them a ride as though you were literally floating in the air since there does not exist any mechanical part connecting the tires and the body other than pure air.
All this high tech is reserved for four-wheelers for one simple fact, the availability of space. To carry a compressor, rubber bellows, and an air-pump, one needs enough space available in the chassis. Yet, the idea of using the compressibility of air as a spring on two-wheelers is as old as 1910.
Automatic transmission is on the prowl
Automatic vs. Manual has been a hot debate for the four-wheeler segment ever since the first automatic car was born in 1940 by General Motors’ Cadillac. And now, it seems like it will create similar situations in the two-wheeler segment as well. Or would it?
Honda has been at the forefront of new technology and has heavily invested into bringing automatic transmission to everyday motorcycles. It has been a pioneer in developing new forms of gear and clutch designs and is vying to change the dimensions of free riding, starting with the scooters all the way to the mighty Gold-Wing.
Every other major player has their own versions of the same having different acronyms but ultimately does the same job. It seems the manual transmission is well on its slide into obsolescence within the automotive world. And the ones responsible are these folks:
If the new CB1000R is the present, this CB4 ’Interceptor’ is Honda’s future
If you have a crazy sharp memory (won’t blame you if you don’t), Honda had showcased an interesting concept called the ’CB4 Concept’ at the 2015 EICMA. The concept showed us Honda’s capabilities in making a futuristic motorcycle that still gave it a retro appeal.
Fast forward to 2017 and Honda has gone ahead and done just that on a production model, the CB1000R that was launched at the ongoing EICMA. Along with that, Honda has taken the CB4 nameplate and stuck it on another new concept that is futuristic for sure, but also has an evocative ‘Sport Endurance’ tone added to the Cafe-Racer silhouette.

There is no denial in the fact that people will eventually stop filling their vehicles with liquefied dinosaurs and shift to electric. Not because they’ll like it but because there won’t be an option in the future.
So automotive manufacturers have already begun the race to be at the top when that happens, and have kept their workforce busy in spinning out vehicles for that future.
Honda, with a fanbase of 28 million customers all around the world, is just doing that and have showcased their take on this challenge at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show which includes the Honda PCX Electric, the Honda PCX Hybrid and the Honda Riding Assist-e.

Honda’s self balancing motorcycle concept will debut at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show
A major player in the world of artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data, Honda announced their big new project called the “Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem” that is touted to transform the mobility experience of the future and improve customers’ quality of life.
As part of this, Honda first showcased the ’Riding Assist’ concept at the Las Vegas International Consumer Electronics Show (International CES) in January that let the media go crazy with the self-balancing technology it carried.
You could do a ’Look mom, I’m floating on my motorcycle’.
You must have seen sophisticated suspension setups on the expensive four-wheeled counterparts with them having quirky adjectives like airmatic, airdrive or air ride. The reason is as simple as the name is.
This high-tech is reserved for four-wheelers for one simple fact: availability of space. To carry a compressor, rubber bellows, and an air-pump, the motorcycle engineers cannot afford to pan sufficient space within the motorcycle frame and chassis.
Yet, the idea of using the compressibility of air as a spring on two-wheelers is as old as 1910. Fast forward to 2017, a chap in Japan has retrofitted a Honda Grom, a monkey bike from the same makers of the Fireblade. Using it as a suspension unit, he also made away with the side and the center stand and showcased his creation to the world.
Honda and Hitachi enter a joint venture on the electric path.
Honda has always been at the forefront of technology and is a major player in the world of artificial intelligence, robotics and big data. Now fresh new information has cropped up suggesting that the Japanese Red is getting serious about developing electric vehicles and so is being busy partnering with another technocrat, Hitachi Automotive Systems.
As a matter of fact, both these companies had signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year in February and they have escalated those talks by signing in for a joint venture partnership in March. They have christened the JV as Hitachi Automotive Electric Motor Systems, and it will be heeding to develop, manufacture and sales of motors for electric vehicles, both for Honda and other players.
Honda Motor Company comes off as one of the big winners from the recent Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas, Nevada. Specifically, its self-balancing, Riding Assist motorcycle that utilizes Honda’s expertise in robotics to keep the bike upright at a standstill. I admit, that’s a pretty neat gadget, but the forks turn independent of the bars, which has got to feel weird and take some getting used to. That said, this is an extra layer of safety that many will appreciate, and coupled with Honda’s DCT transmission can make for a very good bike for folks with physical challenges.

As I peruse different concept and technology sites in my search for cool motorcycle innovations, things catch my attention and I like to share them with folks of similar interests. Sometimes innovative and creative designs leave me wondering “How did I ever live without this?” Then there’s the rest of the time when I have to wonder “What the Hell were they thinking?” For me, the UNI-CUB by Honda and Halbo from BMW each fit into one of the categories and are certainly interesting enough to share.
