Think the adventure bike category is crowded already? Surely there’s room for just one more?
CFMoto 800MT is a KTM in disguise
Of all the Chinese manufacturers, CFMoto seems to be the one making serious in-roads to world motorcycle markets. Through its tie-in with KTM, it has access to established engines and technology, while KTM gains access to CFMoto’s production know-how.
The first fruits of this partnership, at least as far as CFMoto is concerned is the new 800MT adventure bike. Using the 92bhp, 799cc parallel twin engine from the KTM 790 Adventure, it also carries over the KTM’s slipper clutch, cornering ABS, ride-by-wire throttle and riding modes.
The CFMoto 800MT adds to the 790 Adventure package with cruise control, tyre-pressure sensors and a 7-inch colour TFT dash. It also gets fully adjustable KYB suspension which wasn’t a feature of the 790 Adventure and lowers the seat height to 825mm, down 25mm and 55mm from the 790 Adventure and Adventure R respectively.
Brakes have been changed from Brembo to J.Juan which is definitely a downgrade but stopping power should still be adequate with a twin disc front set up.
Gone are the KTM’s twin saddle tanks, replaced by a conventional tank set up and, if you opt for the Touring specification model, it comes with three-piece luggage, crash bars and hand guards and a centre stand. The Touring also gets a bi-directional quick shifter and spoked wheels. A four year warranty (details unspecified) is pretty good for a Chinese bike.
Pricing has yet to be announced but expect it to be significantly cheaper than the current KTM 890 Adventure. With a KTM-sourced engine and outside supplier components, there shouldn’t be too many issues with quality and reliability, either.
