With the Z900RS doing great business for Kawasaki, it would make sense to take the parallel twin engine from the Z650 and put it into a retro-styled model to cash in on the booming modern classic segment.

Entry Level Retro Middleweight

Kawasaki has scored a home run with the Z1-inspired Z900RS so it would make perfect sense to continue the theme and expand their modern classic range to attract new customers.

The modern Z650 uses a punchy 69bhp parallel twin engine and competent chassis that is more than a match for the class-leading Yamaha MT-07. What could be easier than to slap retro-inspired styling onto it to make a beginner-friendly modern classic?

It is likely that the styling would mirror that of the Z900RS, meaning a teardrop fuel tank, round headlights and clocks and a flat two-seater seat. Like the Z900RS, it would be an attractive mixture of old and new - classic looks and modern technology - which has worked so well for every manufacturer who has entered this segment.

Mind you, these rumours have been circulating for a year or so already but they seem to have gained extra traction recently, possibly with a view to launching this Autumn for a 2022 release date.
