Electric motors are getting better all the time and this new development from Energica promises more power, lighter weight and greater range. It will be fitted on all new Energicas from now on.

The future of electric-powered motorcycles looking brighter all the time

Based in the automotive heartland of Italy, Modena, Energica is the first Italian manufacturer of high-performance electric motorcycles. They aren’t cheap but they are possessed of fantastic performance, albeit with the restrictions of range ever present.

Now, the company has released details of a new electric motor, which offers improvements in all areas - weight, efficiency, output and range.

The new motor, called the EMCE, has been co-engineered with Italian company Mavel, a research and development business that specialises in electronics.

"Innovation is the main strength of our technical department which, together with Mavel, has found the perfect collaboration to push the limits of current technology, further improving an already high-performing product," said Giampiero Testoni, Chief Technology Officer of Energica.

Mavel’s goal was to minimise energy losses, which they have achieved through software and hardware changes. They claim a power increase of 34bhp, from 134bhp to 168bhp, while saving 10kg in weight and increasing range by 10%. Swapping oil-cooling for liquid-cooling gives more consistent performance.

The development work was completed in just six months and the new motor will now be standard fitment on all current production Energicas.

Expect more news of this sort as the relentless development of electric-powered motorcycles continues at an ever-increasing rate.
