• If Ducati makes a mid-weight SuperSport, this is how it will look

OBIBOI gives us this rendering tickling our brains

The history of Ducati is driven by a unique engineering talent that has always generated motorcycles of unmistakable design and most profound sporting spirit. Throughout their 90 years, the Bologna firm has created machines showcasing passion, emotions, and excellence. Be it their Panigales’, Scramblers’ or the very recent SuperSport 939. But the Italian maker hasn’t had any footfall in the mid-segment supersport arena because they pretty much did not give a damn.

But imagining them do it is going to bring a lot of sleepless nights to the Japanese players who have taken the top slots to the throne in the 600cc-800cc segment. There are no official word or snippets from anywhere suggesting this might happen, but this did not stop our friend Oberdan Bezzi to sketch this potent machine that can come out of the Borgo Panigale factory gates.

They say that the mid-segment supersport segment is a dying breed, but I say it is a bullish argument to make since the few blokes in the industry who believe that the idea of the 600s’ is vanishing are all drunk on booze. The main reason for them to rant was the departing of Honda’s famous CBR600RR, with no supersport replacement in sight, and the global recession playing a significant role in it for them not developing one.

But faith was restored by the other Japanese honchos with machines like the Yamaha YZF-R6, Kawasaki ZX-6R and Suzuki GSX-R600 having raked up great sales and have been ruling the segment ever since. But how would you like a Ducati badged 800cc machine entering the competition?

Underpinned by the Scrambler Icon’s powertrain and chassis, the “Ducati Superdesmo R Concept” as OBIBOI calls it, gets to be the lightweight amalgamation having classic half-fairing design and top-spec equipment list like Ohlins’, Brembos’ and Akrapovic. With the 2018 MotoGP Livery on the swoopy curves and lines, this rendering sure does manage to excite the aphrodisiac in me.

Making use of the air-cooled Scrambler mill, Ducati will definitely tweak it to extract a few more horses out of the 803cc motor giving it the upper hand in the competition. With the potent engine, race slick tires and the lightweight tubular steel Trellis frame, this Superdesmo R Concept can become a fancy add-on to the Ducati family.

For Ducati, this motorcycle solves a problem that never existed. But we like to believe there is a need for it to get onto our streets, to take on the dying breed of Supersport motorcycles.
