  • Buell Blast From 2000-2009, the Blast was the perfect intro to the Buell brand. Will new Buell go the same route?

Some Directions are obvious, others perhaps not-so-obvious

Buell Motorcycles has announced it will be commencing production of the Hammerhead sports bike on November 1st, 2021. The rejuvenated company will certainly be planning new models, but in which direction will they be heading?

Buell 1190 Super Touring Concept
Buell has to be considering playing in the adventure segment. This concept was released earlier in 2021

With the announcement that the Buell Hammerhead will be going into production on November 1st, 2021, speculation turns to what might be coming next from America’s maverick motorcycle manufacturer.

The Hammerhead is essentially the old EBR 1190SX given a mild facelift, remaining the same under the skin. New models will undoubtedly use this platform while there could be completely new models as well.

No manufacturer worth its salt is likely to ignore the adventure market and Buell cannot afford to be any different. Earlier this year, the Buell 1190 Super Touring was shown which had definite adventure DNA as well as distinct Buell DNA in the form of the frame, swing arm and rim-mounted front disc brake. This is one model we can expect to be given high priority in the coming months.

A Naked Hammerhead?
Naked versions of sports bikes are popular and an easy model to create.

Another market segment that is booming at the moment is the naked sports bike class so expect Buell to take a set of tools to the Hammerhead to create a naked version of that bike.

Rumours are also circulating about two rather more surprising developments.

Buell Blast
From 2000-2009, the Blast was the perfect intro to the Buell brand. Will new Buell go the same route?

It seems that the ’Blast’ name will be resurrected on a new bike suitable for beginner riders. The original Blast, produced between 2000 and 2009, had a 492cc single-cylinder motor and it would be important for the new Buell concern to adopt a similar strategy to attract a new, younger audience.

A Buell Cruiser?
A large cruiser might not fit into the Buell DNA of innovation, but it could make sense as an American motorcycle manufacturer. Don’t expect it to look like this!

But it is the other rumour that is setting tongues wagging. This rumour has Buell going head-to-head with former parent company Harley Davidson and producing a cruiser! Quite why a company with a history of innovation and radical thinking would want to try and compete in the hugely traditional cruiser market is anyone’s guess but, if you look at the size of that particular market not only in the U.S. but worldwide, maybe it would make sense for an American motorcycle manufacturer to produce a quintessentially American motorcycle. Expect it to incorporate some different thinking, however.

The story of the new Buell Motorcycle Company is just beginning and it promises to be an interesting ride.
