Yamaha has come up with a very ingenious system which will mark the begining of a new era: Yamaha self steering motorcycles.

Yamaha’s engineers have no time for rest as they are working to create a bike which steers itself. They came up with the idea and then started to imagine how the bike will look, ride and feel on the road but most important if it will be safer then ordinary bikes.

Yamaha developed the concept by using a headstock and front end that rotates longitudinally about the main frame on a simple bearing. Also, a very important feature is the torsion spring which holds the two parts in the normal geometry arrangement under normal riding with the intervention of electronics system when the bike begins to stray out of line.

The bike’s position on the road will be determined by a lean angle sensor and sensors on either side of the bike which will be linked with the bike’s speedometer and advanced CPU to determine if the machine is in danger of veering off the road and then taking actions to prevent the accident.

A very clever safety net will encourage the rider to make those quick shoulder checks without changing course. They will achieve that by using hydraulic pumps which operate on the frame’s pivoting point, moving the front and rear wheels out of line. By doing that, the front wheel will try to stay upright and the rear wheel will move out of line. For a left turn, the rear of the bike will be pivoted to move the rear wheel to the left, the same thing being applied for right steering.

They project is under development so there is a lot of work still to be done. Being a new idea, there will be a lot of testing and problems to solve until we’ll have the opportunity to see an actual prototype.
