Established in 2014, Sur-Ron is a 40-person Chinese firm that aims to build high-performance electric motorcycles and bikes. For their second installment, the company has launched a sub $3000 electric commuter motorcycle for the proletariats and the urban masses who love traveling on two wheels all-day to work.

Called as the “White Ghost”, it comes with first-in-class features and styling to go about the cement forest without having to care any less about polluting it. Specked out with a decent battery-motor combo, the White Ghost is best suitable for short runs within the urban jungle.

You will be surprised at the list of features the White Ghost comes with given it being light on the wallet. It has been styled progressively with sharp lines and curves looking fresh and out of the box. The “Transformer” styled front face and the fairings give it a sporty take on a regular commuter motorcycle.

An upright riding position helps swiftly twist and turn around towns, and the suspension setup is set suitable to absorb street irregularities like bumps and potholes with ease. The “fuel tank” is a large storage space having a portable toolkit and enough area to carry most of your belongings with you. Thanks to the non-requirement to host any combustible fluids there.

Being an urban runner, the White Ghost is more practical than your average gasoline commuter with features like keyless fob that can do multiple things like flashlight attention, vehicle locating, and open storage box apart from the ignition. Then there is this high contrast negative display LCD instrumentation having a futuristic User Interface. You also get a Bluetooth speaker for calls and music.

This probably is the first electric bike that I wish to talk more about the LED light setup it gets. The front headlamp unit is one of the best-looking ones in the business that gets two projector LED lamps and two DRL’s flanked on either side. They call it the “Soul-Eye”. The signal indicator LEDs’ are 360-degree flashes allowing more visibility. At the rear, the LED strips go underneath the seats and combine both as brake and indicating lights.

Then they have a swanky feature called the “Atmosphere lights” that throw lights from inside of the fairings onto the neon-green. Sun-Ram says that “the cold tone lighting creates the different riding technological feeling”. I, for one, don’t really know what that is, but sure sounds cool and looks awesome. The bike also comes with inclining lights that illuminate the curved road when the bike senses a bend, making the riding to be much safer. Fancy.

The powertrain here is not as impressive as the ones on Zeros’ or the Alta’s. However, the 10 kilowatts motor produces roughly 13.4 horsepower and takes the White Ghost to a decent 60+ mph top speed. The 4.2-kilowatt hour, 60-volt battery will last for a little of 60 miles and takes 3 hours for a full charge.

You get three riding modes: Economy, Sport and a “Turbo” that gives in 20% more power only for 20 seconds. But will drastically decrease the battery range. Best kept for short bursts within the city then. The Nylon explosion-proof box structure of the battery and every other electric component gets IP67 ultra-high level of waterproof.

The White Ghost is the first electric motorcycle with a two-speed, dual-clutch DSG automatic gearshift system coming out of any Chinese factory. The aluminum chassis has a bionic design concept that allows Sur-Ron to develop motorcycles for different segments in the future.

For now, the White Ghost is still undergoing government and regulatory approval for sales in regions outside of its native China, and when that happens, we hope Sur-Ron pulls a rabbit out of the hat and brings it to our shores. It looks stylish, has plenty of practicality, and a small yet decent powertrain for short runs. Perfect for us city dwellers. And with the reasonable price point, a lot is going on for this new kid on the block.
