Lego ramps up the nostalgia with a scale model of the iconic Vespa scooter, celebrating 75 years of Italian chic

Lego Vespa to sit alongside your Lego BMW S1000RR in your miniature garage

Is a superbike too much for you? Do you prefer the slower pace of life that a scooter gives you? Or are you simply in love with that icon of Italian chic, the Vespa?

Lego has released some brilliant motorcycle models recently - Ducati Panigale V4 and BMW S1000RR - and for its latest release, it is slowing things down with a scale model of the Vespa.

Finished in an authentic-looking pastel blue colour, the model was developed in close collaboration with Piaggio, the owners of the Vespa brand. They have even captured the smooth curves of the original extremely well, not something that can always be said of Lego models which are, of necessity, sometimes rather blocky.

Lego has nailed the detail and the model features single-sided front suspension, a twin seat, a kickstand and working steering. Remove one of the side panels and there is a small Lego engine! to add some period colour, there is also a 1960s Italian licence plate, an open-face crash helmet and, amusingly, a plastic bouquet of flowers to sit in the 'wicker' basket on the back.

Comprising 1,106 bricks, the finished model measures 22cm long, 12cm high and 35mm wide and is, it has to be admitted, rather cute.

It is also, it has to be said, for adults and display only: it is unlikely it would stand up to the rigours of being played with. But, it will make a pretty addition to your scale garage, sitting alongside your two superbikes and perhaps your Aston Martin DB5.
