Until the advent of the G310, BMW was sorely lacking in beginner-enticing models and even that model hasn't quite hit the spot with young buyers. Now BMW has revealed the CE02 Concept, which is an electric bike aimed squarely at the youth market. It even comes with a built-in skateboard!

BMW CE02 Concept Revealed

BMW appears to have consciously ignored the business of attracting new, young customers to the fold for the whole of its existence and it's a strategy that's worked for them up to now.

However, two things have happened in recent years. Firstly, the motorcycling population is getting older and the young aren't showing much interest in bikes. Secondly, the electric bike is gaining in popularity and, with deadlines for the sale of ICE-equipped cars and bikes looming ever closer, necessity.

The electric bike and the technology involved is seen as one way of enticing fresh blood into motorcycling. The youth of today are much more conscious of the need to protect the environment - after all, it is they who will be living in it, not us creaky old farts.

BMW has been busy on the electric front recently and the CE02 concept is a blatant attempt to appeal to the kids.

Running on 15-inch wheels, it has a top speed of 55mph and a range of about 55 miles, more than enough for the teenager who doesn't like to be too far from their bedroom at any one point.

The CE02 Concept could in all likelihood be easily put into production and might just be the funky bike to grab the recently-licensed rider who isn't necessarily into cross-country rides but wants something cool to tackle the urban jungle.

The only problem that we can see is that the kids will probably complain that the skateboard has the wrong wheels or something tenuous like that!

A spokesman for BMW had this to say:

“We wanted to develop an easily accessible two-wheeler for everyone who wants to be mobile and independent. The BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 is a reliable companion on a day-to-day basis. You love it because it’s always there for you and it just works – even if you occasionally don't treat it as carefully as you might. And there are stickers, tapes and other forms of customisation that make it quite clear to everyone that it belongs to you. It embodies youthful freedom and a carefree spirit – rather like a skateboard on two wheels.”

One thing BMW appears to be determined to continue with is terribly dull and Teutonic BMW personnel talking about the bikes in video chats with a motorcycling journalist. It's about the last thing a teenager wants to spend half an hour watching. If you're feeling strong (or bored) you can watch it at the link below.

However, all criticism aside, this looks really funky and cool and BMW has to be applauded for thinking outside the box and considering the next generation of riders.
