The electric revolution for the urban dwellers

A greater deal of thought is gone into using alternative sources to power our vehicles, and one such attempt is made by the Indian start-ups that are striving for a greater cause. There has never been a better time to introduce zero-emission vehicles that cater to a larger mass of bikers and commuters alike. There hasn’t been a lot of success stories on this front, but things have now started to change for good.

India’s first avatar of an indigenously designed and developed electric motorcycle by a Pune based start-up is the first commercial zero-emission motorcycle of the country. Being the biggest two-wheeler market in the world, this was a no-brainer. Specked out with a decent battery-motor combo, the T6X is best suitable for short runs within the urban jungle.

STYLING

High raised tank design
features include DRLs, Anti-theft, geo-fencing, helmet lock and a 12 V charging dock

A first look at the motorcycle and one cannot make out any tell-tale signs of a ‘green bike’. It looks and feels like any contemporary sub 200cc motorcycle. But that is where the comparisons end. The in-house design is a rather aggressive take compared to the rest of the breed. Tork has given an insensitive approach to this T6X with custom designed components and panels.

A high raised tank design whose only feature is to tuck away the BMS (Battery Management System) known at TIROS under which lies the array of batteries and the motor. A space where otherwise liquefied dinosaurs make power. Same lines continue all the way back to the tail section which houses the LED tail light cluster. Neat.

An inbuilt on board GPS system will also be provided to the rider via a 4.3” TFT display instrument cluster which also will give you a wide array of battery and charge information which can also be communicated through a smartphone app. Other notable features include DRLs, Anti-theft, geo-fencing, helmet lock and a 12 V charging dock.

Clubbed with a host of exciting features, the T6X will have many firsts to its credit in the two-wheeler segment like onboard navigation, storage, cloud connectivity, full digital display, and performance.

Powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries
Compact 6KW (8 hp) DC electric motor giving 20 lb-ft torque

Power comes from a compact 6KW (8 hp) DC electric motor sourced from a pack of lithium-ion batteries. The most interesting feature of this setup is the capability of traveling all the way up to 62 miles without a sweat. And the availability of 20 lb-ft of instant torque is a blessing in disguise for the city streets. And it is a feeling one cannot explain but only experienced.

Charging the batteries full is in a matter of a couple of hours, and an 80% dash will come in just one hour. The company claims that the battery can survive healthily for up to 50,000 – 65,000 miles.

Tork developed this bike on the legendary Isle of Man TT island course and has also got podium finishes at the 2009 Isle of Man TTX-GP and 2010 TTX-GP Championship. Again in 2012, it sprints the 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds at the 400-meter drag race-demo run at the Valley Run.

A signature system made by Tork is the TIROS (Tork Intuitive Response Operating System) that allows the rider to easily switch between ride modes if and when you decide to go sporty or just cruise along. It also learns the way you ride and calculates power management and analysis for every rider. The system also carries the capability to be updated over the air and add features as and when they become available by the manufacturer. A new age of digital cloud connectivity.

Custom trellis frame chassis
weighs at 286 lbs

T6X will sport a custom trellis frame chassis which is just the perfect backbone for a commuter. Because it has only one moving part, your trips to the mechanic will be close to nil. The best part of all this is that the motorcycle weights just 286 lbs in spite of all those batteries; which makes it quite nimble and agile on its feet.

With minimal moving parts, the rider will be ensured of the least possible corrosion, wear and tear, sound or vibration, commuting through the traffic will be a breeze as you don’t have to actuate any clutch lever as such.

Telescopic forks suspension

Suspension duties will be taken by telescopic forks at the front and hydraulic with spring load at the rear. The bike will run on 17-inch alloy wheel sporting tubeless CEAT Zoom XL tires. Front and rear disc braking with ABS and CBS is a standard issue braking system.

All of this coordinates with very specific strength, weight, and stiffness goals to produce the best-handling motocrosser ever made.

Showing the world how to do it right all this while, the folks have upped their game for 2018. To get new riders hooked onto the electric revolution, Zero brings in the DS ZF14.4 beginner-friendly e-model for Europe. Stylish lines and curves

Established in 2014, Sur-Ron is a 40-person Chinese firm that aims to build high-performance electric motorcycles and bikes. For their second installment, the company has launched a sub $3000 “White Ghost” electric commuter motorcycle for the proletariats and the urban masses who love traveling on two wheels all-day to work.

The powertrain here is not as impressive as the ones on Zeros’ or the Alta’s. However, the 10 kilowatts motor produces roughly 13.4 horsepower and takes the White Ghost to a decent 60+ mph top speed. The 4.2-kilowatt hour, 60-volt battery will last for a little of 60 miles and takes 3 hours for a full charge. You get three riding modes: Economy, Sport and a “Turbo” that gives in 20% more power only for 20 seconds. But will drastically decrease the battery range.

An upright riding position helps swiftly twist and turn around towns, and the suspension setup is set suitable to absorb street irregularities like bumps and potholes with ease. Then there is this high contrast negative display LCD instrumentation having a futuristic User Interface. You also get a Bluetooth speaker for calls and music. The front headlamp unit is one of the best-looking ones in the business that gets two projector LED lamps and two DRL’s flanked on either side. They call it the “Soul-Eye”.

VERDICT

With features like ABS, CDS, Anti-theft, geo-fencing, and daytime running lamp (DRL) among others, paying a paltry sum of under $2,000 is one heck of a deal. Of course, one cannot be sure of its reliability as well as the fit and finish, but Tork is showing many promises here.

The T6X is the production version of the company’s fifth prototype which in itself took a lot of investments in terms of time and funding. Seven years to be precise. It will be manufactured in the company’s Chakan plant which currently is said to be planned to a capacity of close to 5000 to 10000 units per year.

Tork Motorcycles have been on an endeavor to install 100 fast charging stations before deliveries commence. However, every customer will get a personal charging unit installed at their residence by the company.

This is the beginning of many new innovative and technologically packed products to be launched by the Pune company and time is the only mountain for them to cross to make a mark for themselves in the Indian market. If taking the amount of enthusiasm people have concurred about the T6X and Tork Motorcycles, in particular, there is no doubt in their success story, and we support their endeavor in creating green machines to the moon and back.
