The Kawasaki Ninja 650 was one of the first entrants in the now-populated versatile full-faired 600-700cc segment. A lot has changed in its 17-year-long life and the mid-spec Ninja even gained traction control for 2023.

Today’s focus, though, is on performance, particularly just how fast the Ninja 650 can go in a straight line. Before diving in, though, let’s take a look at some numbers.

Kawasaki Ninja 650 Employs A 649cc Engine

Under its undeniable Ninja design, the motorcycle hides a 649cc, twin-cylinder engine thumping out 68PS (67 horsepower) and 64Nm. The power reaches the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox, while the entire package weighs 423 pounds (191kg). Though this is the curb weight, it isn’t exactly lightweight for a 650.

Now that you know the numbers, watch the video below for the Ninja 650’s top speed:

Top Speed Says

So the Kawasaki Ninja 650 (this is the 2022 model, by the way) maxes out at 212kmph (131mph) which should keep new riders more than happy. Surprisingly, though, this is nearly 20kmph (12mph) slower than the Yamaha R7’s top speed}, even though the latter only has 5 horsepower more.

So why is the Ninja much slower? Well, because of weight and aerodynamics. The R7 is 9 pounds (4kg) lighter and has a more aerodynamic design than the Ninja. These, coupled with the extra power, help the Yamaha churn out a higher top speed.

What makes matters worse is that the Ninja visibly struggles after 185kmph and simply crawls to its top speed, even after posting an impressive 0-100kmph time of under 4.2 seconds.
