Top Fuel Dirt Drag Racing

It constantly amazes me at the variety of sports we come up with when given an engine and a set of wheels. On Any Sunday, the best movie about motorcycling ever made, covered many of them in all their bewildering variety.

But the movie missed this one, maybe because it didn’t exist then. That it exists now gives me eternal hope for the survival of the human race; if we can come up with this, then we can come up with anything that will help us survive wars, pestilence, plague and global warming.

The sport is Top Fuel Dirt Drag Racing. I have no doubt that it came about because a farmer had a Top Fuel Drag Bike and an unused field. Unable to find the time to head to his local drag strip, he merely laid out a couple of hundred metres strip across the field and stuck lots of blocks of rubber to his slick rear tyre and gave it a go.

Or maybe they had a bunch of hill-climb enthusiasts but no hills so had to settle with going as fast as possible in a straight line.

All his farmer friends though this was a good idea and built their own machines and joined him for a dirt-spraying day of fun.

What a brilliant idea!
