In recent times, KTM has kept people like us pretty busy, thanks to multiple model updates throughout its arsenal, and it has no plan to stop anytime soon. The latest motorcycle to receive an update is the company’s supermoto specialist, the 450 SMR, which gets several fine but fundamental tweaks to help it shed crucial tenths off lap times.

KTM 450 SMR Updated For 2023

The foremost aspect of talking is the engine. With the focus on mass centralization, KTM has rotated the 449cc engine towards the rear and equipped it with new cylinder internals, revised crankshaft, and a repositioned sprocket. Consequently, the engine pumps out 63 horsepower (quite insane for a 450cc mill) while weighing 1 pound less than before.

The engine comes mated to the redesigned five-speed gearbox by PANKL, featuring a quickshifter and Suter slipper clutch as standard. Making the whole package ever-so-modern is a new Keihin Engine Management System with traction control, two engine maps, and even launch control, all accessible via new backlit switchgear.

Next, we shift focus to the chassis. For the 2023 model year, the 450 SMR benefits from a new hydro-formed, laser-cut chassis derived from the recently unveiled KTM SX series. KTM claims it has altered the longitudinal and torsional flex by tweaking the wall thickness, while also using a lighter polyamide-reinforced two-piece subframe and adjusting the rear shock mount.

This brings us to the suspension. The rear monoshock is a shorter, lighter version of the WP XACT unit and works in conjunction with extra-beefy 48mm WP AER forks. The forks get split-damping and don’t require any tools for fiddling around. Wrapping off the chassis are 16.5/17-inch (F/R) spoke wheels with Metzeler slicks, clamped by Brembo brakes at both ends.

For the final set of changes, KTM has reworked the seat, handlebar, and the toothed footpegs for a more commanding riding position. Similarly, you also get a refreshed livery with loud Ready To Race graphics and a hint of purple, inspired by KTM’s 1990 models.

2023 KTM 450 SMR Pricing & Availability

At the moment, KTM has introduced the updated 450 SMR in European markets at €12,515. However, since the 2022 450 SMR was on sale here, expect the 2023 model to set foot here too.

With all the said updates, the 450 SMR is arguably one of the best supermoto bikes an enthusiast can get his/her hands on. But make sure you have a closed track nearby, as this isn’t road-legal.
