Not everyone is blessed with height, meaning they can ride any motorcycle out there. Many riders, especially women, are simply too short to comfortably and confidently ride a bike on which they can't touch the floor while seated on the bike. This list from German magazine Motorrad list over 100 bikes and their suitability for short riders.

I am not very tall: what bikes can I ride?

So you're vertically challenged: in other words, you're short of stature. Nothing to be ashamed of: some of us are tall, some of us are short and there's not much we can do about it.

However, when it comes to riding motorcycles, height plays a large part in deciding what bikes we can ride. If you're lucky enough to be tall, then the entire motorcycling world is at you command: swing your leg over anything and head off into the sunset.

If, however, you're not blessed in the height department, all is not lost. There are still dozens of bikes that you can choose from that you can ride and, more importantly, put your feet down to the ground when you stop. Control when moving is one thing: control when stationary is another thing entirely and can make or break a person's desire to ride.

So, what to do? Well, you could visit every single dealer and try every bike to determine which bikes fit you. If you're lucky, there might be a motorcycle show such as EICMA or Intermot happening near you and you can spend a day or two trying every bike you can, as it appears the journalist in question has done; although she has undoubtedly ridden a lot of them as well.

Or, you can look through this list from German motorcycling magazine, Motorrad. They are lucky enough to have a journalist - Dina Dervisevic - working for them who is a mere 5'1" tall. Over the years, she has compiled a list of motorcycles that she can sit on and reach the floor with both feet, with one foot, which motorcycles are not suitable at all and so on.

It's brilliant. OK, it's in German but there is such a thing as Google Translate so, while it takes a little bit of effort to decipher what is being said, if you're serious about finding a motorcycle that is right for you, it's actually not all that much bother.

And it's been written by someone who faces the same problems as you and not simply by someone going through every manufacturers' catalogue and noting down the seat height. As the author explains, such factors as foot peg placing can affect a rider, no matter how low the seat.

Of course, you could just tell the short rider to go out and buy a cruiser such as a Harley Davidson or Indian but maybe that isn't their kind of riding? What if they want to go adventure riding or sports bike riding? It's no good telling them that just because they're short they are limited to only one type of bike.

So, sit yourself down with a glass of something warming and spend the last few days of winter doing some research so you can head out and find the motorcycle of your dreams knowing that it will fit you in time for those balmy summer days' riding.
