Shortly after hosting the latest round of the 2015 World Superbike Championship->ke2195 season, the management team of the track announced that it had extended its WSBK hosting duties for another four years, putting the legendary Italian race track in the WSBK calendar until 2019.

The agreement was reached by officials from Dorna WSBK and Misano, all of whom can now move on knowing that the track will remain in the series calendar, adding to the already long and esteemed 23-year history of hosting the WSBK.

In fact, only two race tracks - Phillip Island in Australia and Assen in the Netherlands - have hosted more WSBK rounds than Misano. That’s esteemed company that the Italian track will continue to be a part of.

The Misano track is also considered as a favorite among motorcycle racers, not just those who compete in the World Superbike Championship. it’s continued involvement in the series should be a boon for WSBK riders.

Judging by the excitement of the recently concluded round just last weekend - shout out to Max Biaggi’s dramatic comeback! - I’ll venture a guess that this extension between Dorna and Misano is just a temporary one that will lead to a longer extension down the road.

Both sides seem to be happy doing business with one another so there’s no reason why this partnership doesn’t continue past 2019.

Why it matters

As I said, the Misano race track belongs in that rare group of tracks that also includes Phillip Island and Assen as the three most important tracks in the World Superbike Championship. That’s my opinion and I’m basing it largely on the history all three race tracks have had with the series since it was created back in 1988.

It’s important to have Misano remain part of the WSBK calendar and I don’t think I’m the only one with that sentiment. Other fans share it too. Riders and teams will tell you the same thing.

This extension should provide more thrills and spills to the long history of excitement whenever the WSBK races in this iconic Italian race track. I’m happy that we get to see four more years of it in the racing calendar, but if you we’re to ask me, I would’ve negotiated for a longer contract.

That’s the kind of reverence I have for WSBK racing at the Misano race track. You can’t have one without the other at this point.
