KTM 890 Adventure Redesign Includes Road-Only Model

890 Adventure S Mirrors 1290 Adventure S in being road-focussed

KTM updates the three-year-old 890 Adventure platform. What started as the 790 Adventure in 2019 was updated to the 890 Adventure in 2021. For the 2023 model year, further changes to the looks and a new road-biased model are in the pipeline.

2023 KTM 890 Adventure Update
The last update in 2021 upped engine capacity to 889cc from 799cc. Latest update concentrates on looks and weather protection

KTM certainly doesn’t sit still. Even though the 790 Adventure was introduced in 2019, 2023 will see the second major update for the model.

In 2021, the 790 was replaced by the 890 models, with an 889cc engine replacing the 799cc engine of the 790. The styling was left unchanged with the increase in engine size and it is this that will be addressed in 2023. Also on the cards is a road-biased ’S’ model to run alongside the 890 Adventure and Adventure R.

Road Biased Model
Taking the lead from the 1290 Adventure S, it looks like the 890 range will be boosted with a road-biased 890 Adventure S with road wheels and tyres

Prototypes have been spied testing and the main difference will be in the shape of a new fairing, which will incorporate the redesigned screen and headlight in a more unified package, with the fairing extending to meet the fuel tank. This latter piece remains the same: two low-mounted saddle tanks either side of the engine with a filler cap in the traditional location in front of the rider. A bash plate protects the underside of the engine and extends to the bottom of the petrol tanks.

The headlight remains the same and, as before, the ’R’ version gets a lower screen than the base Adventure and, presumably, the ’S’ model. We say ’presumably’ as the model on test has not screen at all, although the brackets to hold it are in place.

Screen Changes
Screen and headlight now extend into each other. Fairing extends downwards to meet the saddle petrol tanks and bash plate

The 890 Adventure (base model) gets the high-mounted, MX-style mudguard that was previously only seen on the 890 R. The addition of the 890 S allows the 890 Adventure to be more off-road in style with the 890 Adventure R will be the all-singing hardcore off-road model.

The 890 Adventure S follows the arrival of the 1290 Adventure S and will be more of an adventure Touring bike, with 17-inch alloy rims at both ends, wearing road tyres. It looks as if WP Apex suspension is fitted to the 890 Adventure and Adventure S, while the Adventure R gets the higher-spec WP Xplor suspension. The rest of the frame, subframe and seat looks to be carried over from the existing models.

Suspension
890 Adventure S and 890 Adventure get WP Apex suspension, 890 Adventure R gets higher spec WP Xplor.

The exhaust system on all three bikes suggests no changes to the engine, even though a 990cc version of the LC8c parallel twin has been rumoured. Could we see the larger engine in a naked Duke model or even a faired sportsbike RC model?

Expect the revised 890 Adventure range to be officially announced later in the year, for a 2023 introduction.
