There are drag races and there are drag races: this is one of the latter. Take two of the fastest and most expensive hypercars and one of the most expensive and fastest hyperbikes, go to an airstrip and put pedal to the metal. Let battle commence.

Drage Race Royalty: McLaren P1 vs. Porsche 918 Spyder vs. Ducati 1199 Superleggera

They are three of the most desirable vehicles on the planet and not ones that mere mortals like us are ever likely to drive or ride: we've probably got more chance of going to the moon!

McLaren's P1 was introduced to the world in 2013 and was the last word in technology. Built largely from carbon fibre and featuring a hybrid drive train, which produced a combined 900bhp and 665lb.ft of torque. 0-60mph came up in 2.7 seconds and it would top out at 217mph. It cost $1,150,000 when new, 375 were built and they sold out immediately.

Porsche's 918 Spyder also debuted in 2013 and promised virtually identical figures to the McLaren. Also featuring a hybrid drivetrain, it produced a combined 875bhp and a whopping 944lb.ft of torque, propelling it from 0-62 in 2.6 seconds with a top speed of 218mph. 918 were built and it was a relative bargain at $945,000.

Ducati pulled in MotoGP technology for its 1199 Superleggera in 2014. Using exotic materials such as magnesium, carbon fibre and titanium, it weighed 177kg with all liquids on board. Its 1198cc V-twin engine produced a claimed 200bhp and 100lb.ft of torque. It cost $65,000.

So, three of the most extreme - and expensive - vehicles head-to-head on the drag strip. Which would prove to be the fastest?

Off the line, the Porsche's four-wheel-drive gives it the edge but the Ducati soon overhauls it to pull out a lead. As speeds approach 200mph, the McLaren then reels in the Ducati and overtakes it for the win. Why? Well, it probably has something to do with aerodynamics: the car is just more slippery than the bike.

So, there you have it: the most expensive car vs. bike drag race ever and a victory, for once, to the car.
