Built to look like Lucas’ creation, the Speeder Bike from Vintage Works rides on a hubless front wheel (way cool) and a pneumatic suspension system that raises and lowers the chassis to simulate the bike lifting up to a hover. As if that wasn’t enough, the ride makes Star Wars-like noises as it powers up and down for complete nerd immersion. (And I mean that in the best possible way.)

The builders say the parts cost more than a new Ferrari, so don’t expect to see this ride on a showroom floor near you — just enjoy it for the piece of whimsy, work of art and showcase of skill that it is.

Vintage Works out of Suamico, Wisconsin, does all kinds of interesting things for its customers. From restoring antique machines to creating new rides from the ground up, the company sports all crafts and machinery needed for custom fabrication. In addition to being passionate about custom work, someone (or several someones) at the company is a serious Star Wars fan who remembers the Speeder Bike chase scenes from Return of the Jedi at least as fondly as I do. I’ll bet the bike’s designer, Paul Nelson, is a geek like me and I say that in the best possible way.

To be honest, I was actually a little disappointed when I found out the thing had wheels, but after a little reality check I took a good look and decided that what they did have was still cooler than the other side of the pillow. Awesome!

Oh and, may the force be with you. Always.
