Buell's reinvention set to continue as the company plans to launch two new bikes at the 2022 Daytona Bike Week in early March.

Buell Supertouring 1190 and Baja DR dirt bike to be launched

After the announcement of the Buell Hammerhead 1190 last year, the American company has announced that it will be launching two new models at the 2022 Daytona Bike Week on 5th March, continuing the revival of the brand.

12 years ago, then-owners Harley Davidson discontinued the brand, although founder Erik Buell continued under the name Erik Buell Racing, or EBR. This lasted six years before the company filed for receivership.

The revived company announced a new version of the old 1190 RX sports bike and called it the Hammerhead in 2021 and now the Supertouring 1190 and Baja DR will be joining the line-up.

Buell is calling the Supertouring 1190 the 'world's fastest touring bike,' with the likes of the BMW R1250RT, KTM 1290 Super Duke GT and others firmly in its sights. Powered by the company's 1190cc v-twin engine, developing 185bhp and 101lb.ft. of torque, it certainly has the credentials to play in the same league as its rivals. Computer-generated renders show an angular, squared-off design, although its uncertain as to whether the real thing will retain this look.

An initial price tag of $21,995 has been announced, although accessorising it with touring accessories will push that price up. At the launch, a deposit of just $25 will secure a reservation once production starts.

“We’ve taken the Buell DNA customers know and love, and applied to the performance touring segment, developing a topline touring bike that will lead the American market in speed, handling and performance,” said Bill Melvin, CEO of Buell Motorcycle Co.

“The Buell SuperTouring 1190 is a next level touring bike with designs that will bring excitement back to American touring motorcycles! Plus, in spite of supply chain headwinds, it’s on target for production to start this fall!”

Being launched alongside the Supertouring 1190 will be the Baja DR (Dune Racer) which Buell is touting as the 'world's fastest production dirt bike'. Slated for a 2023 introduction, it will be powered by a 175hp 72-degree V-twin engine with 101Ib-ft of torque, trellis frame and adjustable swing arm for a 66” to 70” wheelbase.

“This is a pivotal moment for American motorcycles and really puts Buell on the map. We are on track to build the world’s fastest and solely American-built production off road bike.

“Less than 1% of the world is covered with pavement, the Buell Baja DR is designed to dominate the other 99.7%. It will give riders the freedom to go anywhere in the world, faster and with more power, harnessing our 1190 engine.

“The Buell Baja DR is a beast, elevating the brand to even greater heights, and will bring passion back for American-built motorcycles.”

Quite what Buell thinks has been happening to the American motorcycle in the years since the name was taken off new bike listings isn't clear as both Indian and Harley Davidson have not been shy in breaking into new markets but you have to admire Buell's ambitions. We can only hope that the new company lasts longer than the old!
