Airbag-Equipped Jeans Now A Reality Thanks To Swedish Inventors

Protect That Posterior!

Airbag technology has been around for a good few years but only for the top half of the body. Now a Swedish company has developed airbag tech for riding jeans.

Airbag-Equipped Motorcycle Riding Pants Are here!

Airbag technology is becoming more and more popular - and affordable - for the everyday motorcycle rider. What was first developed and mandated for racing has trickled down to the average consumer and will only get cheaper as time goes on.

While airbag tech protects the upper body - Shoulders, neck and back, sometimes extending down to abdomen - anything below the waist has been left exposed, apart from protective armour inserted at hips and knees. The reason for this is largely because the upper body is a high-risk area in an impact, whereas leg injuries rarely are fatal.

Mechanically Activated
Unlike airbag vests, jeans airbags triggered with a tether: CO2 canister on the outside

Now a Swedish firm is aiming to be the first to market with the first commercially available motorcycle airbag jeans.

Mo’cycle began development of the jeans airbag technology in 2016, having been leaders in the design and manufacture of riding jeans for many years. A patent was applied for and the jeans have been tested and approved for production and sale, perhaps as early as this year.

Airbag Vest - Under-Jacket
Disadvantage: won’t fit under every jacket. Advantage: won’t move in the event of a crash and slide.

Unlike torso airbags, which rely on electronics to fire the airbag, the Mo’cycle airbag jeans are fired by a mechanical tether. A built-in CO2 canister then inflates the cushion elements. Of course, impact protection is one thing but there is still abrasion resistance to consider. To that end, the jean outer is made with UHMWPE fibres, something the makers claim is 17-times stronger - while being 8-times lighter - than steel.

You might look like you’ve just crapped your pants - which might be true seeing as you’ve just fallen off your bike! - but this is a significant safety development in motorcycle apparel.

Airbag Vest - Over-Jacket
Advantage: can be worn over any jacket. Disadvantage: Risk of it moving in the event of a crash and slide

No official launch date has been given out yet but you can head to the official website for more info as it happens.
