KTM is testing new 690 Enduro and Supermoto

Spyshots show them being tested fully dressed

Introduction of new emission norms last year forced all manufacturers to shelve a few models since they were unviable to have a ramped up production to suit new rules. The Austrian manufacturer, KTM, too had to undergo this process and amongst the many models taken down were the 690 Enduro (title image) and 690 Supermoto.

Luckily, however, it seems like KTM just couldn’t completely let go of these babies and is currently undergoing a full testing phase of their brand new iterations that will conform to new laws. Our friends at MCN managed to snap a few pictures of the Enduro and the Supermoto doing a full production model tests.

2015 - 2017 KTM 690 DUKE ABS

Each version of the Duke since 1994 shed more and more of its vestigial ’dirt bike’ features, and this latest version is a straight-up streetbike. This ride highlights the no-frills pragmatism of the designers with minimal body paneling, exposed frame and afterthought-class rear mudguard. The result is an unimpeded view of the wheels, frame and engine that leaves little to the imagination, and plenty of easy access for maintenance and repairs. Made since 2012, the Duke IV represents the current branch of the family tree, with the 690 Duke serving as the midrange-displacement sibling. Quick and light, the 690 Duke is intended for the entry-level streetbike market.

KTM Recalls 690 Duke for Possible Fuel Leak

KTM Recalls 690 Duke for Possible Fuel Leak

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall on 700+ MY16-17 KTM 690 Duke motorcycles. While KTM hasn’t announced a fix yet, the problem looks like a possible fuel leak around the filler cap. While filling up, we always take care not to dribble the gas on the tank and possibly mar the finish, but it’s a little upsetting that the filler cap may leak and create the conditions that could cause a fire.

KTM Sends Recall Notice For 690 Enduro R Bikes

KTM Sends Recall Notice For 690 Enduro R Bikes

KTM has become the latest motorcycle manufacturer to be forced to take the shameful recall walk after its North American division announced the recall of its 2015 KTM 690 Enduro R motorcycles.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, 409 units of the 2015 690 Enduro R have been tagged with problems to their rear brake line, which could have been damaged during the assembly process. In other words, these bikes rolled out of the production line with this existing problem.

Ever heard of quality control, KTM?

In any case, the affected models were built between November 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015 and the point of concern involves the rear brake line that travels from the ABS pressure modulator to the foot brake cylinder. More specifically, damage to the rear brake line can be caused when it comes into contact with the spring clamp of the crank case ventilation hose.

When this happens, the brake line could get damaged, leading to the loss of rear braking ability, which in turn increases the probability of the bike crashing.

KTM North America is set to notify owners with affected units. Dealerships will likewise stand ready to receive these units where inspections of the crank case ventilation hose clamp’s positioning will determine if they need to be repaired. Should damages to the brake line are found, dealerships will replace them at no cost to the owner.

The company hasn’t announced when the actually recall will begin but owners with affected models, or those who think they have affected models, should keep an eye out for any future announcements.

KTM Issues Recall For 690 Series Bikes

KTM Issues Recall For 690 Series Bikes

It doesn’t matter who you are or what your status is in the motorcycle hierarchy, if there’s a problem with one of your models, it’s going to need to get fixed. That’s the position KTM has found itself in. Apparently, a handful of its 2014-2015 690 Series bikes have issues with their rear brake assembly, which is why the Austrian motorcycle brand announced a worldwide recall of these models, effective immediately.

The affected models belong to KTM’s 690 Enduro R and SMC R models and according to the manufacturer, issues with rear brake assembly and the brake rotors could lead to a loss of braking power for the rear system. That’s not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination. It’s the kind of issue that could have catastrophic consequences should it happen to a rider anywhere.

Turns out, a routine testing in the ongoing production of the models revealed that the bike’s rear ABS brake line has the potential of getting damaged by a spring band clamps found on the engine ventilation tube. Should this happen the bike’s entire brake line could become compromised, potentially leading to a complete loss of brake press in the rear assembly. Once that happens, well, you know where this is going.

If that’s not enough, KTM also discovered that some 2014-2015 690 SMC R models were assembled with a shorter spacer for the front wheel. Such a setup poses another safety risk because a certain number of parts, including the rotor, fork, and ABS sensor, could compromise the bike’s front wheel, leading to a complete malfunction of the front ABS system.

Obviously, these are serious issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible. For its part, KTM is already scheduling free repairs at any of its authorized dealers. Customers with affected units will also be notified by the company directly.
