The Super Duke Engine In An Adventure Chassis

Many adventure-bike manufacturers try to cover all the bases with a single model, but Austrian bikebuilder KTM splits its efforts to produce the 1290 Super Adventure S. Released for MY2017, KTM built the “S” to deliver long-distance comfort for riders who are looking for more than they can get from one of the Dukes. Wind protection, storage options and electronic safety systems take care of the usual ride-ability concerns, but this is a KTM folks, so you know it’s going to be very well-endowed in the power department as well, to the point of qualifying as a ’super’ adventure. Think I’m overstating the situation? Read on and find out how wrong you are.

KTM’s baby 390 Adventure will soon make an entry to the scene

Currently being developed as the 2019 model

The genie was out of the bottle for quite a while now. The Austrian manufacturer has constantly been developing new products to cater its adventurist customers with the latest developments being the 790 Adventure R and the smaller 390 Adventure. The web is now flooded with images of KTM testing their newest creation on roads, and a few grabbed our attention too.

Captured by our good folks at Motorcycle.com, we’re more than glad that KTM has come a long way from exposed frame welds, flat sheet plastic zip-tied bodywork and an information-gathering module in place of the instrument panel.

KTM’s new 790 Adventure R comes out of the dark

In full production clothing, ready to slay the competition

Unveiled to the world along with the production-ready 790 Duke at the 2017 EICMA, the Austrian manufacturer gave us their first hint at the 790 Adventure R Enduro production-prototype motorcycle that is underpinned by the same mechanicals as the Duke.

KTM has since then been teasing us with glimpses of the lightweight enduro motorcycle undergoing testing around the world. Fortunately, it has opened the blanket completely at the European Adventure Rally a few days back to provide an exclusive first look of the model year 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R.

This is how KTM made the day for an al-Qaeda survivor.

The man was held captive since 2011 and was released a couple of months ago.

Imagine you are going on a motorcycle tour from one country to another and you get abducted by the world’s biggest terror organisation, al-Qaeda, in an unknown country and are held captive for six years.

That is exactly what happened to a Swedish national, Johan Gustafsson while he was on a motorcycle trip from Sweden to South Africa in 2011. Now, after his release, he is being donated a brand new adventure motorcycle by his loved ones.

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure R / 1290 Super Adventure T

KTM continues to expand and refine its adventure bike line with its 2017 1090 Adventure R and the 1290 duo, the Super Adventure R and Super Adventure T. Revealed to the world at the 2016 INTERMOT show in Cologne, Germany, these bikes benefit from KTM’s not-inconsiderable experience with off-road bikes and its more recent foray into the world of naked street/superbikes. The engines punch above their weight, and the electronic magic really shows the genius of Austrian engineering, which is a lot like German engineering. (...just with a sense of humor?).

Video: Chris Burch Conquers New Zealand With The KTM 1190 Adventure R

The KTM 1190 Adventure R is considered one of the best off-road bikes in the market for good reason. It has a dynamic suspension, tough wheels and tires, and rugged handling capabilities few bikes in the market can compete with. Red Bull rider Chris Birch knows the 1190 Adventure R all too well and his familiarity with the bike allows him to roughshod over some of the roughest terrain in the South Island of New Zealand with relative aplomb.

Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV created a stunning video of Birch riding the 1190 Adventure R in one of the most beautiful places in the world. You can watch the video and admire the natural beauty of New Zealand or you can watch Birch do some impressive riding stunts in the saddle of the 1190 Adventure R. Either way, I can’t think of a better way to get your week started than to hit play and watch Birch in action as the Belligerents’ “In My Way” is blaring in the background.

The video itself can be interpreted as some kind of advertorial for the KTM 1190 Adventure R. Not that it needs one, but it certainly doesn’t hurt the bike’s credibility when people can watch Birch do some pretty spectacular things with it. Wheelies in the river? Sure. Scale rock walls? No problem. Streak along dirt paths effortlessly? At least give it a challenge.

In any case, I’m done talking about the video. The best way to appreciate it is to watch it, which is why I’m inviting you to do it right now. It’s only a little over three minutes long, and rest assured, it’s three minutes you wouldn’t want to get back.

The baddest bike in the KTM line-up certainly needs no introduction. Not when KTM designers pulled out all the stops to ensure that it keeps its menacing reputation in the industry.

That’s what the 1190 RC8 R is all about. The bike comes loaded with one of the most powerful V2 engines of our times and one of the best chassis in the world. And the best part: the bike is completely street-legal.

The RC8 R not only offers extraordinarily relaxed ergonomics for all its supreme sportiness, but it also comes with more setting options than any other series production super bike, including the footrests, each with two positional variants, the foot levers with variable lever operating angle and lever length, the seats, hand levers, and a two-height adjustable handlebar.

Mechanically speaking, the 1190 RC8 R boasts of an insanely powerful V2 twin-engine that produces a mighty output of 173 horsepower. The KTM engine impresses with an extremely broad rev range and spontaneous throttle response, while supplying supreme ride quality. If you’re looking for reasons as to why the RC8 R has such an impressive engine, look no further than the state-of-the-art cylinder heads with twin plug ignition, flow-optimized ducts and cam follower drive, each with two overhead camshafts for four valves, as well as the electronic Keihin engine management system with twin throttle valves that regulate the modern electronic fuel injection system on the RC8 R. 2012 KTM 1190 RC8 R Track

There’s a reason why the KTM 1190 RC8 R Track is being built in strictly limited numbers for those who want to use their machine exclusively for the racetrack.

Built to be "ready to race" by the KTM Racing Division and packed with all the goodies from the KTM PowerParts range that make the potential for race success even greater, the 1190 RC8 R Track is equipped with everything that has made KTM super bikes so successful then, now, and in the future.

The forged piston structure on the RC8 R Track, borrowed from Formula 1, results in a high piston loading capacity, despite the extremely short and lightweight design. This allows the reciprocating weight to be minimized and the responsiveness and free-revving nature of the engine maximized. It also has a racing seat, a multiple-adjustment racing footrest system, and handlebars that can be mounted at two heights and two angles, with subframes mounted at two heights.

The RC8 R Track is the embodiment of a sports bike that packs plenty of punch, courtesy of its 1190cc V-Twin engine that produces a very tasty 177 horsepower. Considered the measure stick of all things for ultra-sporty twins, the RC8 R Track offers maximum performance, predictable characteristics, and high reliability. The KTM engine impresses with an extremely broad rev range and spontaneous throttle response, while supplying supreme ride quality. It also carries an Akrapovic titanium EVO 4 exhaust system that produces optimum torque levels and power progression, to go with weight savings of almost six kilograms. The main reasons for the outstanding performance of the RC8 R Track’s V-twin with 75° cylinder angle are the ultra-modern cylinder heads with flow-optimized ducts and cam follower drive, each with two overhead camshafts for four valves.

While the standard bike is adequate both for street and off-road riding, this Ice Special that KTM came up with for the motorcycle show in Milan looks perfectly able to take its rider to and from the North Pole. That is because it features studded tires, a crash cage and even microlights in the front, but, as surprised as you may be, this isn’t what caught our attention in the first place. The right rider side of the fairing has a map painted on it, showing that paintjobs aren’t just about looks, but usefulness as well.
