Love 'em or hate 'em, the Euro 4 homologation rules are in effect and here to stay, and Energica Motor Company->ke4817 has joined the ranks of compliant manufacturers for the 2017 model year. Specs confirmed after the homologation see the Eva and Ego each have boosts in power and torque -- almost a scary thing consider how badass these rides were before. Starting with the more tame stablemate, we have the Eva electric streetfighter->ke3429 that cranks out 108 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, a full seven pound-feet more. The full-on sportbike->ke631 Ego sees a boost up to 145 ponies and 147 pounds o' grunt up from 143 pounds. I would remind readers that as an electric bike, all that grunt is available just after you crack the “throttle,” and so these bikes are ridiculously quick.

What Does It Mean?

Not only does the ruleset demand ABS protection on all rides over 125 cc -- and apparently the electric equivalent thereof -- it also requires all L-class bikes to carry some form of on-board diagnostics. While I'd love to know why the ruling body thinks it so important to run an OBD system, I suppose it doesn't matter since Energica got 'er done. Granted, there can't possibly be as many things that could go wrong, I mean seriously, there just aren't that many moving parts, but now diagnostics are more or less as simple as plugging in your scanner and reading the code. The Euro 5 rules take effect in 2020, so Energica won't be able to rest on its laurels long, but such is life at the top, yeah?
